One of the many shots that didn't make it into "Street Cred", a photo essay/article I worked on for the Spring, 2011 issue of STRONGBOX Magazine, available now for free download.

Great place, great beer, great people. Well, the music was just OK. Just kidding.

Little did we know we were in town the night of the kickoff Pep Rally for the high school football season. Was very awesome...shot a bit of video but was mostly taking other shots from the middle of a closed-off street. Holding those back for the fall issue of STRONGBOX...

Do you have to flaunt the fact that I'm being replaced?

A very, very complex lock inside the lid of a centuries-old strongbox.

I didn't find out what this was until I got home. Apparently it's a remnant of the original medieval Palace of Westminster, and housed a strongbox in which the crown jewels were stored.

Things slow at work this week? I've got just the thing: the new issue of STRONGBOX will get you through the day!

This 1739 bell was number five of six bells; it was replaced in 1999.

The church was built probably during the 12th Century, named after St Edward the Martyr who was murdered on 18th March 978 on the orders of Queen Alfthryth, his stepmother. After Corfe Castle was occupied by the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War, the Puritan forces used the church as a stables, and the font as a horse trough. A radical rebuild in 1859-60 saw bulging walls rebuilt and 18th Century galleries removed.

Death by Ketchup themed photo shoot with Lacey (MM# 1167503) in my kitchen. Idea was inspired by a photo challenge involving Heinz ketchup by the guys at Strongbox Magazine.

Lighting was with a mix of a 22" white beauty dish with grid, AB800 with 20 degree grid, and a Pentax 540fgz flash with homemade snoot depending on the photo.

Last year we thought it'd just be the two of us sitting there getting loaded (which would have been fine), but lots of people showed up and had a great time.

This year, if only a few people show up it'll be a huge disappointment and I'll likely start cutting myself.

R.S.V.P. to dan@strongboxmagazine.com if you can; I'd like to give them a ballpark head count.

An incredibly big, strong, heavy box, used to hold the parish records. The church is fourteenth century and I think this box is circa C16th.

I noticed there were thirteen hinges and I think seven locks, presumably a reference to the twelve apostles plus Jesus (or possibly the thirteen apostles, as Judas Iscariot was later 'replaced'). The locks perhaps refer to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

All a bit guessworky though...

I was told it was a solid lead box, which doesn't sound right as Lead would be too soft and the colour is wrong. My guess is it's an Oak box with a lead lining and cover which appears to be nailed on. Either way it's massive and probably couldn't be moved without a crane.

It's not exactly beautiful unless you're an engineer, but it is genuinely impressive, as boxes go. Unless you're a good locksmith you'd probably need dynamite to get it open.

Saints and their Dragons group: OK so techernickerly St Nicholas wasn't renowned for his dragon slaying feats, but this little chap is in his church, and he's only very little, so... :-)

Mall Lock and Key, Late 1800s

To help ensure mail's security, mailbags were locked and could be opened only by postal officials. This brass lock developed by the Eagle Lock Company was used specifically on Star Routes. Until the end of the 1800s, robbing a mail carrier warranted a jail term of five to ten years at hard labor for a first offense. A second offense could bring life at hard labor or a death sentence,

Mall Pouch, 1880s

Some Star Route contractors paid the ultimate price. Robbers caught up to a stagecoach and murdered the man carrying this mail pouch. They then slashed the pouch and stole the mail. Made from thick leather, these mail pouches were tough and watertight.

"Upon each of these wharf-boats the association's officer placed a strongbox, fastened with a peculiar lock which was used in no other service but one - the United States mail service. It was the letter-bag lock, a sacred governmental thing."

Mark Twain, Old Times in Mississippi, 1876

The Star Route Service and its contractors work to ensure safe transportation of the mail. In the past, moving the mail could be a dangerous business. Contractors usually traveled the road alone. Now, on-board computers, satellite tracking, and 24-hour dispatch assist contractors on their routes.
