Cadishead and Irlam Guardian 1966.
Parish records for 1654 re-discovered.
Some extremely fragile, but readable, parts of a 300-year-old parish register of St Helen's Church, Hollinfare, are among a collection of records which have been re-discovered there by the Vicar (Father J.A. Orrell). They were lying underneath more recent records in the church's strongbox.
Thr fragments, which, says the Vicar, look "as if they have come through fire and flood," cover the years from 1654 to 1723 and the other "finds" are the first complete registers dating from that year until 1783, and from then until the early part of the 19th century.
They bring to light all the registered births, marriages and deaths, not only in Hollins Green, but also in Irlam, Cadishead, and Partington, during the period. The probable reason is that St. Helen's was one of the four places of worship in the area - a church has been on the site since 1498 and was rebuilt in 1735 and 1880.
The entries were made in chronological and not classified sequence. In addition to the relevant names (some of which have been perpetuated) and dates, the records also reveal the status of the people mentioned.
The word "pauper" is written in capitals against many of the names and the word "base" is written after some births, to indicate that they were illegitimate.
One disaster recorded involved the drowning of seven people while they were attempting to cross the River Mersey by ferry. A typed copy of some of the earlier records was made by the Rev. Mr Firth, who was vicar for 23 years until his retirement in 1947.
Mrs M. Beeston, librarian in-charge of Irlam County Library, who is particularly interested in local history, visited the vicarage recently to read the records, and subsequently borrowed them to put on display in the Library.
Father Orrell told the "Guardian" that eventually he would probably pass them on to Mr J.R. Rimmer, Director of Warrington Museum, subject to permission of the Church.

Issue 4 of STRONGBOX is out... check it out some time & see if there's a number there for you.
Believe it or not, health care reform (or is it insurance reform?) here in the states is all about numbers big and small. What number are are you?
Hopefully, the truth about your number won't be impacted by anyone else's NUMBER...

What a frozen little hand,
let me warm it up1.
what use is looking?
In the dark we won't find it.
But by good fortune
it is a moonlit night,
and here the moon
we have it close to us.
Wait, Miss,
I'll tell you in two words
who I am, and what I do,
and how I live.
Is that ok2?
Who am I? I'm a poet.
What do I do? I write.
And how do I live? I get by3.
In my happy poverty
I squander like a great lord
rhymes and hymns of love.
For dreams and for fantasies4
and for castles in the air
I have a millionaire soul.
At times, from my strongbox,
two thieves, beautiful eyes,
steal all the jewels.
They came in with you just now
and the dreams I use
and all my sweet dreams
disappeared immediately!
But the theft doesn't bother me,
because, because hope
has taken their place!
Now that you know me
you speak, for pity's sake!
Speak. Who are you?
May it please you to tell!

It is not very well lit and you are not allowed to use a flash, but hopefully you can sort of see that the whole inner lid of this box is a big lock, kind of reminiscent of the serpent lock on the Chamber of Secrets in the second Harry Potter movie.
New issue is hot off the internet presses. Go get it!

Prior to The Reformation, churches had chests for the collection of "Peter's Pence", a tribute of a silver penny a year by parishioners of all Roman Catholic countries to support the Chair of St Peter in Rome. This was levied from the 8th Century until repealed by Elizabeth I. In 1559. She ordered churches to have "a strong chest with a hole in the upper part thereof, to be provided at the cost and charge of the parish, having three keys (one for the parson and one each for the two churchwardens)". This was to be placed where parishioners could conveniently place alms in it for their "poorer neighbours". These chests thus became known as the Poor Man's Chest. This is one of two chests in the church.
The church of St John the Baptist dates from the 12th Century, but construction is chiefly from the 14th and 15th Centuries; it is another church on which the Victorian architect Gilbert Scott worked. In the churchyard is the base of an ancient preaching cross, and inside, the WW1 memorial bears int. al. the name of Captain Noel Chavasse, one of only three servicemen to earn two Victoria Crosses.
