This Great Gray Owl spent most of its time in my presence turning its head from side to side and also pointing down to the nearby ground. Someone suggested that if they hunt in the day then they aren't getting enough food at night.

Almost all electric kettles work the same way: there's a steam tube running down from the water compartment to a bimetallic thermostat at the bottom that clicks the heating element off when the water boils. The idea was developed by English inventor John Taylor and commercialized by his company Strix, which has sold an estimated one billion thermostats of this kind!

This photo shows a closeup of one form of Strix thermostat and switching unit mounted in the base of the kettle. That's slightly different from kettles where the thermostat is fitted in the side of the handle (as shown in our other photo.

It's from our article about electric kettles.

They breed in North America from as far east as Quebec to the Pacific coast and Alaska, and from Finland and Estonia across northern Asia. They are permanent residents, although northerly populations may move south and southeast when food is scarce. In Europe they are found breeding in Norway and Sweden and more numerously through Finland and Russia.

This is another shot from the morning I discovered one of the owls perched directly above me as I waited in a lawn chair for a pileated woodpecker nest exchange. The owl was so unconcerned about my presence that it alternately gawked around, slept and preened. Here it is shaking its feathers a bit after preening for a while.
