Glorified, immeasurably glorified art Thou,
O my God, and my Beloved, and my Master,
and my Desire! Shatter not the hopes of this
lowly one to attain the shores of Thy glory, and deprive not this wretched creature of the immensities of Thy riches,
and cast not away this suppliant from the doors of Thy grace, and Thy bounty, and Thy gifts.
Have mercy, then, upon this poor
and desolate soul who hath sought no friend but Thee,
and no companion except Thee,
and no comforter save Thee,
and no beloved apart from Thee,
nor cherished any desire but Thyself.
—Bahá’u’lláh

The Strivers' Section is a historic neighborhood in the Dupont Circle area of Northwest Washington, D.C.
Strivers' Section was historically an enclave of upper-middle-class African Americans, often community leaders, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It takes its name from a turn-of-the-century writer who described the district as "the Striver's section, a community of Negro aristocracy." The name echoes that of a New York City historic neighborhood of black professionals: Strivers' Row in Harlem.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Striver's Section Historic District is roughly bounded by Swann Street NW on the south, Florida Avenue NW on the north and west, the 16th Street Historic District on the east, and 19th Street on the west.
The area was envisioned as part of the capital city by Pierre L'Enfant's 1791 plan; by 1852, plats were drawn up for 11 squares subdivided by streets. But the rural landscape remained largely uninhabited until the latter half of the century. Development began in the 1870s, encouraged by a north-south streetcar line along nearby 14th Street, and accelerated from about 1890 to 1910. Early residents including working-class people and professionals, African-Americans and whites. But the area became most strongly identified with the African-American elites who were attracted by public transit and the nearby Howard University.
Among its most notable residents was Frederick Douglass, runaway slave, abolitionist, orator, writer and civil servant. Douglass built the southern three buildings of a five-house, Second Empire-style row at 2000-2008 17th Street in 1875-76. Douglass' son inherited the houses and lived at 2002 from 1877 until his death in 1908.
Other notable residents have included:
Calvin Brent, the late-19th-century architect lived on V Street.
James C. Dacy, editor, realtor and D.C. Recorder of Deeds in 1904-10, also lived in the area.
James E. Storum, the educator and entrepreneur who founded the Capital Savings Bank, the first African-American-owned banking institution in the nation's capital, lived at 2004 17th Street.
Prominent figures who lived within a few blocks of the Historic District boundaries include:
Langston Hughes (1902-1967), Harlem Renaissance poet, novelist, essayist, and playwright, lived at 1749 S Street, NW.
Charles Hamilton Houston (1895-1950), dean of Howard University's law school, lived at 1744 S Street, NW.
Georgia Douglas Johnson (1880-1966), author and poet of the Harlem Renaissance, lived at 1461 S Street, NW.
Today, the Strivers' Section is still largely occupied by the Edwardian residences that have populated the area since its initial development, along with some apartment and condominium buildings and a few small businesses. The area includes some 430 buildings constructed between 1875 and 1946. It is the home of the national headquarters (1930 17th Street, NW) of Jack and Jill of America, which seeks to help children, especially African-American children, obtain cultural opportunities, develop leadership skills, and form social networks.

Tom Bass sculpture of the winged figure of Ethos representing the spirit of the community, Civic Square, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, 1962
Ethos was the first work of art commissioned by the National Capital Development Commission (NCDC) for a public place in Canberra and was co-sponsored by the Canberra Chamber of Commerce. The title uses an early Greek word meaning ‘the place of living’.
The winged female figure celebrates the civic pride of Canberra and the fabric of her robe is richly embossed with emblems and figures representing the community. Ethos stands in a dish bearing a relief map of the City and holds aloft a bursting sun representing culture and enlightenment.
The work stands before the ACT Legislative Assembly building and has, overtime, become a well-known Canberra landmark and a symbol of the city.
Ethos is listed on the ACT Heritage Objects Register. The Draft heritage nomination states:
“The NCDC intended that the work would emphasize that Canberra is the non-political centre, the locale of commerce and of private enterprise in its best sense. "The restless, virile, energetic movement of free enterprise" arising out of the planned city "and the two facets should become as one, striving forward progressively".(NCDC Meeting notes not dated, early 1960, NCDC file 66/1181).
The sculpture was thus conceived as representing the spirit of the community. Bass interpreted this in the figure which he intended "the love which Canberra people have for their city to be identified with her...I want them to be conscious of her first as an image from a distance...then comes the moment when they become personally involved with her... they feel her looking at them, reflecting their love for the place". (Daily Telegraph 7/12/61) She was "beauty arising from and through a plan - in this case, beauty represented by the National Capital arising from and through a planned city" (NCDC file note 4/5/60) and in form possessing true civic style and scale.
The form of the work is highly symbolic. The figure is robed in a fabric richly embossed with emblems and figures representing the Community. The shallow saucer on which the figure stands represents Canberra's nick-name "Frosty Hollow". The saucer is 6 sided because the plan for Civic square is itself hexagonal. The surface of the saucer bears a relief map of Canberra and the rolling countryside around it. At the feet of Ethos are indentations that represent the lake that was later to fill the space between the Civic Centre and the administrative part of the city. The bursting sun she holds aloft is symbolic of culture and enlightenment which the presence of Canberra's University, its research organisations and the Diplomatic Corps and so on give to the City.”
Tom Bass composed a poem inspired by Ethos for the 90th anniversary of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom which was celebrated with a week-long festival of peace in October 2005.
The poem is reproduced below:
ETHOS
I am Ethos
and though I do not speak
with words
I speak to you
in other ways.
I say to you that
I am the spirit
of this place
and this people.
I am the love
peace and beauty
of this place.
I am Ethos
and in me
there is no violence
no war, only peace
the resolution
of all the conflicts
that lead to war.
I am Ethos
I am peace and love
and I give you
these things
every day
and always.
(Tom Bass for Canberra's Festival of Peace, October 2005)

Trading forex has never been easy!
While it’s important to see value for your money and strive to make the best decisions in forex trading, we understand the devastation that comes with making losses owing to poor signal prediction.
When I was in college, I started forex trading after seeing a friend making immense payoffs, and I decided to try it.
Like any other hyped teenager, it’s pretty obvious that I wanted to make colossal profits overnight, and my expectations only added to my devastation after countless times of failing to hit the target.
Just before I quit, my friend (I’m still mad at her for not telling me this right from the start) said to me that ToolsTrades was going to help me solve my forex issues.
At first, I was quite skeptical but eventually decided to give it a shot.
From posting free signals for new traders to live announcements and real-time financial news updates, ToolsTrades amazed me by how they turned around my forex experience in a moment.
Their website and application are organized with a friendly interface, and most of their predictions actually turn out to be true.
Whether you’re a newbie or experienced trader, ToolsTrades is the best option for trading signals!

The STPC, together with the Midlands Tractor Pullers Club (MTPC) and the North West Tractor Pullers Club (NWTPC) are affiliated to the British Tractor Pullers Association (BTPA) who, along with a number of other European tractor pulling clubs, make up the European Tractor Pullers Committee (ETPC). The ETPC defines all safety and performance rules for all member countries, such as tractor classes and sledge rules. This enables tractors from all over Europe to pull together against each other in different countries. Although the STPC hold their own points championships, many Scottish Tractors compete in the BTPA championships alongside teams from the MTPC and the NWTPC. BTPA championship winners then have the option of travelling to the ETPC's European Championships, a two day event held in a different ETPC member country each year, for the chance to become a European Champion!!!
