The Somen (the thin noodles) was almost translucent; they provided solid 'support' for the Omi beef cheeks. The aged Amber beef was braised for a few hours resulting in stringy / soft texture and rather sweet flavors. The onions reduced any potential cloying taste ... the only protein coming from the meat dish in this dinner

it's kind of fuzzy --- but he sat there long enough for me to take a picture!
This is the male -- the female has been coming into the garden gathering stringy fibers from my yucca plant. ( she gets scared when she sees me move so I haven't been able to take her picture.... yet!
The male just sits and waits for her then they both fly off to their nest site.
black, white, shadow, light, fall plays stringy tricks on the drippy graffiti left on the side of this building.
This is what a mermaids hair would look like.
Not that i've ever seen one.. but dont you think it would fit?!
2010 June 1 - Two-year-old marshmallow Peeps found in the fridge. Originally meant for melting in coffee, I tried to explode them in the microwave this morning in a display of pseudo-science:
12 seconds - One fell over. That should be an automatic K.O. but I opened door to upright it, continued microwaving.
30 seconds - Both Peeps exhibit obvious expansion.
1 minute - Peeps have enlarged to about four times their original size. Removed from microwave.
Aftermath - Within seconds, both Peep bubbles deflated into a gloppy mess. Within minutes, they appeared to merge and harden like cooling lava on the plate. I scraped it off with a spoon and left the plate to soak.
---
This photo is from the third microwave session sans wooden toothpicks. Only did it to get a photo of the resulting Peep bubbles. Other minor details:
2nd try: one peep keeled over at about 20 seconds.
3rd try: both peeps fell over within 30 seconds.
No explosions.
Conclusion: Old Peeps lose their sense of balance with age but the strength of their cellular bonds increases, i.e. it appears they may become "stringier." They do not seem to pop as newborn Peeps do.
I did not microwave them long enough to observe maximum obtainable Peep size expansion. Hmm. I should do that.

I thought Maddy's hair looked a little stringy in this photo, so I softened the photo with Photoshop while keeping her face fairly sharp. The original photo can be found in my Photo-A-Day set.
i fell asleep for a while, and the next thing you know, i am at this place with all this water and sand and this slimy, stringy stuff mama says is seaweed, what the heck is up with that?????"

Double Top Mountain Overlook Area
There are so many beautiful wildflowers and butterflies around this particular overlook that you forget to look at Double Top Mountain across the valley!!
Here we have Phlox, Oswego Tea (Bergamot Beebalm), Green Headed Coneflowers, something funny looking I can't identify, and lots of other little dainty wildflowers. There is also quite a stand of "Dodder" (orange stringy stuff with white flowers) is also present . this is an invasive parasite and has a tendency to "take over" if you aren't careful, but it adds a LOT of color to the roadside, and Monarchs who will come through in September will really love it!

The Stanford team at Çatalhüyük. We worked on uncovering one of the oldest cities known in the world, dating back over nine thousand years. The site is in central Turkey, basically in the middle of nowhere. Sorry to be clichéd, but it was the experience of a lifetime.

This photo uses texture by the smooth snow, soft leaves, and stringy cobwebs. My favorite part of this photo is the spiderwebs. What I think I did well was how nicely focused the top leaves were. What i changed in photoshop and camera raw were the snow's whiteness was brightened, along with the greens in the photo who were darkened a bit. What I would change would be maybe a bit more of a focal point even though I think the focal point is the top leaves other may think different.
It's the mystery grass again. It's been trimmed since this shot. Hoping it will seed because I think it's pretty.
We get a lot of green beans from our garden in the late summer - the parboil, then crisp in the skillet method and toss in sauce worked great for the ones that were a little more stringy when we didn't pick often enough. But it also works fine for frozen green beans if you're careful not to overcook them. It may seem like extra steps, but the flavor and texture are SO worth it. When I didn't have bacon and had extra mushrooms recently I tried that swap, it worked great. If you're making it vegan, maybe toasted sesame oil instead of bacon fat? A little liquid smoke in the sauce might be handy if you want to keep the original flavor combo, though.

Foundation stone 22 May 1848 by the Colonial Secretary, A M Mundy, consecrated 24 Mar 1849 by Bishop Short, chancel & vestry added 1865, porch added 1912 with bell presented by T R Scarfe of nearby “Eden Park”. Foundation stone of schoolroom in Bridge St 14 Mar 1891 by A Hay.
“In 1848 there was no church nearer to Kensington than St. John's, Halifax street. Bishop Short lived at Kensington and 46 residents of the district signed a petition seeking provision of a church to serve the needs of people living between the foothills and the area reserved for the city. At meeting in the Bishop's home in April, 1848, a subscription list was opened and the appeal met with such a ready response that the foundation stone of the new church was laid only six weeks later.” [Advertiser 24 Mar 1949]
“St. Matthew's Church. . . The acre was granted by the South Australian Company from part section sold to the Brunskill's. . . much expense was saved in church building by gifts of stone and free, quarrying, sand and free carting. The brothers, William, Charles, and Henry Dean, were among the leading workers. The sand, was obtained, from the creek on the Reed's property at Heatbpool.” [Register 17 Nov 1923]
“On Monday last, the foundation-stone of the Episcopal Church (St. Matthew's), at Kensington, was laid by the Hon. A. M. Mundy. Notwithstanding the unfavourable state of the weather, about one hundred persons were present, including several clergymen and ladies.” [Register 24 May 1848]
“St. Matthew’s Church, Kensington. — A beautiful font of white Sydney marble, from a design of Mr Edmund Blackett, architect to the cathedral of St. Andrew's, at Sydney. . . has been presented to the above church, by Miss Seton, as a parting gift, she being on the eve of her departure to England.” [South Australian 23 Feb 1849]
“The weather was not altogether propitious, as a cold wind was blowing, and a heavy shower came on during the ceremony. However, notwithstanding this drawback, a numerous congregation assembled in the neat simple little church, which, with its background of hills, forms a most pleasing and picturesque object. . . The burial-ground was then consecrated by the Bishop.” [South Australian 27 Mar 1849]
“St. Matthew's Church, Kensington.—The Fancy Bazaar in aid of a fund for the purchase of an harmonium, was opened yesterday.” [Adelaide Times 15 May 1856]
“the prettily-situated suburban Church of St. Matthew's, Kensington, was reopened, after having undergone considerable alterations, consisting of the addition of a chancel to the previous place of worship, and a complete renovation internally and externally.” [Weekly Chronicle 9 Sep 1865]
“The picturesque old church, of St. Matthew, at Kensington, which was the third church built in South Australia by settlers, and which is a prominent landmark in the eastern suburbs, is now undergoing a rapid change in appearance, under the supervision of Messrs. F. W. Danker & Son, architects. The renovations are being paid for by the members of the parish. The alterations to be made will not cause the building to lose its antique appearance. A new organ chamber is being erected, while a porch to be built on to the front will greatly improve that portion of the building. The outside of the church will be roughly plastered and finished with a whitewash. New floors are to be put down inside, and the choir stalls and congregation pews will be altered. An oak dado 5 ft. high, will run around the interior wall much enhancing its ancient aspect, and a new rood beam of oak will be erected across the chancel arch. The Gothic windows will be of a lattice design, carried out in leaded lights. . . The church was erected by the early parishioners, who carted the granite and other stone from the hills near by. The pews were constructed of stringy bark and stained to represent oak, and were not fastened to the floor. Each member of the church was expected to manufacture his own seat, and when the service was over, he placed this piece of the church furniture under his arm and carried it to his home.” [Daily Herald 31 Jul 1912]
“The restoration of St. Matthew's Church, Kensington, nearly 64 years after its dedication in May 1849, was recently undertaken at a cost of about £700 or £800. Efforts to raise this money were begun two years ago.” [Advertiser 18 Nov 1912]
“In 1919 St. Matthew's was renovated but as far as possible the original character of the building was preserved. Even the wood originally used for the seating was put back. . . A roll of honour bearing, the names so often read out during service throughout the war is placed on the eastern wall of the church.” [Register 16 Apr 1923]
“The Bishop of Adelaide (Dr. Thomas) will dedicate tomorrow morning at St. Matthew's, Kensington, the new carved blackwood altar erected as a memorial to Canon Dempster, for 30 years rector.” [Advertiser 29 Apr 1933]
“At St. Matthew's Church, Kensington, special services have been arranged to celebrate the seventy-fifth year of the church's consecration.” [Register 20 Sep 1924]
