Loved the still water in this shot, these grebes are neat, they have such neat feathers compared to other waterfowl. Longer and stringier. Beak is very unique too.

Small, quiet virtues are rare enough in American movies these days, but to find them in a bittersweet autobiographical script by none other than Joe Eszterhas — about growing up as a green Hungarian immigrant in early 60s Cleveland — is a genuine shock. Yet I have to admit that earlier Eszterhas-scripted movies such as Basic Instinct and Showgirls, for all their grotesqueries, have gradually become guilty pleasures of mine; there’s something touching about his honest primitivism. When the grotesquerie’s removed — as it has been under the thoughtful direction of Guy Ferland (whose only previous feature is The Babysitter) — what emerges is solid and affecting. Brad Renfro plays a shy, 17-year-old compulsive liar who goes to work for a master, a payola-happy rock DJ (Kevin Bacon in his prime) named Billy Magic. What the kid winds up discovering — like the hard discoveries in Elia Kazan’s America, America — is more nuanced than you might think. The period detail is mostly perfect and the casting of certain minor parts (such as Luke Wilson as an egg-market manager) sublime, and the purity of feeling recalls exercises in nostalgia on the order of The Last Picture Show. Everyone here gives a good performance; as the hero’s father Maximilian Schell plays beautifully against the expected stereotype, and Calista Flockhart is equally impressive as the coworker the boy has a crush on. I don’t know if I could call this movie profound, but most of it feels true, and I’ve loved every minute of it all three times I’ve seen it. - Chicago Reader, 10/24/1997

Cleveland, 1960. “I haven’t been Billy Magic since Fort Worth,” says the lanky, chain-smoking disc jockey. He has the grin of a man who is getting away with something. He is. “Telling Lies in America,” based on the memories of America’s top-paid screenwriter, Joe Eszterhas, is about the kid who helps Billy get away with it, and does a lot of growing up in the process. He gets a break and loses his innocence at the same time.
Karchy Jonas (Brad Renfro) is a student at a Catholic high school attended mostly by rich kids, who call him “white trash.” His father (Maximilian Schell) is a Hungarian immigrant, who was a professor in the old country but is a janitor in this one. Karchy works for an egg dealer in the local produce market, and has a crush on a girl who tells him she’ll date him, but only if he’s picked for Billy Magic’s “High School Hall of Fame.” Hall of Famers are supposed to be nominated by their classmates, but Karchy forges the signatures, sends them in, and wins. What he doesn’t know is that Billy Magic is looking for a cheater. “You lie good, kid,” he tells him, but even after he gives Karchy a $100-a-week job, the kid won’t admit he was lying. That’s good. It’s the time of the payola scandals, and Billy needs an underage bag man who can’t be forced to testify.
Eszterhas, who has made a fortune with screenplays like “Basic Instinct” and “Showgirls,” has had this story in the works for 15 years. Himself a Hungarian immigrant who came to Cleveland as a child, he remembers what success looked like from the outside. To Karchy, Billy Magic is a star. And the kid soon centers his life on the radio station, letting his grades slip because school is no longer where he expects to find his future.
Kevin Bacon’s work as the disk jockey is one of his best performances. He never pushes it too far: His style is laid-back cool, rather than frantic. His lazy announcer’s drawl suggests a cynicism developed during a career on too many stations under too many names. When the kid tells him he’s got it made, Billy explains about his ex-wives, his child support payments, and the fact that his red Cadillac convertible is leased. He’s one jump ahead of his next market.
Brad Renfro is assured and involving as Karchy. Amazingly, he’s playing over his age; Renfro (so good as the young boy in “The Client” in 1994) was 14 or 15 when he played this 17 years old; it is a nuanced performance, showing a character who has been so wounded by life (his mother is dead, his father embittered) that, yes, he’ll lie to get what he wants. And in an unexpected twist at the end of the film, lying pays off. (At one point, he advises the girl to read Huckleberry Finn–a nod to his previous role, as Huck in “Huck and Jim.”) The movie’s weak point is Karchy’s father, as played by Schell. Mr. Jonas is a weary assortment of cliches about immigrant dads: He always wears his hat in the house, has stringy hair and needs a shave. We are told this man was a professor and famous doctor in Hungary. It is more likely that he would dress according to Old World standards, however old his clothes. He wouldn’t seem so self-demeaning and clueless, forever moping around at home waiting for his son to walk in. A smarter character would have led to a better relationship.
But that’s a small point. I liked this movie a lot–not just for Bacon and Renfro, but also for the work of the wonderfully-named Calista Flockhart, as the girl who dates Karchy even after he unwisely tries to give her Spanish fly. What I’ll remember best about the film is Billy Magic, who does what he does, knows what he knows, and is intimately familiar with the underside of fame.

this is one of a ton of pics i took in New Hampshire - my grandparents built a house there, which they lived in along with my mom and her sister and brother, when they (my mom etc.) were all kids. there's still no electricity there or any toilet - we have to use a somewhat odorous outhouse - but we visit every summer and i love it there. there was a lot of this weird moss hanging off the trees

I was invited to a dinner of regional specialties - one of which is "Aligot" pureed potatoes made with fresh-from-the-cow cheese. When they are made properly they are stringy like mozzerela. Talk about cheesy - and so good!

Here is barbie on a white wall/ no context. I was in the living room with just a lamp so I used the tungsten setting and just put to iso all the way up. I did try a bunch of other things with barbie but with both my 3year old nieces being up it became a challenge trying to keep toys in one place lol. anyway, I specifically was thinking about being ale to show every stringy hair and all the painted on detail in her make up. I did have to move the lamp to the side of her because initially it was behind me and I was creating a big shadow.
I was on a magazine shoot for Total Carp magazine and the lake we were fishing has been partially drained, which meant loads of this stringy weed was spread over the surface of the lake.
Vignette added in LR2 and WB and contrast levels tweaked to make this a really abstract shot.

The Yucantan Peninsula in Mexico has not one single lake or river, which is so hard to imagine. However, they do have over 10,000 sinkholes, referred to as centoes in Spanish. Many of them are well developed like you see in these photos with steps and diving platforms. My favorite part of them is the roots of the trees that grow down into the cenotes--that's what the long stringy things are. The top of the centoes are essentially at ground level.
See those stringy things on her back? There falling all over the place from the trees. I sweep them up and the next day they're all over the place again!! It happens every spring.

A long heavy bill, stringy, shaggy plumes, long neck would say that it is a Reddish Egret, White Morph, second year. But those green legs - don't fit the picture.

I'm totally making a lamp that looks like this jelly. I need some red silk cord.
Notes for next time shooting something similar: Place onion root and onion stringy end in same plane of focus, with some areas of one onion blurring fore, and the other blurring aft.
I took this while on a bus tour of North Chicago. We were let off at the Lincoln Park Zoo (which is free btw). In the north part of the zoo was a building called "The Conservatory". There were a ton of exotic flowers and plants in there. This was one of them. I have no idea what the plant is, but it was really thick and I thought I could get a cool depth of field shot out of it.

The pumpkin is now pretty salty and the water has taken on the color of the juices that have sweat off the pumpkin.
The shallot has stayed largely intact which is more attractive than a bunch of stringy rings. Happily, a good bit of it was still intact after the simmer in the brine.
Haven't grown this before but the squash is supposed to become stringy (like spaghetti) when cooked properly. Its a lovely plant in any event.
Here are the third and fourth courses of the spring menu. On the left... a dish I can't remember the name of. On the right, "Young garlic soup with thyme and sautéed frog legs on the side." Actually, I quite liked the frog legs... they were meaty and not gamey or stringy at all, which is what I'd come to expect of frog legs.
