An adorable Cooper's hawk chick who fell out of a eucalyptus tree from the vacant lot next door and ended up in my yard a few years ago.
Despite its young age, the meat was not nearly as tender as you'd think. It was kind of stringy.
Just kidding! It wasn't stringy at all! Delicious from beak to talon!
Oh, settle down. We got 'im to a raptor rescue place where he was raised and eventually released, probably, and today he's likely feasting on delicious, tender squirrels.
Just kidding! Squirrels aren't tender at all and are known as the stringiest of all rodents! Just ask any Cooper's hawk!
Finished up shoveling and blowing the driveway and noticed a cool looking, wind-blown snow peak. Photographed and adjusted in PhotoShop.
It is a large tree, reaching 130 feet (25–40 m) (rarely to 44 m) tall and a trunk diameter of 10 feet (2–3 m, rarely to 5 m). The bark is gray-brown to red-brown, shallowly vertically fissured, with a stringy texture. The leaves are borne on deciduous branchlets that are spirally arranged on the stem but twisted at the base to lie in two horizontal ranks, 1-2 cm long and 1-2 mm broad; unlike most other species in the family Cupressaceae, it is deciduous, losing the leaves in the winter months, hence the name 'bald'. It is monoecious. Male and female strobili mature in about 12 months; they are produced from buds formed in the late fall, with pollination in early winter. The seed cones are green maturing gray-brown, globular, 2-3.5 cm in diameter. They have from 20–30 spirally arranged four-sided scales, each bearing one or two (rarely three) trianglular seeds. The number of seeds per cone ranges from 20–40. The cones disintegrate when mature to release the large seeds. The seeds are 5-10 mm long, the largest of any species in the cypress family, and are produced every year but with heavy crops every three to five years. The seedlings have 3–9 (most often 6) cotyledons.[2]
The main trunks are surrounded by cypress knees .
The tallest known individual specimen, near Williamsburg, Virginia, is 145 feet (44 m) tall, and the stoutest known, in the Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has 17 feet (521 cm) diameter.
I cut open the Red Oak gall I found awhile back and this is one of the photos I took. I dissected the wasp out of the interior, but as I was trying to get a photo of it, I accidentally knocked it off onto the floor. The wasp was so small I couldn't see it on the carpet. =o(
Unfortunately, not quite in bloom here. A native low winter annual, 2-12 inches tall, usually branching at the base, grows usually on exposed limestone. The leaves are alternate, linear, round in cross-section, to 1.5 inch long, and sessile. The flowers are sessile, pink to white, usually with 4 spreading petals, 0.12-0.25 inch long, anthers often red. The flowers are crowded on 3-7 short, divergent branches, each 1-3 inches long, seen April-May.
Found on limestone ledges (also on chert and sandstone), roadsides, and openings, from Kentucky and Georgia west to Oklahoma and Texas. A characteristic plant of the cedar glades of middle Tennessee though also occurs on cliffs and is currently spreading along Tennessee roads in limestone gravel. This plant is fond of full sun and well drained soil.
The similar Stringy Stonecrop – Sedum sarmentosum – is a perennial with creeping stems that form mats, has thick leaves that are flattened, usually in whorls of 3, yellow flowers that are mostly with 5 petals, about 0.5 inch wide, introduced from China, now escaped from cultivation in much of the eastern U.S. (it blooms May-July).
Also called Widow’s Cross due to the shape of the 4-petaled flower. Other names include Pink Stonecrop and Widowscross. Sedum comes from the latin word ‘sedeo’ which means “to sit”, most likely in reference to the recumbent nature of most sedums. The latin meaning of ‘pulchellum’ is pretty or beautiful.

Dried baby's breath on a deer antler

The antler was obtained from a hunted deer and given to me by a former student. She had used it in a biological study, taking core samples from different locations. Once she finished with it, she gave it to me.
Antler proved difficult to work with because of the shape and size. There is no easy way to attach anything but vines or small, stringy plants, which are difficult to identify by impression alone.
Not entirely sure these three photos go together, but for some reason I like them like this. Our Halloween jack-o-lantern, from three slightly different perspectives.
Deboxing the 2013 Formal Merida 11'' doll by the Disney Store. She has been removed from the backing, and placed face up on a counter. The packaging restraints have been removed, as well as her bow and arrow. Her bow and arrow are placed next to her. Her hair has been evened out in the back. It is in two distinct layers. The upper layer is in tight, stringy curls with hair product making is stiff. The lower layer is mainly straight, with soft curls at the ends, and has no hair product. The lower layer is about an inch longer than the upper layer, mainly because it is much less curly.

First Look
Fully posable 11'' doll of Princess Merida in her Formal dress, made of glittering light blue-green satin, with gold trim. There is a printed golden Celtic design at the hem of her skirt. She also wears a gold satin sash around her waist, with a printed Celtic pattern. She wears light teal flat shoes. Comes with bow and arrow, and quiver. Her exact height is 11 1/4'', although the Disney Store lists her as 12'' high.
She is a companion doll to the 2012 Classic Merida 11'' Doll, who comes with the same accessories, but with a dark teal Adventure dress. There was also a slightly different 11'' Merida in formal dress, that came with the Brave Merida and Angus Doll Set (currently sold out). I photograph her boxed, during the deboxing, and fully deboxed. She is also shown with comparable dolls.

Spectacular red-orange flowers bloom all over the plant and they are full of nectar and bees from November to February. Corymbya ficifolia originates in Western Australia and can be succesfully grown now in wetter Australian east coast locations due to grafting onto East Coast Bloodwood stock.It is an ideal specimen or shade tree as it usually forms a round crown with a single trunk. Has stringy reddish brown bark and long glossy green leaves. Will tolerate drought and wind but does prefers moist soils. Must be protected from frost when young. 6-8m x 5m
This is a beautiful cold hardy palm that is very easy to grow. It is also drought tolerant, inexpensive and readily available at nurseries and discount stores. Like many palms, the pindo produces an elaborate flowering structure called an inflorescence - the orange fruit forms on these structures after the female flowers have been pollinated. In the deep south, a jelly is made from these fruits. They have a terrific taste that starts out like apple and tranforms to tart tropical flavors as it tantalizes the tongue. Too bad the fruit has a large seed and stringy fibrous flesh or I would eat them by the handful!
This palm produces a large quantity of fruit, which can be a nuisance, as ripening fruit attracts wasps and other insects. Remove flower stalks to avoid messy cleanups.

Although Halloween is over, the pumpkins that served as Jack-O-Lanterns are still very much alive. They have become a cauldron filled with gooey, oozing, fuzzy, stringy, tangled web of enzymes spores, and mold. All of which are breaking down and consuming the "delectable" flesh of the pumpkin.....every last drop.
People are freaking out over how cool this doll is and with good reason! Her face-up is gorgeous, she has musical note scars molded into her plastic that cascade down the left side of her face onto her shoulder and arm which lead into that black and red tattoo, and her stock (not pictured) is extremely cool. Of course I get antsy leaving these dolls in their stock clothes so within a few hours of getting her I was already changing her! I thought SS Ghoulia's retro 50's outfit was a perfect match to Operetta's big victory rolls. Really the only thing not impressive about her is that all her hair behind the rolls is flat, stringy, and unruly. Otherwise she's pretty much perfect, and easily one of the best Monster High dolls yet!
I had dinner planned the day Laura arrived to Puerto Vallarta, but the thing I wanted to share with her most was a mango. Depending on what kind of mango is in season, you can usually score 2lbs. for $1. There is nothing better than bitting into the juicy, sweet, stringy flesh of a mango. This is a photo of a spin art. If you have never done spin art, it’s fun. It starts with a motorized wheel, comparable to an electric potter’s wheel or a high speed record turntable. A piece of paper gets affixed. You then add paint, then spin it. You can add globs of paint then turn on the motor, or else you can spin up the paper, then apply thin streams of paint to the spinning paper. The effects can be striking or silly, rarely great art, but always fun and a good way to introduce art and creativity to kids. There are technicalities of the media that can make the results better or worse, especially the paints. If you have ever tried this using the kits sold in toy or craft stores, the results often look stringy and runny, a consequence of using thin watery paints. But, get the right type of viscous paint and a good coated paper, and the results get much better. I made this specimen years ago, using thick paints in citrus color, all poured onto the paper from squeeze bottles before turning on the motor. After spinning for a few seconds, here are the results. While this is not really a photo, just a photo of the art, it has been useful for me as a texture or visual resource to be combined with other photos in creating new art. As an example, it has been combined with the accompanying closeup photo of a hibiscus blossom (taken in a garden in San Diego) to create a new vision of the flower bursting into color. Two similar but subtle variations of this mashup are presented.

Sometimes, a photo by itself is boring or mundane, but it has an alternative life or message when combined with other imagery for an artistic reinterpretation. Sometimes a photo is not much of an image by itself, but it is a useful graphical element or resource that can be used to add textures, colors, or other enhancements to other photos or art. Sometimes a photo inspires new meanings or interpretations, and artistic re-renderings of the photo can elevate it beyond its face value subject. In this series of images, photos have been combined, hashed, rehashed, and mashed up to make new art and images.

I was working in a record store when Savage Garden broke through with their first hit, "I Want You." I can remember people coming in asking for "that song about cherry cola." "Cherry cola? What?" Once we knew what it was, once we had their single and then their album in stock, I was an instant fan. That first song was like everything pop music is and should be, but it still managed to sound like something new that I'd never heard before.
Lately I can't stop listening to their music again. They only released 2 albums before going their separate ways - but wow, both albums are full of amazing songs.
This is how Darren Hayes looked when I first saw him (alongside his blond SG partner Daniel Jones). Baggy spaceage clothes, guyliner, and that stringy, kooky-but-cool hairstyle. I think what I admired most about him from the very beginning was that he was never afraid to look feminine. He was confident and just doing his own thing, being his own person, rocking his own tune.
Didymosphenia geminata from New Zealand. It is also found in Vermont. In recent years it has become a serious problem, growing in huge quantities in some rivers. It produces great stringy masses of the diatoms. It has two nicknames: Didymo and the descriptive rock snot.

Simple roll ups which becomes very tender as the cream and lemon both tenderise the potentially dry and stringy chicken breast , while the slice of pancetta bastes the lean meat from the inside. We tied these up with string so as to attach a rosemary sprig on the outside.

Every morning I get up, take the broom and sweep these long stringy webs from between all the plants. Now I know who is making them. I should be a little more aware when I poke my hands into the plants to get those pesky hard to see webs.
Emu Bottom Homestead is a historic homestead near Sunbury, in Victoria. Built around 1836, Emu Bottom is the oldest existing farmhouse constructed by settlers in Victoria. It was so named because it was on low lying ground which was the haunt of numerous emus. The main homestead and some of its outlying buildings were constructed from local stone, dry coursed with creek mud and stringy bark.
Emu Bottom is also a rare example of early Australian colonial architecture, with its twelve paned deeply recessed windows recalling the old world, whilst the homestead was also intelligently adapted to the new harsh Australian environment with its wide verandas and easterly aspect.
The building of Emu Bottom homestead commenced circa 1836. George Evans (1785 – 1876), who had arrived on the Schooner Enterprise from Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania) in 1835, settled near modern day Sunbury. Emu Bottom, later called Emu Vale, was occupied by George Evans, by squatting license, as one of many large squatting runs on Crown Land. In 1843, George Evans, then aged fifty-eight, married eighteen year old Anne Holden. Six children were born from the union and grew up at the homestead. After 1851, many squatting runs, including Emu Bottom, became available for outright purchase. To George Evans' dismay, “his” run was purchased by the immensely wealthy pastoralist W. J. T. Clarke. The homestead block of 640 acres stayed with George Evans, but this was hardly viable. In about 1860, George Evans leased the property and moved to operate the Royal Oak Hotel in Queen Street in central Melbourne. He died in Melbourne in 1876, but his family eventually returned to Emu Bottom. In 1916 the last of Evans’ son’s died and the property passed through several owners, being renamed “Holly Green.”
In 1968, the property was purchased by the current owners, and Holly Green was completely restored and was given back its original - if perhaps less poetic - name. During restoration, several discoveries were made including the original kitchen fireplace and oven, as well as some artifacts. Today the homestead and surrounds are managed as a reception centre.

Similar in growth and cultural needs to Leucadendron, but has great stringy red flowers. I would plant it for the color of the new growth alone!
The Wachirathan Waterfall (pronounced "wah-chee-rah-TAHN"; also spelled Vachirathan) was the second major waterfall on the way up to the summit of Doi Inthanon. Of all the waterfalls we saw in Doi Inthanon National Park, we thought this one had the most power and spray, and it was probably the most impressive of the lot on the mountain's slopes.
Even though our guide told us that this was 80m in cumulative height, I was thinking it was more like 40m or so. The falls was also wide, but segmented during our visit as the far right section of the falls were stringier than the left. I reckon during the wet season, this would be both wide and raging.
ACSB and PanCo played for the Parade then performed a concert. Have never seen so many 'pirates' in my life! Crazy! Lots of Pirate Captains and Pirate Queens...but also some pretty scurvy lads and wenches. I was particulary impressed with one chap's greasy, stringy, dread-locky-with-junk hairdo...until I realized it was his own nasty hair. PS - Lucie and I drive the van for parades.
