THE COVER:
“Every boy has a spell of yearning to resemble Hercules or Tarzan or some other bulging being. To accomplish this he yearns for fairly expensive gadgets, scorning his father’s theory that a superb body can be built with a snow shovel or a spade. So there is Johnny in calisthenical agony; and how long will it take him to get fed up with the deal and switch to rocket building or something?
“Artist Kur Ard purchased those awesome exercisers, but you needn’t feel sorry for his model – the expanded springs were fastened to the studio walls and all the lad had to exercise was his face. Later Ard found the gadgets useful for various purposes, but not for exercising. He learned to pop those springs into the hands of visitors who talk about the big fish they caught.” [Editor’s Note]
Myth vs Reality regarding strength training for children:
Contrary to myth, weight training does not stunt a child’s growth when done properly. The American Academy of Pediatrics even supports strength training for kids as young as 7 or 8, as long as it’s well-designed and supervised. Supervised, age-appropriate strength training using light weights, resistance bands, or bodyweight is not only safe but can improve bone density and muscle strength, reduce the risk of sports injuries, and boost confidence and body awareness. Avoid programs that mimic adult bodybuilding routines, heavy lifting without proper technique or guidance, and equipment not sized for children.
The myth likely stems from concerns about damage to growth plates, the soft areas at the ends of long bones in children and teens. The reality is that injuries to growth plates are rare and usually result from poor form, excessive weight, or lack of supervision—not from strength training itself.

Kurt Ard, born in 1925 in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a celebrated illustrator known for his warm, humorous depictions of everyday life, rendered with meticulous realism. Inspired by Norman Rockwell, Ard began his career during World War II, selling his first magazine illustration at just 17. Despite the hardships of wartime Europe, he rose to international prominence in the 1950s–70s, creating over a thousand illustrations for major publications.
Ard’s work graced the covers of “The Saturday Evening Post,” “McCall’s,” “Reader’s Digest,” and numerous European magazines like “HÖRZU” and “Familie Journal.” Ard often used his family as models, capturing intimate, relatable moments with charm and wit. Though based in Copenhagen, he navigated the logistical challenges of working with U.S. editors from afar. In later years, he relocated to Spain, continuing to paint evocative landscapes and figurative scenes with the same luminous detail that defined his magazine work.
