In the Marias, just south of the Carnavalet Museum, Rue Pavee was (allegedly) the first paved street in Paris.
A short photo tour to Paris - explored the city of love in 16 hours and photographed the streetlife of Paris.
On my recent visit to Paris I was reading the wonderful novel "Pure" by Andrew Miller. Set in pre-revolutionary Paris (1785) it is about a young engineer (Jean-Baptiste Barratte) who is tasked with clearing the Cemetery of Les Innocents - then the main cemetery in Paris; full to overflowing and bringing stench and disease to the surrounding streets. The bodies and bones were dug out (to depth of 20m) by day and transported through the city under cover of night to an old quarry in Montparnasse - now The Catacombs ( www.catacombes-de-paris.fr/english.htm ).
Sounds macabre? It is, but also one of the most haunting novels I've read in a long time.
So on my first visit to the Cite de l'Architecture et Patrimoine (in the Palais dde Chaillot) I was delighted to find this map of old Paris with a plan of the cemetery as it was before it was cleared and the church demolished by Jean-Baptiste. The electric socket tells you that this bit of the map was almost on the floor!
The Caillbotte brothers Gustave (1848-1894, painter) and Martial (1853-1910, photographer) lived in the new districts of Paris designed by Baron Haussmann and witnessed the urban transformation which the city underwent during the latter part of the C19. They were fascinated by symbols of modernity such as bridges and railways, and the hustle and bustle of the Parisian boulevards was one of their favourite themes.

Looking across the Seine from Pont Louis-Philippe towards the north west corner of the Ile Saint-Louis and Notre Dame on the Ile de la Cite.
A strange juxtaposition. In fact the "Chinese" building is a C20 conversion of a C19 "belle époque" house.
