Whilst the streamlining applied by Gresley was done with much care and wind tunnel testing, the LMS attempt was pure publicity. Stanier wasn't even a fan! 6229 'Duchess of Hamilton', one of the second build of 'Princess Coronation' class locomotives that had been built for a new Coronation train, was rolled out of Crewe in 1938.

6229 'Duchess of Hamilton' was re streamlined by Tyseley works in 2009. It is compared here to a Chrysler Airflow car, build by Chrysler between 1934 and 1937. I think this one is a 1935 model, as it doesn't have the startling original waterfall grille of the 1934 card. Designed for Chrysler by their Carl Breer, who was fascinated by how forms are affected by their environment. Unfortunately, the general American public weren't quite so fascinated, nor were they interested in the all steel body or better handling it offered.
In contrast the Princess Coronation class were a huge success for the LMS and its designer William Stanier, apart from the streamlining which had gone from 6220 by December 1947.
