Fort near Edam NL

The Fort near Edam was completed in 1913. But this was preceded by a period of many decades in which the Defense Line of Amsterdam was placed on the drawing tables and the Dutch parliament had to give its approval as a result of increasing international tensions. At the end of the 19th century, France and Germany argued more and more, among other things about the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which after the division of Belgium in 1830 was still under Dutch control.

The Fort at Edam was only used for military strategic reasons during the two world wars. And only in the First World War as intended by the designers of the Defense Line of Amsterdam: with 255 officers and men and equipped with five guns and nine machine guns.

Water

Water had always played an important defensive role in Dutch military strategy. The Dutch Waterline proved to be no problem for the French invasion force in 1795: it was January and the ice was more than thick enough to be able to push through to Utrecht and Holland quickly.

Stelling van Amsterdam

Defensive zones had also been built around Amsterdam much earlier. But only to the south, because that is where the enemy always came from. Mass. In 1799, to everyone's surprise, and certainly from the French occupation force, the English and Russian Allies landed at Callantsoog to liberate the Netherlands. A northern line of defence had to be set up around Amsterdam in a hurry.

Technical

At the same time, great improvements were made to the art of gunmaking in the 19th century. The range of the modern guns increased noticeably, while the old fortifications proved unable to withstand, for example, the new high-explosive grenade. That required increasingly heavy fortifications - on the weak Dutch soil - and lines of defence at a greater distance from the objects to be defended such as the city of Amsterdam.
