An HDR image of old storefronts on Capitol Street in Jackson, Mississippi. I hope they will get their downtown area renovated - it has such wonderful history that it is a shame for the surrounding buildings to be do rundown. This image just begged to have a bit of grunge added. See my blog at wp.me/p1aWsn-uS to see how this was done. For frame effects see wp.me/p1aWsn-CR.
Perforated window graphics allow people to see out and for some light to pass through but still show nice from the outside.

Morscher’s Pork Store in Ridgewood, Queens has sadly announced that it will be permanently closing on February 3, 2024. This wonderful family-owned shop is known for its sausages and meat specialties originating from Gottschee, a German enclave in Slovenia and was founded in 1957 by Joseph Morscher. When we took this exterior photo in 2008 we met and spoke with Herbert Morscher, who continued the tradition with his family’s recipes but brought it into the 21st century with state of the art high-tech smoked meat processing equipment. Herbert “Herbie” Morscher, the third-generation family member and co-owner of the shop along with his partner Peter Kotarowski, shared that the decision to close was due to an expiring lease and a quadruple rent increase enforced by their third business partner who owns the building they are located in but has not been “actively working” in the shop for a long time due to health issues.

We will always remember finding this gem on a small side street in Ridgewood and falling in love with its amazing neon and handpainted signage and its homemade Tirolerwurst and Bratwurst. We included our photo of Morscher’s Pork Store in our latest book “Store Front NYC: Photographs of the City’s Independent Shops, Past and Present” (swipe left for 2nd photo of page spread). Please let us know if you have visited this amazing shop and what you will miss most about it.
C2 Imaging produced the "wallpaper" in the background of this Macmillan Publishing window front. Little did we know, just how adorable the window display would be in the end.

Yashica Mat 124
Kodak Portra 400 pushed to 1600
The light meter on the Yashica Mat 124 only has settings up to 400iso, so I had to guess the exposure. In practice, the 400iso setting underexposes by about a stop, so I could basically set the meter for 800iso and guess for 1600iso.

We moved into our storefront at 3404 N. Figueroa St. in May of 2012. I took until October of 2014 to get this sign made and electrified. There is a huge tree that blocks it, so it was always more of a symbolic gesture to have a nice sign up above the storefront doors.
The vinyl work was done by James Cerasani. The electrical work and installation was done by Somerset Waters of the Pacific Electric Worker-Owned Co-op.

Love Shoe Dept.'s neon and the fact that it still has "the" at the beginning of it.
