What: To protest Biden’s inaction on Line 3 and demand that he and the Army Corp of Engineers revoke the permit now.

Support Indigenous communities in Minnesota who are putting their bodies on the line trying to defend their home from the construction of the Line 3 tar sands pipeline.

Tell President Biden to get off his ass. He pledged to be the climate president, and it’s in his power to put a stop to this pipeline.

1

That the Government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency, it must reverse all policies not in alignment with that position and must work alongside the media to communicate the urgency for change including what individuals, communities and businesses need to do.

2

The Government must enact legally binding policies to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and take further action to remove the excess of atmospheric greenhouse gases. It must cooperate internationally so that the global economy runs on no more than half a planet’s worth of resources per year.

3

We do not trust our Government to make the bold, swift and long-term changes necessary to achieve these changes and we do not intend to hand further power to our politicians. Instead we demand a Citizens’ Assembly to oversee the changes, as we rise from the wreckage, creating a democracy fit for purpose.

4

We demand a just transition that prioritizes the most vulnerable people and indigenous sovereignty; establishes reparations and remediation led by and for Black people, Indigenous people, people of color and poor communities for years of environmental injustice, establishes legal rights for ecosystems to thrive and regenerate in perpetuity, and repairs the effects of ongoing ecocide to prevent extinction of human and all species, in order to maintain a livable, just planet for all.

Photo from the Climate Strike and march in Pittsburgh on 9/24/21. Information from the event on Facebook: The world is in a state of emergency. Across the globe the climate crisis is wreaking havoc on our communities, destroying our homes and livelihoods, and leaving death and destruction in its wake. The message is clear: our extractive system has resulted in the greatest crisis we have ever faced, and now we must rise to combat this monster of our own making for all of our futures. We cannot let politics or corporatism convince us that there is no way to stop it, because there is: a just transition from fossil fuels to a regenerative economy.

We know this can't be done in a day, but the fight has begun and now we must act strongly to show those in power that we are united and will not back down. That is why we are calling on you, citizens, organizations, and communities, to join us in this fight. To be truly united for a future that reflects justice for all.

Our Demands:

Represent Youth in Local Climate Decisions. Pittsburgh politics has failed to be truly representative of all its communities, especially its youth. We want diverse representation at the table and an actual part in the decision making process- we are not pawns for press points

Ban Fracking! In addition to exacerbating climate change, fracking harms our communities and destroys our county's beautiful wild spaces. That is why we demand Allegheny County ban all new fracked gas wells and move towards closing all remaining wells, while ensuring the protection and new employment of their workers.

Tax Big Business for Green Infrastructure. Big Businesses like UPMC and fossil fuel companies must be taxed to help fund new Green Infrastructure programs; these programs will get us to the 100% renewable energy threshold mandated by the latest IPCC report

Stop Line 3! We are demanding that the US Federal Government halt ongoing construction of Line 3, an oil pipeline being constructed in Minnesota which will not only potentially leak harmful chemicals into the environment, but contributes to fossil fuel infrastructure and the ongoing environmental racism and treaty violations against Native Americans particularly the Anishinaabe. More info: stopline3.org

Just Transition and Clean Jobs for All. We are demanding a Just Transition to 100% renewable energy and a regenerative economy by 2050 and a crucial part of that will be ensuring that all people have clean, green, healthy jobs that pay a living wage.

Fight for Intersectional Climate Justice. As a movement, as communities, and individuals, we must acknowledge the intersectional nature of our struggles and work together towards the goal of a safe, healthy, and regenerative future. We need to put aside the idea that our movements are separate, and address issues of race, class, gender, identity, policing and government in tandem with our environment.

Who We Are

This strike has been organized with, endorsed by, and supported by an amazing network of powerful local organizations all of whom we'd like to recognize for their contributions and efforts!

Sunrise Pittsburgh, Socialist Alternative, Green New Deal for Pittsburgh, Ohio Valley Environmental Resistance, the Izaak Walton League of Allegheny County, Putting Down Roots, 350 Pittsburgh, Clean Water Action, OnePennsylvania, Breathe Collaborative, Heartwood, Pittsburghers Against Single-Use Plastic, Green Party of Allegheny County, Palestinian Solidarity Committee, Asian Solidarity Alliance, Pitt Asian Student Association, Protect Penn Trafford, Casa San Jose, Women for a Healthy Environment, YOU, and more to come!

Here is a video I created about the street mural in front of the Oakland Federal Building I participated in. I helped paint as well as took photos and video. Some of my footage was used in this very well produced video by Peter Menchini who was nice enough to give me some credit for my drone shots here: vimeo.com/518389092

I'm on the Faith Outreach Working Group of The Poor Peoples Campaign representing The SF Quakers and our Peace and social Concerns Committee. The Poor Peoples Campaign notified me about the event because it might be a good fit for my art background.

Here is some info about the action that help you understand the reasons behind it.

This street mural was painted on February 27, 2021 on Clay Street, peacefully blockaded directly in front of the Oakland, California Federal Building using nontoxic clay and tempera paints.

For seven years, Indigenous communities in Minnesota and their allies have been resisting the construction of Line 3, an oil pipeline connecting the tar sands in Canada to Wisconsin. Enbridge Energy, the company responsible, has a terrible environmental track record, and this pipeline would violate several treaties with the Ojibwe people and cross 200 bodies of water.

In February Lakota youth from the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River tribal nations ran over 93 miles back to the Oceti Sakowin Camp site to call on President Biden to shut down the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The youth are asking for everyone who stood with Standing Rock four years ago to join this call.

We are responding to a call from Indigenous leaders to be in solidarity with the Water Protectors by blocking an entire city block in downtown Oakland and painting a large street mural with the words: STOP LINE 3 & DAPL - BUILD BACK FOSSIL FREE.

This action is part of “Build Back Fossil Free,” the solution-ary push on the Biden Harris Administration to end the era of fossil fuel production, and protect communities reeling from the climate and COVID-19 crises.

My visit to the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul coincided with the Stop Line 3 protest by the Anishinaabe people about the potential environmental harm to their treaty lands that a proposed tar sands pipeline would cause. At particular risk is the cultivation of wild rice on those lands. Senator and former Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey overlooks the scene: he came to office representing the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota. The tufts of wild rice adorning his memorial suggest that he would have been sympathetic to the protest.

Outside the Minnesota State Capitol today where around a hundred were still holding space in protest against the nearing completion Line 3 pipeline after their permitted event expired. Minnesota Department of Public Safety told the Star Tribune they made 4 arrests.

WELLS FARGO: PROTECT FUTURE GENERATIONS -DEFUND LINE 3 & FOSSIL FUELS!

San Francisco Financial District

April 9, 2021

Hundreds gathered with a message for Wells Fargo:

- Defund Line 3

- Defund Fossil Fuels

- Fire Wells Board Chair Charles Noski!

A giant street mural was painted the length of a city block, with individual circles painted by 10 different organizations envisioning a world where future generations are protected.

__________

From stopline3.org:

"Tribal nations, community and environmental groups in Minnesota have fought for six years to stop Canadian oil giant Enbridge Energy from building the massive Line 3 pipeline in Northern Minnesota, to take oil from Canada’s tar sands region to Superior, Wis.

The pipeline violates several treaties with the Ojibwe people that establish their right to hunt, fish, and gather along the proposed route. The pipeline would cross 200 bodies of water, including the Mississippi River twice.

If built, Line 3 would carry hundreds of thousands of barrels a day of tar sands crude oil -- some of the dirtiest oil in the world -- and would contribute the equivalent of 50 coal plants worth of carbon pollution to the atmosphere. Its carbon footprint would exceed the entire state of Minnesota’s and, like Keystone XL, would extend the economic viability of the ultra-polluting crude oil source in a way that one expert famously called “game over for the climate.” "

STOP LINE 3

Minnesota Governor's Mansion

St Paul, Minnesota

May 26, 2021

1000 Grandmothers from the Bay Area and beyond, Lakota grandmothers from South Dakota, and grandmothers from the Twin Cities joined together in front of the Minnesota governor’s mansion to support the critical work being done by Indigenous groups in northern Minnesota to STOP the LINE 3 pipeline.

This coming week, the Canadian company Enbridge, is expected to resume drilling for the pipeline, after a pause for the big spring thaw. This next phase will take them under the Mississippi River at multiple crossing points in order to move almost 1 million barrels of the dirty tar sands oil a day from Alberta, Canada to Superior, Wisconsin. The route of Line 3 passes through Minnesota’s pristine northern lake region, Anishinaabe treaty lands and wild rice lakes and the headwaters of the Mississippi River. While an older version of the Line 3 pipeline already exists, this new version would be larger, carrying more dirty oil and has an altered route that crosses a wide swath of new lake and river region and treaty lands. All this at a time when it is critical that the world finally address the massive threats of fossil fuels to our climate and the well being of all future generations.

As I write this, thousands are expected to be heading towards northern Minnesota to answer the Indigenous call to join them in the fight to STOP the Line 3 tar sands oil pipeline. This "Treaty People Gathering" has been called by Honor the Earth and 15 other groups: “On June 5-8, we will gather in Northern Minnesota to put our bodies on the line, to stop construction and tell the world that the days of tar sands pipelines are over.” While others are making their way to Minnesota, I’d really like to encourage those who can’t do this to offer their support to all those who will truly be putting their bodies on the line. This was the message of all the grandmothers that gathered at the governor’s mansion. This is our responsibility… to stand with the youth and solidly support them in any way that is open to us, as they do what needs to be done for their own futures and the generations to come.

Please consider following Honor the Earth and contributing in any way you are able!

The Jewish Youth Climate Movement, with support from the interfaith organization GreenFaith, led a non-violent civil disobedience action on October 18, 2021 outside of BlackRock’s New York headquarters to demand the global asset management firm stop funding the fossil fuel industry.

Across the globe the climate crisis is wreaking havoc on our communities, destroying our homes and livelihoods, and leaving death and destruction in its wake.
