Climbed in my wellies for Rob Woodall's 9th and final curry stool with Jen, Rick, George, Martin and the Littlewoods.
Spurring stool at Wilder Farm State Park Santa Cruz county. The stool was use by farm hands to take thier spurs on/off to break in horses.

This stool is made using some old pallets. After being broken up and de-nailed, the individual boards were glued and clamped together, cut into a round, lathed, planed and sanded. The legs were formed by splitting an ash branch to give a natural looking finish. These legs were then mortised into the top to give strength and rigidity.

The back window at Fin MacCool's is painted orange white and green, which turns the room psychedelic when the sun sets.
One of my buddies wanted to get into woodworking and I figured I could use an extra stool in the shop. This one is slightly different in two ways. The first is the size of the legs and the second is the size of the little support bars in the legs.
To make this stool, it would cost upwards of $8 depending on what kind of 2x4 you buy, but I bought some cull lumber and I used some scraps, so it cost about $2.
Materials
Starting on the far left is a support bar for the legs. It is 1.5x1.5" and 7" long. To get these, just set the fence on the table saw to 1.5" and rip twice, and boom. you'll need 4 of these at 7 inches, so it might be a good idea to take a 14 1/8" 2x4 and rip that, then crosscut.
Next is the legs. They are 28" long with a line drawn 12" up from the bottom. The height of the legs is based on the height of my wook bench. I'm a tad bit over 6' tall, so my work bench is about 3' off the floor. Anyway, you'll need to make two dado cuts in each leg. I don't have a dado blade so I just make multiple masses on the table saw. The dado cuts are made on either side of the line at 12" and are 1/2" deep. When the support bars go in, one pair will be above the 12" line, and the other will be below it. It doesn't really matter which pair goes where, just something to take into consideration when cutting.

I forgot about the little block at the top that adds a LOT of stability and holds things in place. This will be four 2x4s cut to 6".
Finally the top. The top is very simple: two 12" 2x4s and two 5" 2x4s. Put them into a frame shape so there is a 5x5" hole in the middle, and that is the top. On the next stool I make, I will probably take a router to it to curve off the edges, but that isn't necessary.
Assembly
The legs are the fun part. The 7" support bars go into the dado slots while the 6" support bars (not pictured) will go at the top, but still between the legs. The lower support bars can either be attached with just glue and clamping if the dados are tight, or for a quicker project, just a screw from the outside. The top supports I like to attach with a pocket-hole screw from the inside. Kreg makes nice jigs for this, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to use it, so I just drilled a much bigger hole and a pilot at a nice sharp angle.
To attach the seat part, I used the same pocket-hole method, coming up from the bottom.
