"The air trembled between growl and silence.

Haru stood before the beast, her black robes breathing with the wind, the mark of its claws still fresh across her cheek.

Behind her, the Master watched—faceless beneath the hood—flanked by hounds that paced and snarled, eager to see her fail.

“Are you sure it will let itself be tamed?” she asked, her voice thin as smoke.

The Master did not answer.

Only the wolves did—raising their gaze toward the pale light, as if they already knew the truth: that to tame something wild, you must first offer it the wildness within yourself." thks Haru

The above quote is ascribed to fight manager Joe Jacobs, when he attended his first game of baseball. It was the opening game of the 1935 World Series on a very cold day in Detroit. When asked what he thought of baseball, he said, “I shoulda stood in bed.”

We’ve had some exceptionally cold weather here in Northern Colorado. I bought this hood a few months ago so I could still get out in cold weather to take photo walks. But for the past 4 days no amount of protective gear is enough, and I’ve been pretty much housebound. We’ve seen minus 20 to minus 25 Celsius, and brief highs around minus 15. I think the rest of the week will finally see a warming trend – thank goodness. I’m going nuts in here!

For We’re Here! -- where we are all wearing Backwards clothes.

He stood at the edge of the dock, the boards beneath him damp with mist and memory. The sea stretched out like a forgotten canvas, gray and endless, swallowing the horizon. Somewhere beyond the fog, a sailboat drifted-silent, untethered, like the promises he’d made and failed to keep. The lighthouse blinked slowly, a pulse in the distance, steady and patient, as if it had been waiting for him to look up. He hadn’t come for the view. He’d come to face the silence.

He used to have a compass-not in his hand, but in his heart. A sense of who he was, what he stood for, how to love without faltering. But somewhere along the way, he’d lost it. Not in a single moment, but in a thousand small ones: missed chances, careless words, the slow erosion of integrity. He hadn’t just lost his way. He’d failed to live up to the man he swore he’d be. And in doing so, he’d failed her-the one person who saw him clearly, who believed in him even when he didn’t.

The wind tugged at his coat, as if urging him to turn back, but the dock was the last place he remembered feeling honest. He came here hoping the sea might forgive him, might carry his apology across the waves. And then, through the fog, the sailboat shifted-its sail catching a sliver of light. The lighthouse blinked again, brighter this time. Not a warning, but a welcome. A way forward. A whisper: You’re not beyond redemption.

And in that moment, something stirred. Not absolution, but the possibility of it. A warmth in the chest, a quiet resolve. Maybe he couldn’t undo the past, but he could choose the next step. He took a breath, deep and briny, and stepped forward-not away from the shadows, but into them. Because sometimes, the light finds you not when you deserve it, but when you’re finally ready to earn it.

Happenstance - Flamingo Beach

Taken at Haslingbourne,on outskirts of Petworth from the A283 to Pulborough.

With the mist covered countryside on our journey to Lewes, these 2 trees stood above the misty scene here.

These are similar shots but thought I would process them different.

Petworth is a small town and civil parish in the Chichester District of West Sussex, England

Just stood here awaiting the cold, slow moments before the sun finally makes it over the Eastern horizon was wonderful.

Firstly, I was getting my breath back after my last minute decision to make the mad dash up here to catch the unexpected, unforecast, glorious, sunrise. Secondly, just to see this scene slowly unfold in front of my eyes, when all forecasts predicted clear skies.

This was a very rushed composition, I confess and I think I managed to make up for it later with some much more balanced and worthy images. BUT the sky at this moment was just beautiful, so I thought it was worth an airing on here!

This is Newbiggin Crag, looking out East towards the Yorkshire Dales about 10 minutes before sunrise.

Stood under the spreading tree

I see a land, wild, wide and free

Where life does feed, roam and fly

As hopes, fears and fate, travel the endless sky

Above the beauty , i do see

Stood underneath the spreading tree

Stood in amazement watching small cascades of snow descending down this mountain ridge . Really mesmerising seeing how this ridge changed in the high winds and honestly cant believe there was not a full on avalanche .. My images don't do this scene justice ❤️

I stood watching this bird for a few minutes. Despite the muddy appearance, it was unable to place any weight on its right leg, hopping around the marsh, even feeding on one leg as shown here, unable to use it to apply leverage from that leg in pulling out the worms. It had clearly adapted to this situation and seemed quite able to feed itself.

The building had stood abandoned since 1992. Once home to the offices of the Financial Benefit Insurance Company, it was left deserted after the company suddenly went bankrupt amid the recession. For decades, no one had set foot inside. That changed when a real estate developer, interested in purchasing the property, began exploring its rooms one by one. Eventually, he found himself in the basement, at the end of a long corridor, in the archives room. As he restored power to the building, the hum of fluorescent lights flickered to life, joined by the faint whirring of old desktop fans. Then came the soft, steady drip of water. He glanced at the dim blue glow coming from an old monitor, but something felt off. The desktop wallpaper wasn’t static—it was gently rippling.

An impressive looking quartet of Wheeling & Lake Erie painted "tigers" lead an eastbound Wheeling 643 out of Norris Tunnel and onto the equally impressive Kelly Trestle at Dawson Pennsylvania.

I've wanted this shot for sometime now and fortunately lucked out on getting this. For most of the year this location is not easily accessible without a multi mile hike from the road being this is on a state game lands road.

Down in the Jacobs Creek Valley below stood home to the very first Iron Furnace West of the Alleghenies to ever be built, which was completed in 1789 as the Alliance Furnace. It's ruin's are still visible today when walking down along the creek flats and the location was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

She stood half within herself—one face drawn into thought, the other cast upon the glass. Between them, a thin plane of reflection held what words could not: the pause between motion and meaning, the quiet fracture between being and appearing.

The street behind her moved with its usual purpose—cold air, hurrying feet, a city indifferent to the inward turn. Yet here, time seemed to slow. The cigarette burned like a clock, each exhale dissolving into breath and light. Her reflection looked away, as if unwilling to meet her own gaze.

Perhaps we all live with such doubling—the self the world receives, and the one that lingers just behind the surface. The one that speaks, and the one that listens. We learn to carry both: the calm mask and the restless truth, the smoke that rises and the silence that remains.

In that fleeting stillness, she was both solid and spectral—present yet retreating, grounded yet elsewhere. The other side of stillness is not motion but recognition: that even in our quietest moments, we are never wholly alone.

I stood here for a while taking several shots of this scene. I was waiting for the right group of people to be walking away from the camera, the "right" depth into the scene. After looking at the many photos I took, I noticed was that most people walked down the sides of the path, even if they were alone.

We stood some time up there, the strength of the blue hue only intensifying. There aren't many 'tall' buildings in Innsbruck. Looking to our left, construction was taking place on a new tall block of flats.

Presumably, the lack of taller buildings keeps the view of the dominant mountains, regardless of where in the city you are. Who wants a big grey building spoiling your natural view?

Time Stood Still #2, Talacre Lighthouse

I stood for a while in this spot waiting for someone to come through that would provide a shot like this with the sun casting a combination of brightness and shadow.

They stood in the open square before the DOM — one with a cross, the other with a sign that read zu blöd. I don’t know if they were together or if chance had written their alignment, but for a moment the scene felt deliberate, as though faith and doubt had stepped into the same frame.

The man with the cross held it as one might hold an apology, or a burden too familiar to name. The other stood motionless, expression unreadable, sign lifted like a quiet verdict. Around them, tourists and worshippers passed — some looking away, others pausing, perhaps unsure which man to understand.

Cologne has a way of drawing paradox into the open — belief beside disbelief, reverence beside protest — and still, the cathedral rises over it all, patient and unoffended.

Stood in the water, rising up

Out of the deepness of natures cup

Branches stripped, spreading bare

Into the sky, through the air

Thrusting from natures cup

Out of the deepness and rising up

Stood in the dark on a very wet night in the middle of Derbyshire with a camera rotation tool.

It's been a while since I did any camera rotation photography. This is a process whereby the camera is rotated on it's lens axis during a single photographic exposure. For each rotation, it's necessary to replace the lens cap so as to prevent stray light hitting the image sensor. Which is just as well as it was still raining at this point!

I still feel the need to explain that this image was captured in one photographic exposure.

she stood still, map in hand, her fingers tracing paths that twisted and turned, just like the alleys of palma. the plaza mayor was nearby, but it might as well have been miles away in her mind. sunlight cut through the shadows of the old streets, her silhouette cast sharply onto the patterned tiles beneath her feet.

a tourist, no doubt, searching for direction in a city where the streets seem to have a will of their own. the grid of the tiles below her mirrored the confusion—orderly but endless, a maze of lines leading everywhere and nowhere.

the photograph captures that moment of pause, the stillness of someone caught between where they are and where they want to be. palma does that to you, makes you lose yourself before you can find your way again.

I stood at this spot in the countryside and you could honestly have heard a pin drop ... oh, so peaceful!

Stood waiting for the mist to lift over Strandön this morning. It was so peaceful all by myself (with the odd bird). Nature didn't disappoint!

A stubborn Highland Cow stood in the middle of the road at the junction of The Struggle and the Kirkstone Pass right outside the inn.

Window down and a quick shot as we negotiated the hirsute obstruction.

Took 4 attempts and nearly an hour to upload this image and yesterday's was the same. It's become a chore to share or comment on anything. Latest support ticket answer as to why my feed only shows the previous 24hrs images from people I follow and sometimes not at all is there is nothing wrong at their end. If I change the time and date on my computer then it only shows the images from that date, nothing before. They've rebuilt my feed 15 times now. Loading times of my feed are horrendous, the shot details aren't being shown despite knowing I've saved them to be, and it's a lottery if my comments/replies get shown.

It's the same on my pad, phone and desktop. Also appear to have fallen off the 'explore' list too and speaking to others they are having similar problems.

Very disappointing considering I pay for it. Subscription runs out in Sept so I'll have to start a new account and delete 300+ images on this one.

I stood still in the deep woods of unanswered desires where passions are high and guards are down.

I had longed for this creature of the night to reside in my ready yet still vacant town.

As the creature approached loud, hard, and unrelenting, I found myself losing all control...and consenting.

My heart raced and my breath shook, yet I began to bloom.

The creature of the night comes for me and my empty room.

This photo was taken after twilight in the snow storm a few weeks ago. May you all find a few thrills as you start your new week. Thanks for your kind favs and comments. Happy Sunday!

Eilean Donan is recognised as one of the most iconic images of Scotland all over the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish Highlands.

Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries.

Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of toil and labour the castle was re-opened in 1932.

There are four generations of the MacRae family past, present and future who are still the Constables of Eilean Donan Castle today.

When i stood on the side of the embankment, looking over and across this valley, i knew it was one of those black and white moments. I always think that this is the best way to show off all the different tones in a view is like this.

This photo is another panoramic shot, 18 vertical shots in total, stitched together in Photoshop, its a bit of a beast of an image measuring nye on 62" in length, so please be sure to visit the larger high res version via the flickr link, which i'll post in the comments. I've even had to scale it down for Flickr..

One thing i really liked was the chap down by the waterfall taking a photo as it gives you a sense of the immense scale of the location. Can you spot him? He asked if i wanted him to move, but i said no...you dont get that very often these days as people will blindly just walk in to your shot even though they can see you framing up, looking through the camera.

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

Pipette wasn't like other dogs. Sure, he loved long walks and belly rubs, but his true passion was the newspaper.

Every morning, as soon as the first rays of sunlight peeked through the curtains, he'd race to the front door, his big, bright eyes fixed on the mailbox. With surprising agility, he'd jump, grab the paper in his mouth, and gently drop it at his owner's feet.

This ritual had become a tradition in the household. Pipette had started with simple games, bringing toys or sticks. But he quickly realized that the newspaper was the object that brought his owner the most joy. And what pleasure he took in seeing his human smile when he arrived with his precious cargo!

The neighbors were amused to see such a dedicated dog. Some even left him small treats as a reward. Pipette had become the neighborhood mascot, the little four-legged mailman who always knew how to bring a little cheer.

One day, the human mailman was on sick leave. Pipette, worried about not seeing his friend, stood in front of the mailbox, looking thoughtful. He seemed to understand that something was wrong. But when the new mailman arrived, Pipette greeted him with the same joy as always, showing that his dedication was not limited to one person, but to the mission he had given himself: to bring the newspaper every morning.

And so, day after day, Pipette continued his work, bringing not only news, but also a dose of happiness and tenderness to those around him.

For all those times you stood by me

For all the truth that you made me see

For all the joy that you brought to my life

For all the wrong that you made right

For every dream you made come true

For all the love I found in you

I'll be forever thankful baby

You're the one who held me up

Never let me fall

You're the one who saw me through

Through it all

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn't speak

You were my eyes when I couldn't see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn't reach

You gave me faith ?coz you believed

I'm everything I am

Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly

You touched my hand I could touch the sky

I lost my faith, you gave it back to me

You said no star was out of reach

You stood by me and I stood tall

I had your love I had it all

I'm grateful for each day you gave me

Maybe I don't know that much

But I know this much is true

I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn't speak

You were my eyes when I couldn't see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn't reach

You gave me faith ?coz you believed

I'm everything I am

Because you loved me

You were always there for me

The tender wing that carried me

A light in the dark shining your love into my life

You've been my inspiration

Through the lies you were the truth

My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn't speak

You were my eyes when I couldn't see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn't reach

You gave me faith ?coz you believed

Stood at the side of the lake

You see the waves , dance and break

You see the trees, rise up tall

As their reflections, sink and fall

Joining the waves on the lake

Where wild beauty they both do make

Lone tree standing in the green

Its branches blooming, its beauty seen

Kissed by the rain, kissed by the sun

Catching the air when it does run

Over the countryside coloured green

Where natures beauty now is seen

After getting stood up by 103 the morning before, we were determined to hike back up the bluff at the east approach to Pogamasing. We'd be guaranteed the Budds and theoretically 103 (although we got stood up on that front again).

Under much different lighting than the clouds the day before, #185 stealthily bolts west amidst the backlit birches and boreal forests along the pristine banks of the Spanish River.

Stood up at 5:30 AM, arrived at the heath at 6:10 AM and was surprised that already about 30 cars were there - I expected two or three other photo enthusiasts. I could take a couple of images, but after 45 min the mist and magic was gone.

Side by side in the snow

Beautiful nature stood in a row

With their branches, spread and bare

Reaching out to catch the air

That does silently, invisibly flow

Around the trees stood in the snow

I stood for ages to try and photograph this sculpture without anyone in the shot but eventually gave up.

It was actually quite comical - people would get out their car or bus, walk right past the row of people trying to get a photo and walk to the end of the sculpture to look out to sea - the exact same view you get if you stood 10 meters back where we were. Strange

She was stood in the sunlight, shimmering against the dark mountains behind. I asked her politely to move back from the fence for a cleaner shot, but she hesitated and refused. I might have got over the fence myself and led her away but I still have memories of being bitten by a pony a few years ago when I tried to get it to move into a better position.

And I'm stood like a lightning rod, on my own in the flat landscape.

Waiting for my lift back to the Langstone Harbour Hotel and no idea when it will turn up.

The storm ended up dumping its load further west, over Langstone, Havant and Portsmouth so I was saved a good soaking.

This was just a hiccup in the heatwave, the following day even hotter, cloudless and more humid, so I spent most of it wandering around Chichester...until my ill-fated attempt to cross the Wadeway and its wild oyster-beds to the hotel.

As if time had stood still.

The Sudetenland region was part of Austria-Hungary until 1918 when it became part of the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic after World War I. The presence of a significant German minority led to tensions between Germans and Czechs, which the Nazis exploited after Hitler came to power in 1933. Through the Sudeten German Party led by Konrad Henlein, the Nazis stoked dissatisfaction, leading to the demand for the region to be annexed by Germany, a request that was granted through the Munich Agreement in 1938. The Sudetenland was under German rule for six years, and the entirety of the "rest of Czechoslovakia" was occupied by Hitler in 1939, enduring Nazi oppression and terror.

Post-World War II, the German residents were expelled by the Czechs as a form of retribution for past atrocities, guided by the Benes Decrees that aimed to eliminate perceived dangerous German minorities from the re-established Czechoslovak state. These displaced Germans, known as refugees, had to abandon most of their belongings and rebuild their lives in the western regions.

Remarkably, the Sudetenland experienced minimal combat during World War II, resulting in little destruction. Today, especially in rural areas, much remains unchanged, offering visitors a sense of stepping into the past as if time stood still since those events nearly 80 years ago.

Hassop Hall, which has stood in one form or another in the Derbyshire countryside since the 14th century, was last used as a hotel but is now being transformed into a large-scale modern mansion house.
