The custom is to place a small stone on the grave using the left hand. This shows that someone visited the gravesite, and is also a way of participating in the mitzvah of burial.
Another reason for leaving stones is to tend the grave. In Biblical times, gravestones were not used; graves were marked with mounds of stones (a kind of cairn), so by placing (or replacing) them, one perpetuated the existence of the site.
The stone has nothing to do all day but rest and watch vehicles hurry past. Are those blood stains trickling down it's ancient back, by the way?
I decided to add this to Guess Where, after all, seeing as you're all so good at it.

This small carving is comprised of two pieces; a canoe-shaped one and a stand. As a whole, the piece measures 8.5” long, 4” wide, and 3” high.
