As promised, the iconic lone pine tree in Killbear Provincial Park in infrared.

For a few years I was making the 300 mile round trip drive to my parents house on a regular basis and would pass this watering hole along the way (and back). It got to be my favorite subject to shoot while driving. I'd point the camera in the general direction of that windmill and click away, never knowing for sure just what I got. Both of my parents have passed away and I haven't made that trip in quite a while but it's always fun when I run across one of these shots in the archives, bittersweet as they are.
The bighorn sheep in Yellowstone make it possible for just about anyone with a cellphone to get a headshot. On my recent visit, I was trying to be a bit more creative. Taking a series of photos that might not only find a place on one of my walls, but also exemplify the iconic nature of these stoic creatures and bring home a small, yet representative space from one of America’s most quintessential national parks. This is the second in the series.
This was a few minutes before it honed in on something and then I managed to get some great shots of it catching and devouring a fish.
The shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) also known as whalehead, whale-headed stork, or shoe-billed stork, is a very large stork-like bird. It derives its name from its enormous shoe-shaped bill. It has a somewhat stork-like overall form and has previously been classified with the storks in the order Ciconiiformes based on this morphology. However, genetic evidence places it with the Pelecaniformes. The adult is mainly grey while the juveniles are browner. It lives in tropical east Africa in large swamps from Sudan to Zambia.

The wind was blowing just enough for me to miss the focus in this shot. I still like the composition, though.

Captive animal in a small enclosure. I overheard some onlookers next to me think this creature was smiling. Who knows for sure, but watching the neurotic elephant and Andean condor didn't give me much encouragement.
