The Ed Sullivan Theater, on Broadway between 53rd and 54th Streets, was designed by Herbert J. Krapp and opened in 1927, as Hammerstein's Theatre. It became a television studio in 1950, and soon became home to The Ed Sullivan Show. Famously, the Beatles performed here in February of 1964, sparking the British Invasion. In 1993, the theater became the home of the Late Show with David Letterman, and in 2015, of its successor, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

In September 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten printed twelve cartoons of Mohammed which, four months later and fueled by interested parties, eventually led to massive unrest in the Muslim world (including more than 100 deaths), burnt embassies and international tension.
