My 5D MkIII left the confines of my condo for the first time. So where do I take it? To the beach. It got sandy, covered in salt spray, and I let friends spin molten metal towards it. I guess if it survived that, it's good to go. Tomorrow it's going to Death Valley.

On an unrelated note, I just learned the LR4 will not yet handle the .CR2 file from the new 5D Mark III. This is a .JPG straight out of the camea. Shame on you Adobe!

*Update: Adobe released LR4.1 about 2 hours after I posted this. I always suspected they were checking out my photos!

Five Canadian Abandoned Ghost Towns

In late 2019, I had an idea to visit abandoned ghost towns and villages in every Canadian province and territory.

This idea came after reading the book ā€œThe Whisper on the Night Windā€ by Canadian explorer and author, Adam Shoalts. Adam and I had worked together on a new way to help promote his newest book, I would read the book, interview him and do a video review about it. I got to speak with Adam at great lengths about this adventure and his many others.

The book is about an adventure that Adam and his friend Zach embarked upon to find the lost ghost town of Traverspine in Labrador and investigate sightings of the Traverspine Gorilla. You can learn much more about this on Adam’s website here:

I started researching and planned to start with the many abandoned fishing villages and ghost towns in Labrador and then visit a different province or territory every year.

This monumental goal was to start in May 2020 - but then the world shut down!

Fast forward to 2022 and things were getting back to normal and 2023 would be the year where I started this project and I decided to start in Saskatchewan. In addition to several other places of interest in Saskatchewan, I visited 5 separate ghost towns on my trip.

I did visit a smaller ghost town in Quebec in 2022, while it’s not a true ghost town, it looks a lot like one. It was a movie set for a film called ā€œThe Education of Little Treeā€ from 1997 - the set was built on private property and most of the buildings are still there today.

In 2024, I took on what is probably the most ambitious ghost town in all of Canada, Anyox, BC. I spent one whole week in Anyox documenting as much of it as I could.

For this weekend's video and posts, we are featuring 5 of the ghost towns that I have visited:

This project continues, in 2025 I will visit some of the ghost towns right here in Ontario, in August I am travelling to Alberta, Canada and in 2026 - I am heading to the Arctic, but I haven’t yet decided where yet. Adam Shoalts highly recommended that I go to the Yukon, and I think I am leaning that way!

Here is the video featuring these five abandoned ghost towns from 3 different Canadian provinces.

It was my first try with this technique, but boy it was fun. It was nice to meet and shoot with such a energetic group ! This particular shot was a result of two spins in parallel from the Bridge at Multnomah falls. How do u like the cookie monster ?!!! By the by, no monsters were harmed in the making of this photograph :)

Steel wool light trails at Stinson Beach.

Getting these shots (more results will follow) was rather risky. The tunnel is in between 2 bends of the road and even this late busses and taxis shoot through them at high speeds.

Luckily the trains go slowly on this piece of the track.

1st Fireplay of 2019.. hopefully not the last.

To create this shot I hung this old film reel from a bar held up by two light stands. I attempted to hang it by thread but that instantly snapped when the weight was put on. I switched to something a bit stronger with some thin copper wire. I then spun wool from both sides to create the crosshatching wool lines. I used a 50mm lens to create some nice thick lines in the background. I did some very minimal editing to completely remove the wires from the final image. I probably confused my neighbors with all the sparks flying around in the backyard, but it was pretty fun. šŸ˜‚

Bringing sparkly love to Limburg

This is part of a project from my VPA-306S (Digital Public Art) class about interventions titled: "There is life here.".

This is a composite of two images, I did several shots of this same photo as a single exposure, but I couldn't get it quite right.

The account of my night. It follows the order my images are in.

I had a fun but frustrating time taking these pictures. After getting off work at midnight and driving back to Monterey from Watsonville (I was sent to a different store for the week), I drove out to Fort Ord. After getting into the pool, checking to see if anyone was there, and setting up my shot, I realized I had everything but a lighter. I couldn't find anything in my car so I had to drive home and back, and start my set up process all over (now about 1:30am). Luckily, I was able to get the shot I wanted on my first try. I then moved into the pool where I set up for my next photo.

Once in the pool, I wanted to try and do something different so I decided ti create a spiral/ tube like image with steel wool, then create a "Ball of Light" with a second piece of steel wool. However on my first attempt I forgot to set my camera from a 30second exposure over to Bulb, so I ended up wasting a piece,; however, I got what I wanted on my next try. I then drove to a parking lot for some of the dorms on campus which was about 2 miles from my next location. As I was getting out of the car, I saw campus PD heading my way, they tried to sneak up on me with their headlights off but utterly failed, only to drive away as I started walking towards the dorms. As soon as they were out of sight I started walking towards the large warehouse that's behind the Visual Public Arts buildings.

I had never been to the warehouse before, and tried to find my way around without attracting too much attention as it's completely open. I struggled with creating clean, well shaped orbs as it was still really dark inside so it was hard to keep track of where my reference point was, also my arm and wrist was getting really tired.

Luckily this time I didn't start any fires despite the small spaces (I did have an extinguisher with me, mainly as a prop for potential encounters with police and firemen).

In an effort to catch back up from this past week, I counted more than one picture on some days.
