November 2nd, 2024 - Sunny skies and mild temperatures are abundant in the Pittsburgh region for this Saturday afternoon. Not much is happening around town, it's relatively quiet out with people casually stirring about. A blaring horn breaks into the sounds of the valley, steadily increasingly, noting the arrival of a northbound double coal train passing through New Eagle, PA.

The Monongahela River is visible in the background while the train is passing through the few remnants that belonged to Murray Energy's Maple Creek Mine prep plant. The mine and prep plant closed in 2004, with majority of the preparation plant being demolished in 2009.

Unseen and unpraised, you tend to the soil and you feed us all. Only when it rains do you show yourself, and then you make me smile. You are so pink and soft, and you hug the earth with your entire body.

I’ve been seeing a lot of you this winter, but only now did circumstances come together to where I found you with my camera. And how extremely cooperative you were, crawling along steadily in a straight line while I struggled with the focus and framing – and then you broke my concentration because you would lift up your front end in an investigative movement that made me chuckle! It’s the same instinctive motion we all have in common and understand, but it’s so cute when you do it!

I want you to know that I see you and I praise you, humble rainworm! You work tirelessly to maintain the health of our living earth. You set a good example that I wish we would follow.

Be proud of who you are!

It was tricky to hike down to the base of this local waterfall but I did it by carrying my camera in a hip pouch. That was easier on my back and it left my hands free to hold onto rocks and roots to climb down the path. But a tripod was out of the question. I did find a large flat rock at this angle to set my camera on and set the timer to try to get a sharp shot of the water and the varied layers of rock and clay in the escarpment ledge that the water drops over. This kept the camera rock steady. The sky was pretty grey so there was no point to include that. Since the water flow is less than usual, I think I like the veiled curtain effect of the flow. It was a bit windy to try a slower shutter speed. I was just glad to be down there again and enjoying the peacefulness of the moment. I felt rock steady myself. The fall colors are not as vibrant as usual this year. Our autumn season has been too warm with not enough cold nights to bring out the vibrancy in the colors. However, I am happy with the warm temperatures this year as I get outside as often as I can.

Yet another in what feels like a steady stream of cherry-red SD70ACUs, (not that I'm complaining!) CP 7037 in this case, leads an SD60 westward on the "Cut-Off" through downtown Milwaukee with a junk freight bypassing Muskego Yard. In what should be a few years, this line will be bereft of almost all freight traffic, as CP constructs a new double-track main through Muskego Yard itself, reducing conflicts with Amtrak traffic on the "Cut-Off".

……Whilst rocks may make a solid foundation! You’d wonder just how trees like this cling on or even get the nutrients & water they need to survive!!! Taken on a walk around Buttermere. Alan:-).…….

An afternoon of waiting at Dawn, the west end of the siding at Tolono, IL, netted a short 181 powered by Norfolk Southern's recently repainted Illinois Terminal heritage SD70ACE. Typical ending to a typical day of 'fanning middle Illinois, alternately suffering under a steady downpour or bright clear sun. Sorry, no duck-under light here, but of course, farther west it seemed glorious.

A view of a 1½-inch washer with severe etching and scarring and its surreal reflection in water. The frame represents a span of 1½-inches across.

I found this washer on the ground while out-and-about and was taken by all the scarring and etching it had endured; it looked as though it had traveled a thousand light years from another world.

Strobist info:

The scene was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights and a red LED flashlight. The speedlights were positioned at 8- and 4-o'clock, one foot above and two feet away from the washer. They were fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄16 power through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes.

The red LED was used to illuminate the background and for rim light and exposed for 1.6 s. A warm overhead room light contributed to the gold etching highlights within the washer and the orange hue to the red LED.

The SB900s were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X flash triggers.

As I was coming down from one of those artificial hills, I saw it sitting tight on the fence, steadying itself against a very strong gust of wind. Surprisingly a pair of Kestrels wasn't too far away. Downsview Park, Toronto.

Santa Fe 5581 leads a well powered eastbound train through the world famous "Tehachapi Loop" at Walong, California.

From Wikipedia: "The Tehachapi Loop is a 3,779-foot-long (0.72 mi; 1.15 km) spiral, or helix, on the Union Pacific Railroad Mojave Subdivision through Tehachapi Pass, of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, south-central California. The line connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Mojave Desert.

Rising at a steady two-percent grade, the track gains 77 feet (23 m) in elevation and makes a 1,210-foot-diameter (370 m) circle. Any train that is more than 3,800 feet (1,200 m) long — about 56 boxcars — passes over itself going around the loop. At the bottom of the loop, the track passes through Tunnel 9, the ninth tunnel built as the railroad was extended from Bakersfield."

Hold Steady. San Jose, CA 2018

The river freezes over, snow blankets the earth, wind scatters the tumbleweed across the yard. The rooms are quiet, and full of dust motes as abandonment settles in. So begins the steady process of decline and decay.

a man, standing against the whispers of an oncoming storm, balances on the edge of the sea. the fishing rod in his hand is steady, but the air feels heavy, charged. the waves glimmer under a dull sky, their rhythm a warning, their pull a promise. in portixol, before the winds came, there was this fleeting quiet. the kind that settles deep in the bones, like a story waiting to be told.

Taken in Santa Rosa, CA, USA. This image is uncropped, unstraightened, and was taken without the use of a tripod or monopod. Although I handhold for most of my shots, I can't say I get many that are balanced enough in the frame to post without even the slightest alteration. And this was the last (and most coincidental) shot of my day of shooting on Sunday, which makes it feel all the better.

A thick swirl of white cloud is about to envelop us as we near the base of the summit.

Todays posts are very different for me. The 3 images are of the beautiful Moraine Lake but all are in very different light and circumstances. The first was a snapshot taken in wonderful light and weather during my holiday in June. The second and third were taken 3 days apart in September while on a landscape photography trip. You can probably tell I learnt a bit about composition even if the light didn't play ball. We were hoping for a nice sunset and reflection in the second image but the weather had other ideas and amazingly in the third, where we were hoping for a lovely sunrise and reflection, we were treated to a wonderful unexpected snowy scene. I will always remember the third visit as the snow was slippery on the climb up and even more tricky on the way down where I used one leg of my tripod to steady my footing and balance. In town I tried to purchase some YakTrax to attach to my shoes to make walking in the snow easier only to be told that they don't normally have snow until October and hence they don't stock them until then!

As always constructive criticism is welcome.

An image from the last time I climbed Scafell Pike. That day I took three former work colleagues on their first ascent of Englands highest hill. They are seen here shortly after setting off on the return to Seathwaite.

Amazing how this owlet was able to hold his head steady while forcefully flapping its wings. Shot at 1/60th of a second.

It was this chaps first time across Striding Edge and the way he balanced gave a good clue to that. At least the weather was perfect with no slippy wet rocks nor wind.

I had climbed at a good rate and was more than happy to take a seat on the grass at the start of the ridge. It made for a great vantage point to watch everyone else gingerly make their way across. It was also a good while since breakfast so perfect timing for my snap.

This ballerina was in an alley just below Pikes Place Fish Market in Seattle.

Hi Flickr Friends! I miss you all. I'm stopping in sporadically right now as I still have a lot of bride photos to work on. However, I just had to post something to let you all know I'm still close by.

For all of you in America, I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! And for those of you in other countries, you can still join us by being thankful for what God has done for you.

Blessings,

LuAnn

On a mild morning at the weeping willow

I take off my shoes and

Put my feet on her trunk

I lean my back against a stone

Who is a good old friend of mine

I close my eyes and hear a blackbird

A balmy breeze that comes and goes

The language of this place is steady

Euphonic like a singing bowl
