Peter Denny FRSE LLD (25 October 1821 – 22 August 1895) was a shipbuilder and shipowner based in Dumbarton, Scotland. Denny was the son of William Denny (1779-1833) and his wife Christeanne Macintyre. He was first apprenticed to a local lawyer and then to the Dumbarton glassworks. Aged 21 he returned to shipbuilding, which was the established family occupation, and worked as a bookkeeper for Robert Napier and Sons. Quoted from Wikipedia

"Life comes before literature, as the material always comes before the work. The hills are full of marble before the world blooms with statues."

The Angel is a memorial to King Edward VII, sculpted by Newbury Trent.
This statue of young male god is dated to the time of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD).
This has usually been identified as Mercury though there is some uncertainty. The figure has the following god attributes (symbols): a winged hat (petasos), a staff with two serpents (caduceus) in his right hand, and winged feet. The money bag in his left hand is said to be a later addition.
The statue stands in the corridor surrounding the courtyard at Palazzo Nuovo.

We were lucky to get evening tickets for the Louvre museum. It is such a stunning place in a stunning environment. But so overwhelming at first.
We only got to spend maybe 2 hours wandering around the museum, taking photo after photo, and making sure we got to see the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. These iconic masterpieces are the anchors of the museum, but they are surrounded by wonderful works of art from all over the world and from many eras.
The next time I visit the Louvre I promise i will be more organised, more relaxed and less rushed. I think you could spend days and days submerging yourself in the artwork and the place. Magical. The Statue of Sekhmet in the Egyptology section of the museum stood out for me. I loved the look and the history of the piece. There’s a cheekiness to it too!
There are so many wonderful statues in Cologne.
After WWII one out of ten buildings was left standing.
As a result the city is a mishmash of architectural designs.

Cool!
I almost walked past this beautiful hindu or buddist statue that seems to be saying "Safety first".
One thing about this two week trip:
Digital SLRs have come of age.
All 3 cameras performed without a hitch.
I did not take along a laptop to download the images every night.
Instead I used a 16GB memory card in each camera and carried one spare battery for each.
Simple.
I dislike using computers when on vacation and am quite happy with the state of things now.
Oh yeah, all three cameras passed through several scanners without a hitch.
This living statue was dressed with a message of peace. When given a tip she blew a kiss to the generous donor. In a flickr search I found other photos of her in Rosie the Riveter garb and other golden outfits.

A Very Strange Statue
In 2014 there was much comment about an attempt to place a 13 foot-high statue called "The Don" outside an office development at 132-134 Hills Road.
Cambridge City Council’s public art officer described it as “possibly the poorest quality work” that has ever been submitted to them.
The sculptor, Pablo Atchugarry, disowned the piece claiming he had never seen it before.
Lots of comments in the media (Google “Cambridge Don Statue”).
Nothing more seems to have happened for several years until this statue appeared at 132-134 Hills Road.
It was not in place in April 2019 when the Google Street View vehicle went by, but it was there in September 2020.
It has a plaque in front saying
"HRH Prince Philip
Duke of Edinburgh
Chancellor
University of Cambridge
1977 -2011"
However I can find absolutely nothing about it.
I mailed the property company who own the site (Unex Holdings) asking for information but got no reply
Comparing this statue with the pictures of "The Don" suggests that this is a modified version with some gold paint.
