The area where tree cover was gained from barren areas was the smallest category of forest gain, with only 11,000 acres. Counties affected by surface mining in eastern Kentucky show some forest gains, reflecting reforestation efforts.

Don't you hate it when you get false information? I was told that this test was due on Tuesday. Then later today, while I was out, pretty much for the whole day, someone texted me that this is due TOMORROW. EFFFF.

This is my statistics teacher, Mr. Amon.

He lets me be barefooted in class, is THE most patient person with me, ever, ever. And, of course, he let me paper mache his head. How awesome is that? :)

P.S. We are learning confidence intervals.

Portland, Maine – with 17 'craft' breweries, one for every 4,000 residents, the highest per capita rate of any U.S. city– is the top city for beer in the United States, according to financial analytics company SmartAsset.com.

Number two is Asheville, North Carolina. With 19 'craft' breweries, it is one of only two U.S. cities (Portland, Maine, the other) that has more than 10 breweries for fewer than 100,000 residents.

***************

To compile its list of 25 best 'beer' cities, SmartAsset ranked 296 cities according to the average of 5 weighted metrics:

▶Total number of microbreweries and brewpubs (double weight).

▶Number of microbreweries and brewpubs per 100,000 residents (full weight).

▶Number of bars per 100,000 residents (full weight).

▶Average Yelp score of breweries (half-weight).

▶Average price for a pint of domestic draught beer. (half-weight).

* By microbreweries, the author of the study meant 'craft' breweries, as defined by the [U.S.] Brewers Association.

The statistics are from research I did a few years ago.

Suicides data come from Denver County Vital Statistics, which are online. I used the years 2002-2006. Every life has one death. Therefore, what people are dying of is what they end up dying of. Really straightforward, when you think about it.

Credit card debt - my notes say this is from a 2006 article online that cited 2001 statistics.

The other data come from "Denver Healthy People 2010" wire-bound book reporting health status from 2008, pages 13 and 16. I have not checked the link printed in the book, but hopefully that is still available online: denvergov.org/hp2010

(Looks like it's now Healthy People 2020 but has a link to 2010, but my dialup is too slow to check if the page numbers are the same as my hard copy. The library is closed as I write this update.)

Here's an excerpt from Étude Medicale et Statistique sur La Mortalité. A book I found on Gallica. This is the very beginning of the book (obviously), and he begins by simply touting the importance and utility of statistics. Furthermore, in scanning some of the rest of the book (208 pages) I found other places where he does this again, saying how useful statistics are for governments and such. I thought this was a nice illustration of the effort we talked about in class that was put in to gathering statistics around this time period. I could not find information on the author, one Dr. L Vacher, so I dont know what his relationship to the french government was but nonetheless, I think the spirit is captured. I have included multiple other interesting pages from the book, for consideration. He compiles a great deal of data on death and cholera from four different cities. The obsession with stats is pretty cool.

I love the rebellious look on the sign-toting guys face.

So, the story goes, me and invisible_worm were walking around Santa Barbara when anti-war protesters came our way. So, we joined em. And it was fun. And happy. And I wanted to skip and sing. And that guy gave me a hug. And I later proceeded to drop one of my lenses in a fountain. But still, this was awesome.

Shot from a ledge shortly before I jumped off it with a peace sign held high.
