International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde delivers a statement on the conclusion of the IMF's Executive Board regular five-yearly review of the Special Drawing Rights (SDR) November 30, 2015 at the IMF Headquarters in Washington, DC. Lagarde stated “The Executive Board's decision to include the RMB in the SDR basket is an important milestone in the integration of the Chinese economy into the global financial system. It is also a recognition of the progress that the Chinese authorities have made in the past years in reforming China’s monetary and financial systems. The continuation and deepening of these efforts will bring about a more robust international monetary and financial system, which in turn will support the growth and stability of China and the global economy.” IMF Staff Photo/Stephen Jaffe

Low resolution clip taken from very old video footage.

In 1983, Port Parham, in South Australia, faced a turning point.

Between the proposed Department of defence extension and the proposed airport at Two Wells, Port Parham and it's residents were about to become extinct.

A battle begun that ran for almost 4 years. 6 elderly residents passed away during the battle and in the last year, it looked like the future of the area for public use, was clouded.

The Army had created the "Department of defence, Proposed extension of the proof and experimental establishment, Pt , Draft environmental impact statement"

The Department of defence needed to test larger guns. The current area was the army firing range, Gun testing range and munitions testing area.

They needed to expand to test the new (At the time) 155 mm Howitzer. They needed to test it up to 6 times a year and needed 30 kms extra area (The range is 40 kms).

The Army faced three options.

Option 1 was to acquire land all the way up to Pt Prime (All the way from Sandy Point). This included Port Parham (Inhabited), Webb Beach(Inhabited) and Thompson Beach

(Uninhabited). Pt Prime being a previous shelling range and not a very nice beach). That leaves no real beaches north of Adelaide.

They did consider relocating all buildings and people to Pt Prime/Thompson's beach. Thompson's beach had no houses or infrastructure yet.

This plan would have been end to private land development planned at Thompson's.

This plan would include $5.5 million to acquire 5000 ha of land.

Option 2, move the firing range further north and fire into the existing area.

Option 3, close and relocate the firing range.

The preferred option for the Army was option 1. This meant they would compulsory acquire the land, lease it back for 10 years and close the beach. You cold see the beach but not

access it for the rolled up security barbed wire and armed men on hovercrafts. This was deemed to be in the national interest and a matter of "National Security. It was highlighted that

the Pt Wakefield range was the only lace in Australia where they can test the ammunition like this.

The army had been testing munitions in the mud flats since 1929 and it is littered with dangerous unexploded ammunition. They also test destroyer 5" navel shells and it is impossible

to recover all the shells. The Army has had access to the sea and airspace North of Pt Prime since the 2nd world war. (For all types of Weapons testing).

The army fired at high tide and retrieved munitions at low tide and then inspected them.

The area of Pt Parham was allocated to the army in 1937 for defence purposes. From 1978 government allowed freehold land and local council had been approving building permits.

The area North was not considered to have any restrictions except a building height restriction of 15 feet. The army approved many dwellings over this height since 1978.

The current proof range has been in use since about 1944. It is currently Sandy point to about 2 Kms north of Pt Parham. It is looked after by the Keswick Barracks which is a barracks

of the Australian Army in Keswick

As option 1 was pushed into the public space, it lead to all kinds of protests. During these, the gun on Pt Wakefield road was turned into a tent, defaced and graffiti.

This started the fight for land and homes. This plan would kill Pt Parham. Some of the current residents had been there since the depression. Some of them had settled in the area to

retire. There were 100's of full time residents and thousands of shack owners and other visitors that frequented the area.

The residents don't want to have the Army contaminate Pt Parham for all time, like they have where they are at the moment. They have already admitted that they will never be able to

clear the current mudflats of dangerous unexploded material. The residents also feared nuclear testing.

In July 1983 a document was released that outlined the process to compulsory acquire land. This is when the battled heated up. There were many meetings in the old social club (Grain

store - Webbs Carbonate of lime), at Collins Corner and beside the old shade house on the esplanade. There was a 13 point protest plan developed and issues were found in the

environmental impact study. Many people from Pt Parham and Webb beach attended the meetings, as did many holiday makers from across Australia.

People started to paint their fences and roof's with slogans.

"Army go home"

"P*ss off Army"

"Use a pond"

"Move the gun"

"St Kilda Next?"

"Sorry My Beazly, not for sale"

"We have enough shells"

"Only Beach north of Adelaide"

"People before Guns"

"I don't trust them"

"Not for Sale"

Hat's, stickers, shirts and beer cools came out with the slogans

"Save the crabbers and the gulf"

"Save the crabbers from the army shells"

I still have my yellow hat somewhere with the "Save the crabbers and the gulf" on the front. It is likely a rarity these days.

ABC, Channel 7 and 10 frequented the beach to have interviews with the residents and fly over the site in their helicopters.

Kevin Collins (member of Action Committee), Ian Featherstone (Chairman - Parham Action committee) and Leon Broster (Chairman Mallala council) appeared regularly on the news to

show that they were against the plans.

Local member John Meyer(?) and Lands minister Mr Abbot were against it but it was a federal issue and they could do nothing.

Len Web was interviewed. He had lived at Port Parham all his life and ran the shell grit plant. Shell grit is not widely available and sought after for poultry.

Col. Phillip Cooper and Major Andrew (Andy) Renolds came to Port Parham meetings to try and explain why this needed to happen. Barry Tompson of the

"Pt Wakefield friends of the proof range" wanted it to go ahead as he did not want Port Wakefield to die. He did not want the proof range to move.

Kim Beazley, the Federal defence minister, wanted to wait on the environmental study before making a decision. Premier John Bannon was against this.

After the battle, Kim Beazley compromised. In the end 2900 ha was acquired including 16 farms and 2 houses inland.

Pt Parham gave up 2 kms of land and coast (It was the army's anyway) and Port Parham has thrived ever since.

I still have access to the old footage.

Just arrived in Valencia on our Cosmos tour, October 15, 2012.

On a tour of the City of Arts and Sciences. It is an entertainment-based cultural and architectural complex in the city of Valencia, Spain. It is the most important modern tourist destination in the city of Valencia.

The City of Arts and Sciences is situated at the end of the former riverbed of the river Turia, which was drained and rerouted after a catastrophic flood in 1957. The old riverbed was turned into a picturesque sunken park.

Designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela, the project underwent the first stages of construction in July 1996 and the finished "city" was inaugurated April 16, 1998 with the opening of L'Hemisfèric. The last great component of the City of Arts and Sciences, El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, was presented on October 9, 2005, Valencian Community Day.

As a girl growing up in the 1950s, my imagination was captured by what we now call the Middle East. Oil and Religion were not part of my daydreams. I fancied life as a Desert Nomad—traveling with a camel caravan on my spirited Arab stallion—enduring blistering heat, blinding sandstorms, and broken-promise mirages... Just in the nick of time, an Oasis would appear! Shaded by date palms, and offering cool water, the sweet song of birds, and the pungent aroma of exotic spices, I would rest in my spacious tent—resplendent with richly patterned rugs and ornaments of gold..."

Make a statement next time you take a trip to the grocery store with this cute and durable tote bag! Never again will you have to use those ugly disposable plastic bags!! It is similar in design but is wider, taller, and much more attractive...a win win situation! Lovingly handcrafted using fun, high quality cotton fabric from Michael Miller collections.

This eco-friendly reusable market tote bag stands out from the rest and is specially designed to fit on the bag holders on the stands used by most stores!

Besides being much cuter than a plastic bag, this tote is:

*Easy to load and carry.. the handles are wide to distribute the weight making it more comfortable to carry.

*Easy to clean - machine wash (cold) and tumble dry low

*Fully lined and reversible - looks great and adds strength

*Strong and tough - this tote is deceiving as it is not only pretty but tough too! All seams are double stitched and the handles are reinforced.

*Easy to store - when you're done, simply fold up your tote and toss it in your purse or keep it in your car for your next trip to the store!!

Measures approximately 14" wide x 14" high x 6" deep. Made from 100% cotton fabric.

Shoutout to fellow Etsian keykalou for the design and pattern!

With Avengers: Endgame finally in theaters, it's only natural that the only Infinity War figure from Hot Toys I ordered finally shows up.

Portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, Dr. Strange played a pivotal role in the Infinity War movie. I'm pretty sure that everyone who has watched this movie isn't exactly blown away by this statement.

What you may not be as familiar with is the drama when it came to the Hot Toys figure.

Hot Toys released a Dr. Strange from his standalone film, which effectively is the same as the Infinity War one, except for the head sculpt.. but I'm jumping ahead of myself. Once the collecting public realized that Dr. Strange got dusted in Infinity War, there was a mad panic.

It was probably close to a month after the release of the movie, and Hot Toys had not announced anything about an Infinity War Dr. Strange figure, even though he played an incredibly prominent part in the movie. Believing that there would be no further figure releases for Strange, the original figure starting commanding stupid high pricing, sometimes in the neighbourhood of almost $700 USD, way, way up from it's MSRP of about $250 USD.

Scalpers who had been "smart enough to stock up" started effectively selling at whatever price they felt like. Despite multiple calls for collectors to basically calm down and not to add fuel to the fire, people were still being people, and bought they from scalpers anyway.

Prices were jumping higher and higher everyday, with collectors calling Retail Aftermarket Sellers opportunists - understandably so, but opportunists none the less, and with the Sellers retorting that they were victims of "market value", and that collectors were simply bitter because they weren't smart enough to preorder.

Sellers had the upper hand, as it were, for weeks, growing more bold by the day.

Then one day, it all came crashing down. I don't remember exactly what day it was in May 2018, but I can tell you this much: the moment that Hot Toys announced the Infinity Wars Dr. Strange figure, the aftermarket scalping of the original figure effectively came to a grinding halt. There was much rejoice in the collecting community, with the exception of sellers who were now stuck with MSRP Dr. Strange figures, or if I may say so myself, potentially bitter "friends" that bought their scalper priced figures because they were informed that there would only ever be one.

From personal experience, one seller was so salty about this change that he proclaimed the 2.0 figure to be a piece of garbage and that we were all failures at life because we couldn't afford a $700 USD Dr. Strange figure.

It was fun, fun times. There have been a few close calls here and there, most recently with Infinity War Thor, but overall figures that are jacked up in price are because they really are sold out.

My figure finally arrived after I'd say a 5 month delay or so over the original Hong Kong release. Not that I was in a hurry or keeping track, but it was amusing to marvel at just how many of the damn things Hot Toys sold that even as I write this there are people who ordered it all over the world who still haven't gotten their order.

So, now that it's here, lets dig in, shall we?

As with most Hot Toys figures, Dr. Strange comes packed in a windowed box with a slipcover. These ones slightly differ from norm by having a cutout in the bottom right hand corner to show the Avengers: Infinity War logo that is printed on the inner box.

As mentioned above, the contents of the box are effectively the same as the original figure. Identical items are as follows: same gang hand signs, two Sling Rings, an open and closed Eye of Agamoto, full fabric outfit including magnetically attaching Cloak of Levitation, two orange magic energy effect discs, and two sets of magic energy rings meant to mimic the effect in the movie (one set orange for general magic, one set green for when the Time Stone is being used). Both sets also come with a dynamic stand, albeit branded differently.

The headsculpt, which features the Infinity War hairstyle, is naturally different. One of the original accessories, the Book of Cagliostro, is no longer here (not a part of the movie at all) but has been replaced with four new magic effects, including a square effect, a larger round magic effect, an effect for the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, and his sword construct. The Infinity War version also comes with a backdrop to mimic the effects of the Images of Ikon, where he multiplies to do battle.

I have to say, this is the first Hot Toys figure in a long time that I've personally been impressed with. The other ones have been pretty good, but the amount of work put into the design of his outfit is insane. It's pretty much all cloth (except for the belts and other such areas) and what is neat, at least for me, is that by staring at a miniature version of the character, you notice these fine details on the costume that you normally wouldn't even notice, like the various puffs on his boots and belt, and the asymmetric nature of the Cloak of Levitation.

The cloak attaches using three magnets, and generally holds in place but can move out of place when you're posing the main figure. There are some wires embedded into the cape itself, but I didn't find much use for the wires and wish they had simply made this a weighed cloak so it would drape down correctly.

Articulation in general is not hampered by this outfit, and this is the first Hot Toys figure I've opened in a long time that didn't come with a precautions list to follow when moving the figure. Sadly, Dr. Strange lacks any real neck movement other than pivoting, and has zero ankle articulation. This does limit the types of pose you can put the figure in, dynamic stand or not. The outfit SHOULD allow you to do overhead arm poses, but I can't say I bothered trying, particularly since you would need to remove the cloak to do it in the first place.

Paint work is, as always, top notch. Paintwork on the hair and mustache/goatee are phenomenal and really doesn't give me much to complain about, if anything. Paint on the Eye of Agamoto is also, unsurprisingly, solid.

Speaking of the head, the detailing is extremely well done, from the hairs on his head and face, to the subtle wrinkles on his face. The sculptor captured the shape of Benedict Cumberbatch's face and jawline very well, but I am of the belief that his hairline, particularly how close the grey parts slick to the side of his head, wasn't close enough, giving him, ironically, a fat head. Not that it changed from the prototype, mind you - this was always something I was weary of.

Another complaint I have is his eyes. For lack of better terms, it almost feels to me that as good as the Hot Toys sculpting team is, it's like they really don't get the shape of Westerner eyes. They're always way too small, if not too close together. Benedict Cumberbatch isn't an anime character, but he certainly has rounder eyes than what we see here.

Fine detailing isn't limited to the the head and outfit - each of the magic accessories also has a plethora of detailing in the form of the many mystic symbols and glyphs that exist in the world of Dr. Strange. it's quite impressive the amount of work that went into these.

While the coloured plastic pieces will never truly replicate the glowing CGI of the movies, most of the pieces do an acceptable job. The square coloured one, however, just looks really dumb. There really is no other way of putting it.

In the end, this figure truly is what ownership of a Hot Toys figure should feel like - premium quality all around, with just enough engineering limitations and design screw ups to remind you that this is an action figure.

To my Darkness and my Light,

I unfold myself; you, in turn, call to me with your warm and aching mouth— its tongue, a delicate command I will not long withstand.

Your lips spill sighs; I drink until your thirst is sated.

Trembling hands steady me beneath you. You guide me toward your deepest acceptance. I find a center in you; you grasp me and gasp.

(You shudder— hands bracing the afternoon light dying against such white walls. I see with the eye of god your ineffable Beauty. I fall and place this feeble kiss to caress the spine of your neck as I pass.)

With you I experience annihilations most will never know.

After I am restless; you know that what I want is what I will never manage alone— you coax from my every ending its next beginning.

We must map these new and nameless oblivions together.

Repetition and Ritual

The sculptures for the show were created this summer and were inspired by the idea of repetition and fungi forms in nature. These pieces center on the creative act as personal obsession. This work is the beginning of an exploration of the idea of repetition and ritual experienced through the process of making. A prescribed order of assembling, manipulating, and presenting the materials borders on ceremony. Ritual is also found in these works and in this process.

These obsessions are expressed with the laborious act of felt making, the oldest known textile form dating back 8,500 years and also fungi, one of the oldest life forms, dating back one billion years ago.

In making this work, repetition is used to single-mindedly pursue, refine, and purify an idea. Repetition and obsession is an effort of holding a visual image or idea in the mind for extended periods. The profound techniques in art of repetition lead us from the repetitions of habit and daily life.

Repetition can be transcendence. Repetition is the capturing and stopping of time.

These forms are based on clusters of fungi I found in the forest this summer. These clusters would sometimes be comprised of hundreds of small round forms. The pattern work is an abstraction from mushroom spore prints that I made from the caps of foraged fungi. When placed under a glass over night the mushrooms release spores and make beautiful intricate forms.

My fascination with fungi stems from the idea of life cycles that has been ever present in my work. Fungi relies on mostly decayed organic matter to live, thus continuing the idea of the cycle of birth, life, and death. The physical becomes spiritualized. I construct forms to represent the sacred in universal archetypes of immortality and regeneration. It represents a desire for wholeness. Through ritual process I hope to manifest the magical to the physical.

Rather than recognizing this as an opportunity to position itself on the cutting edge of urban agriculture and participatory research, the University raided the farm on Monday, May 13, at 4:30 a.m. and violently arrested four peaceful farmers, three of whom were held for more than 60 hours before being released without charge. The University then ploughed over the farm that morning, destroying thousands of starts that, if nurtured, would have provided sustenance to local communities.

“This land has been vacant for years,” said an Occupy the Farm member, Matthew McHale, “the UC only destroyed the crops because it’s afraid that if the community sees what an amazing asset this would be as a community farm, they would refuse to let it be paved over.”

In protest of the UC’s actions, more than eighty farmers and community members re-converged on Monday afternoon for a rally, then marched back onto the farm to replant the field and recover some of the starts they had planted over the weekend. The University plowed the farm again Tuesday morning.

Since Occupy the Farm first planted on the Gill tract in April 2012, the group has organized at least 10 public forums focused on the Gill Tract as an asset to community-driven participatory research. The UC Berkeley administration has consistently failed to attend, despite being invited repeatedly. Students on campus however, support turning the land into an urban farm; last Spring the Associated Students of the University of California Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of Occupy the Farm."
