OK, it says: "America Kills Innocent People (100,000 civilians in Iraq, 100's of American citizens by death penalty in prisons, esp. TX and FL) and consists of lots and lots of religious fundamentalist freaks who carry guns (!!!) and shoot people. The America of freedom is gone. Long live the America of patriot acts and suppression of human rights."). America fund the Taliban.

Title: Dead Pool deFence

Theme: Mission to Mars

Student Statements:

Ryan: 1. I used a pencil to draw and a paintbrush to paint the background and the letters. What we drew on fabric that has a tan color. 2. Because we like the game it’s based on, when I look at it, it reminds me of good times when I played this with me uncle. When I was young.

Jacob: I took a 2 x 2 Ft. piece of fabric and painted two borders on the top and bottom then the rest of the canvas I put paint and water into a spray bottle and sprayed the rest of the canvas with black paint. Me being inspired by the game Space Invaders, and what they set up for the video game world. So I did that for my theme. First, I put a 3 at the bottom left to represent the space ships lives. Second, I wrote Mission to Mars at the bottom. Third, added the green aliens, then I put in the main space ship but painted him red, then added the barriers. I made this because how the game started. So much for video games, just like what the Mission to Mars will do for our space adventure.

Christopher: We took a paintbrush and painted a black background then painted our ship and enemy’s. We used a napkin and dabbed orange onto our meteoroids, painted a white top and bottom so you could see a score and name.

We chose our image because people are trying to colonize mars and we are defending it as Dead Pool from its perilous colonators (aliens).

Kyler: I started off with a blank canvas that I cut and then I cut out stencils of each of the aliens we sprayed the whole background with black then painted each and every alien. Then I painted all the bonkers and words by hand and used maroon paint and a napkin to dab the bonkers with paint to give it texture. Then I painted on the words Mission to Mars. Then I used a black spray bottle and sprayed the top line with white and black speckles. We all did a good job and I think it looks good.

Governor Tomblin applauds

BOMBARDIER aerospace EXPANSION

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (November 15, 2016) - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin issued the following statement after an event he participated in with Bombardier Aerospace officials today, where it was announced that the aircraft manufacturer plans to expand its plant in West Virginia:

"From my first days as West Virginia's Governor, I've made it my priority to bring new investments and jobs to our state. Today's expansion announcement by Bombardier represents continued momentum toward a stronger, more diversified state economy. I thank and congratulate Bombardier, its leadership team and employees on this milestone. And I look forward to seeing the far-reaching impact of new jobs in North Central West Virginia."

Bombardier Plans Expansion of Maintenance Capacity at its Commercial Aircraft Service Centre in Bridgeport, West Virginia

Bridgeport, November 15, 2016 – Bombardier Commercial Aircraft and the State of West Virginia today announced plans to expand Bombardier’s aircraft service center in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The planned expansion is intended to enhance Bombardier’s capacity to provide heavy maintenance, component repair and overhaul support for its CRJ Series and Q Series aircraft. Ground breaking for the project is expected to take place in the spring of 2017.

“The fleet of Bombardier commercial aircraft in North America has grown to over 1,620 CRJ Series regional jets and Q Series turboprops – that’s an impressive fleet number that can only be supported by expanding Bombardier’s service centres,” said Todd Young, Vice President and General Manager, Customer Services, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “We’re excited with this growth plan for WVAC, as it confirms our commitment and ability to continue to deliver on the comprehensive service solutions that our customers have come to expect from us. In addition to serving our operators with improved turnaround times and enhanced service solutions, we are also pleased to be collaborating with the State of West Virginia on this project.”

“From my first days as West Virginia’s Governor, I’ve made it my priority to bring new investments and jobs to our state,” said Governor Earl Ray Tomblin. “Today’s expansion announcement by Bombardier represents continued momentum toward a stronger, more diversified state economy. I thank and congratulate Bombardier, its leadership team and employees on this milestone. And I look forward to seeing the far-reaching impact of new jobs in North Central West Virginia.”

The announcement was made at the facility and was attended by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, other local government representatives and members of the Bridgeport business community. Alongside Todd Young, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft was represented by Stephen McCoy, General Manager, Commercial Aircraft Service Centres; and Chad Hill, Director of Operations, WVAC.

The existing 145,000 square-foot (13,470 square-metre) service centre, would double in size to approximately 300,000 square feet (27,870 square metres). Currently, the service centre has a capacity to operate at 500,000 man-hours a year; post expansion, its capacity could increase to one million man-hours per year to accommodate up to 20 maintenance lines at a time -- up from the nine lines operating today.

Following the expansion, WVAC will offer complete maintenance services including a sheet metal back shop with repair and fabrication capabilities; heat treat services; non-destructive testing; CNC

machining and fabrication capabilities; tooling design and fabrication; composite repair and fabrication; welding services; interior refurbishment; wheel and tire overhaul; and paint services.

About Bombardier’s Commercial Aircraft Service Centres Over the last few years, Bombardier has secured several long-term heavy maintenance contracts –covering maintenance and repairs for commercial aircraft. Bombardier’s commercial aircraft service centres are designed to maximize quality and increase return-to-service speed within a competitive, predictable cost structure. The facilities are backed by Bombardier’s 24/7 technical help desks, in-service engineering teams and support staff deployed around the world.

In addition to the WVAC, Bombardier also operates commercial aircraft service centres in Tucson, Arizona and Macon, Georgia. Each of the three centres has received the FAA’s AMT Diamond Award of Excellence, the highest honour bestowed on an aviation maintenance employer, for many consecutive years (Bridgeport 18 years, Tucson nine years and Macon five years). The corporation also operates a US network of business aircraft service centres in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Dallas, Texas; Hartford, Connecticut; Wichita, Kansas; and Tucson, Arizona.

Artist Statement

The platters I have sent to this exhibition combine several ceramic traditions. The first is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Art Pots were made to demonstrate wealth and power. They were made to tell a story, to commemorate an event or a person, and to demonstrate skill and challenge the abilities of the artisans who made them. The second tradition is the Fish Platter. Fish platters were a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The third and last tradition is the One-Line visual and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.

Humor through the use of the visual pun was a mainstay of the California Funk movement. Humor in clay has a tradition as old as the use of the material. I have always felt that humor has been given short shift as a serious emotion. Art work that uses humor and has been actively excised from collections of serious art. It may be that we do not understand the function of humor as well as we understand the function of the other emotions.

In the work presented I have tried to inject some humor into the decorative / commemorative object. The platters are big to give them a slightly overblown sense of their own importance and to be able to be viewed from a distance . They are meant for the wall and the table. The large size to fit the importance of large gatherings.

I have tried to replace historical patterns with objects reduced to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my environment or reflections of personal interests. Images of turn of the century technology, (the Machine Age), are a personal favorite. Subject matter ranges from humorous depiction of everyday objects to gender stereotypes. My abilities as A draftsman are limited but seem to be adequate for the kind and quality of image that the subject requires. They have a cartoon look as opposed to the crisp complexity of fine china.

The clay body, a red earthenware, is heavily potted and makes no secrete of its variations and flaws. The glaze work is in the Majolica style and is done very much like a watercolor on soft paper. The pots are fired twice. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may have an additional firing to Cone 018 for low temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing atmosphere using an electric kiln.

PRESS RELEASE 16.2.17:

Will you find a Mini Fashion Statement in your pocket this April?

As the world remembers the Rana Plaza disaster on 24 April, the Craftivist Collective will be launching a new craftivism kit to make and gently challenge people to think about how their clothing is made.

The collapse of a Bangladeshi factory in 2013 saw 1,138 garment workers killed and over 2,500 injured. There had been signs of structural failure the previous day, but workers were ordered to return to work regardless.

The Mini Fashion Statements kit is being launched in support of Fashion Revolution, a global movement born in the wake of the disaster, which calls for greater transparency, sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry.

The kit feature small scrolls on which makers all over the world are encouraged to write - slowly and in their neatest handwriting on their own or in groups - one of three provocative but not preachy messages designed to get both writer and reader thinking about the true cost of fashion and inspire them to play their part in improving the ugly side of the industry.

Shop-droppers not shop-lifters

The finished scrolls, tied with a pretty bow and featuring an invitation to “please open me”, a smiley face and a kiss, can then be ‘shop-dropped’ into the pockets of garments in fashion stores, or clothes worn by family, friends and colleagues.

This deliberately non-confrontational form of ‘guerilla activism’ using handcrafts is a designed as an alternative to some the more traditional aggressive types of activism.

Sarah Corbett, founder of the Craftivist Collective, said: “We help people learn the art of ‘gentle protest’. We want every part of the fashion industry to be beautiful, not just the clothes. Our pocket-sized scrolls are powerful and poignant little reminders of the role we can play as consumers. They’re designed to make us think about how the clothes we buy and wear are made, and how we might be able to help tackle problems like poor conditions for workers or the use of materials that are damaging to the environment.”

Asking #whomademyclothes

Orsola de Castro, co-founder and Creative Director of Fashion Revolution, said: “We want to unite the fashion industry and ignite a revolution to radically change the way our clothes are sourced, produced and purchased, so that what the world wears has been made in a safe, clean and fair way.

“The Craftivist Collective’s Mini Fashion Statements are a really simple, fun and creative way to be part of the Fashion Revolution. Made with love and placed into a pocket on a store's clothes rail, they surprise shoppers with a message that reminds us to be more curious about our clothes.

“They may be small, but they have the power to make shoppers stop and consider the people who make our clothes, their working conditions and human rights issues. This shows that activism doesn't need to shout from the rooftops, it can gently provoke from our pockets!”

The Mini Fashion Statement kits were pioneered by Sarah during workshops at Stockholm Fashion Week and Helsinki Design Week, and are the first non-stitched Craftivist Collective project. Sarah will be holding further workshops in London and Lincoln in early April to introduce people to the kits and teach them how to do ‘shop drops’ to distribute their mini fashion statements.

The University of Maryland College Park issues a statement on the arrest of 87 students March 24, 1970 who were protesting the dismissal of two popular professors.

Two professors, Peter Goldstone and Richard Roeloff, were denied a renewal of their contracts. Several hundred students seized Skinner Hall March 23 for 13 hours before police were called to arrest the demonstrators

Students briefly occupied three buildings on campus again on April 6th, including Skinner Hall, McKeldin Library and the South Administration Building.

The occupations ended that day when the university obtained an injunction against “…disturbing (or) and disrupting the normal operation” of the university. Several individuals were named specifically in the injunction, including Ira Allen, a United Press International reporter. A university official said the reporter was named because of his “past associations and actions” in connection with campus disruptions.

Despite the injunction, students briefly re-occupied the South Administration building the following day.

The University of Maryland had been largely bypassed by the activism of the 1960s. There was an active Students for a Democratic Society chapter, but no mass demonstrations had been held.

The explosion that occurred in 1970, however, was preceded by a build-up. The previous fall, a protest against a university prohibition on housing Vietnam War protesters resulted in four arrests and earlier in the year, 100 had picketed a nearby draft board.

Several weeks later the campus erupted into massive demonstrations that were twice suppressed by the National Guard.
