Like many in the computer industry, I graduated from college thin and fit, but since then, through years of all-nighters, sitting in front of my screen for long hours, and a rich diet I became overweight. I went from 190 to 242 pounds as I grew into each role: graphic designer, user interface designer, customer experience researcher, businessperson, husband, father, and community member. Last Fall I said, "Enough already!"
Recently I decided that working standing up would help me live a more active life. It's worked. Along with meditating, running, hiking, and kayaking, working standing up (with hourly interludes of pushups, situps or yoga) I've dropped 30 pounds. My thinking is clearer for longer and you're more likely to find me with things in perspective.
I'm fortunate enough to work at home above Chuckanut Bay in Bellingham, Washington.
This stand up desk is a piece of cedar with its live edge intact. On it I have room for a Dell 24" monitor as well as my MacBook Pro, and my good old Monsoon sound system. The hard drive holds the documentary I am working on called "Stumblebum".
My family watches DVDs here as well. We haven't adopted the big screen tv model yet as we all have such different tastes we're more likely to pair off and just watch on one person's laptop or another.
Five laptops add up to one big screen tv, don't they?

I ended up going to a last minute doctors appointment so I was really late getting all my chores done today. Also I had to do physical therapy. I still have more to do yet tonight. My dog Alfie is going to have his saliva gland removed in the morning. I will be adding to my numbers of gray hairs with worry. Please say a little prayer for him that all goes well. I will post updates on him as soon as I know something tomorrow. Thank you my dear friends for being so patient with me and my absence. The months since my surgery have been difficult because of the complications. I really appreciate all your well wishes and prayers. Have a nice evening! Hugs!
This beautiful bear was standing on her hind legs begging for her treat. The zoo keepers have trained them to do this. Aren't they so smart!
I always feel an increased thrill when these guys stand up straight and very tall for a better survey of their surroundings .. it's beautiful.

Spoonbill Standup
So, a man receives a parrot for his birthday. Unfortunately, this parrot is fully grown with a bad attitude and terrible vocabulary. Every other word was a curse. Those that weren't expletives were rude. The man tried hard to change the bird's attitude; constantly saying polite words and playing soft music. Nothing worked. When he yelled at the bird, the bird got worse. If he shook the bird, the bird got madder and ruder. Finally in a moment of desperation, the man put the parrot in the freezer. For a few moments he heard the bird squawking, kicking and screaming. Suddenly, there was quiet. The man was frightened that he might have actually hurt the bird and quickly opened the freezer door. The parrot calmly stepped out onto his extended arm and said: "I'm so sorry that I offended you with my language and actions, so I ask for your forgiveness. I will do everything I can to correct my behavior."
The man was astounded at the bird's change in attitude and was about to ask what had changed him when the parrot continued: "May I ask what the chicken and turkey did?"
When my oldest son was a little boy he would refer to Standard Camellia's as 'Stand-up Comedians'. He even got a mention in a well known women's weekly magazine. The artwork is still in existence from his first call to fame.
Photo taken at home in Malvern Link on 18-4-15. We lost this particular one along with a very nice Silver Birch when we extended our drive. Never have got round to a replacement.
