With its dazzling combination of blue and gold

The Crucifixion is at the centre of the altarpiece. Christ is represented as dying on the cross. The Blessed Virgin and Saint John stand on either side of the cross, while Mary Magdalene kneels at the foot. This “Calvary” stands on a small altar as a witness of the unity that exists between the sacrifice of the Cross and that of the Mass.

The way to heavenly bliss

The visual composition directed upwards toward the vault of the church indicates the way to eternal happiness in heaven, an ascent amid angels and stars against a deep blue background. This ascent, as a symbol of life, is traced in the sacrifice of Christ and in the Mass.

Statues of the prophets Isaiah and Daniel, carved by the sculptor Louis-Philippe Hébert in 1882, appear on the right and left sides of the altarpiece.

Over the choir stalls on the right and left sides are six polychrome (painted) statues.

First on the right is Saint Paul, with a sword of his martyrdom in Rome, where he was beheaded. Next are two evangelists and their respective symbols: Matthew, with a winged male figure, and Luke, with his winged ox.

To the left of the altar stands Saint Peter with his keys, and the rooster, recalling Peter’s betrayal of Jesus, his master and friend on the morning of His suffering and death. Then the other two evangelists: John, holding a chalice symbolizing his love for the Eucharist, with the eagle, a sign of his far-seeing gospel, and Mark with his winged lion.

Artists Statement:

This painting captures a fleeting moment in early winter, where the landscape is transformed by the low, golden light that bathes the scene. The curving river bank, gently blanketed in snow, is outlined on the one side by trees whose tops glow with the warm hues of the rising sun. Painted in a high-key fashion, the work employs soft, coarse horizontal strokes for the water and a smoothness to evoke the feel of the flat white snowy fields, while the water—rich in greys, reds, and pale purples—reflects the cold light and the dark reflections of the trees, creating an interplay of warmth and chill.

The overall composition is designed to feel ephemeral, as the edges of the scene gradually fade into the surrounding whiteness of the snow, giving the viewer a sense of both the vastness and quiet intimacy of winter. The trees, though delicate in their soft brushwork, stand resilient against the cold, their glowing tops providing a gentle contrast to the more muted colours of the water and the snow.

In this piece, I sought to explore the subtle beauty of winter’s transitional moments, where the harshness of the season meets the fragile warmth of light. The interplay of colour and light, combined with the fading edges, speaks to the transient nature of time—how moments of clarity are often fleeting, but nonetheless beautiful in their impermanence.

Should tumble and fall

And the mountain should crumble to the sea

No I won't shed a tear

An unbelievable candid street scene. Yes, the photo is really candid (and totally unexpected!) ))) This is the old industrial area converted into a recreation center. A bar "Stand Up" is located in the cellar of the old factory building. A man peacefully sleeps on the bench just next to the bar entrance. The day is sunny and rather warm. The light is hard. The shadows are clean-cut. The cubical-shaped remnants of the old basement add notes of abstractedness and surreality to the scene. Many lines naturally point to the man. Looking at this image for more than 10 seconds makes you thirsty. The black and white version loses the contrast of the blue and red.

This old windmill seems to be bowing it's head as the sunlight comes over the hill.

Following on from my recent upload “Mind The Gap” just as we were about to saddle up and move on to the next location on Dartmoor, Horace came scurrying out of the woods and informed me that he had found some interesting rocks further up the River Dart.

Up the three of us go and this scene greeted us. It was tricky setting up with one leg of my three legged friend in the fast flowing river, so I tethered myself to Hoof, and a few shots were bagged.

Off to the next location, Hoof suggested we stop at The Tavistock Inn just up the hill from here. He thought it would be rude just to ride on by without saying hello, as this is where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, who stayed at the Inn while he wrote 'Hound Of The Baskervilles', and of course as you know Hoof was heavily involved in the film version.

However, a couple of hundred yards from the pub there was a lot of traffic backed up. Bear in mind a lot of the roads in this area are very narrow so we waited and waited.

I decided to dismount as did Horace and we went to see what was causing the tailback, this bit you cannot make up (if ever) there were six of the biggest meanest looking moorland bullocks just sat across the road chewing their cud, I just had to laugh, though other people did not see it so funny, the age we live in !

People who are familiar with Hoofs background will know that he is ex Blues and Royals and was mainly involved in intelligence gathering but he has had some training in negotiation skills plus he speaks fluent cow, so he came forward and started to talk to this group of hooligans, well even with his softly softly catch ye cow skills this organised gang of highly trained bullocks were going nowhere, a real stand off situation had developed.

Now there was traffic backing up towards Dartmeet in one direction and Ashburton the other.

With that Horace came rushing out of the Tavistock Inn, I thought hell Horace don’t you even think about having a tear up with this lot, but the next sequence of events were incredible. Horace found himself a comfortable piece of granite to sit on and started reading these challenging beasties a story (Hoof had taught Horace to read and be multi lingual)

Well Horace had not been there more than a few minutes and these bullocks took off like a Top Gun Pilot on a mission.

Horace was greeted with a huge round of applause from all the angry motorists.

So in the pub I said to Horace what did you read to them my boy, oh he said I found a copy of Mary Berry’s cookbook in the pub and I read them some story of how to make a beef casserole, plus I showed them a jar of mustard, they knew I meant business.

I will leave you with this thought, why do cows wear bells,

Because their horns don’t work.

Thank you so much for viewing, as always your comments are so appreciated🐎🐷🙈🍺🍺🍺😂😂

A sudden sand typhoon raised on the side of the road I was driving, on the way from Eilat to Mitzpe ramon.

It was very high (as you can see by the electric stands). It was over in less than 30 seconds and I noticed a few more of these, but much smaller rising around me. It was impressive and strange, but wasn't frightening in any way. It seemed harmless.
