On August 2, 1971, during the Apollo 15 mission, U.S. astronaut Dave Scott postmarked this first day cover on the Moon - an act as nationally symbolic as planting a flag. The first postmark Scott made was faint, so he made another below it. The smudges on the left side are thumbprints made by his spacesuit glove. Also in the Rover were die proofs of the two space stamps. The USPS issued the stamps on Earth using printing plates made from those die proofs.

The First of July is celebrated as Canada Day so it seemed appropriate to display some Canadian stamps. The wartime issue reminds us of the important part Canadian forces played in World War II.

The hereios of the We're Here! group have paid a visit to the Postage Stamps group today at my suggestion.

Before Ford trucks became the standard, the U.S. Postal Service relied on delivery vehicles produced by many different manufacturers. Maintaining a stock of spare parts for the fleet or finding parts for vehicles whose manufacturers went out of business proved to be a nightmare and much too expensive. So bids were opened for one (or at most two) manufacturers and Ford won the competition.
