Philately and coin collection have been my favourite hobbies when I was in school. Used to spend most of my summer vacations exchanging stamps, studying them, arranging them in my most precious stamp books, taking care of torn ones, begging the postman to let us know if there was any "foreign" mail, jumping with joy on spotting a circular/triangular/weird shaped stamp and all.

Its sad that I rarely see people buying stamps and using the post boxes, asking the postmaster if there was any new stamp in circulation, leave alone talking about stamp collection as a hobby. Maybe an ill effect, electronic mails had on them. I really miss those summer days filled with colourful stamps:(

I'm home for the summer break and was pretty happy to see my stamp collection after a loonnggg time, a collection of around 120 countries and around 3000 stamps!! Big eh?? ;p

What was/is your hobby as a kid/now??

Penny Red Victorian British stamps.

The rich inks in these delicate scraps of old paper are as vivid as they must have been when a letter to a loved one arrived 150 years ago.

Featuring a profile of Queen Victoria, drawn when she was 15 and before she took the throne, billions of these were printed between 1841 -1879 when one penny was the standard letter rate.

The black postmarks show which post office processed the letters - can anyone tell me which town '100' signifies?

Thanks to 'S' for letting me see and photograph the collection.

This upside-down blue plane within a red frame is the most famous U.S. stamp and one of the world's most famous printing errors. Only one misprinted sheet of 100 stamps was sold.

The Curtiss JN-4-H "Jenny" was a World War I airplane later reconfigured to carry mail. The issue of the Jenny stamp marked a milestone in postal history: the first regular airplane mail service between Washington, Philadelphia and New York.

On May 15, 1918, stamp collector William T. Robey went to a Washington, D.C., post office to buy the new airmail stamps. He knew that on the first sale day of a bicolored stamp, chances of an error were good. After spotting inverted images on a sheet of 100 stamps, he immediately bought it. Robey sold the sheet to stamp dealer Eugene Klein for $15,000. Today a single inverted Jenny sells for seven figures. Klein sold the sheet to collector E.H.R. Green, who had it broken into blocks and singles.

"...my heart stood still. It was the sheet of inverts. It was what you might call 'a thrill that comes once in a lifetime.' " [William T. Robey]

The First of July is celebrated as Canada Day so it seemed appropriate to display some Canadian stamps. The wartime issue reminds us of the important part Canadian forces played in World War II.

This piece of mail was salvaged from the wreckage of the airship Hindenburg. The burnt card reached its address in a glassine envelope with an official seal. At least 360 letters and cards of the more than 17,000 pieces of mail on board the airship survived the disastrous fire.
