As we were staking pictures of the sunset sky at the far end of Lake Louise toward British Columbia, I casually looked to my left and noticed this scene waiting for attention. The yellow trees high on the mountain are larch, an evergreen whose needles actually turn yellow in autumn.

This male northern yellow shafted flicker (Colaptes auratus) seems to have laid claim to this hollow tree, going in and out regularly as well as calling loudly while perching in the entrance. Announcing to all comers that this is his.
October is famous in the British wildlife world for one thing above all others, and that is the annual red deer 'rut' - a strength and endurance contest amongst males to win females and the right to mate. It's not just the red deer that do this, the two other large deer species in the UK (fallow and sika) all rut at this time, but all follow the same pattern. Rutting activity begins just after dawn, and even at 7-8am you can hear the bellows of the larger stags as they lay claim to their 'patch'.
I visited the rut with Alannah Hawker Photography earlier this week and was lucky enough to find this stag standing in the mist and bathed in the morning light. You can't see it too well here, but even his breath was misting!

Because the hyacinths only bloom for a few weeks, it's worth staking the stems so they'll look their best. Chopsticks work perfectly.

Staking out prey
The Stakes have their own logic in continuity, dividing space. They have only a sense in a group to separate but each one is singular. This is photo from a stake taken on the top of the former one. Jupiter 9 85mm is again a fabulous black and white lens.
ENGLISH:
The farmer is out and about with his characteristic beefy tractor and a stake-body cart to bring home the dried hay lying in the field. His wife and sister are standing in the trailer because sitting on the bumpy road is very uncomfortable.

Der Bauer ist mit seinem charakteristischen bulligen Schlepper und einem Leiterwagen unterwegs um das auf dem Felde liegende getrocknete Heu heimzuholen. Seine Ehefrau und seine Schwester stehen im Anhänger, weil das Sitzen bei der Fahrt auf dem holprigen Fahrweg sehr unangenehm ist.

Got him! Chased this guy around for a while this afternoon, through a parking lot and onto the trail and then back to the parking then across the parking lot and finally he stopped and perched for a very quick break before flying high up in the trees, past the range of my lens.
But still, I got him and I'm happy about that!
