MICHAEL AYRTON, RBA (1921-1975) is a British artist whose works are in prime museums collections. His culpture of Talos on Guildhall Street in Cambridge.

English artist and writer, known as a painter, printmaker and sculptor, and also as a critic, broadcaster and novelist. He was a stage and costume designer, working with John Minton on the 1942 John Gielgud production of Macbeth from age 19; and a book designer and illustrator, for Wyndham Lewis's The Human Age trilogy and William Golding. He also collaborated with Constant Lambert.

Michael Ayrton (1921-1975)
Michael Ayrton was a painter (in a variety of media), printmaker, illustrator, stage designer, writer, and eventually a sculptor. He studied at Heatherley’s and St John’s Wood Art School, and in Paris. He travelled widely before the Second World War, living for a time in Vienna, and sharing a studio in Paris with John Minton. From 1942 to 1944 he taught at Camberwell School of Art. In the later 1940s he painted neo-romantic landscapes, which show the influence of Sutherland and Nash. In the 1950s he began to sculpt in bronze. In the late 1950s he visited Greece for the first time, and his work thereafter shows an increasing preoccupation with Greek myth: in particular the legends of the Minotaur, and Daedalus and Icarus.

St. Luca, Bologna, Italy.
The Shrine of San Luca is a traditional place of worship for the presence of an image of the Virgin. St. Luca on top of Guardia hill is also a reassuring visual landmark, one of Bologna's symbols.
An arcade with 666 vaults - unique for its length covering almost four kilometres (3,796 m) - connects the shrine with the town and provides a shelter for the procession which every year since 1433 has brought the Byzantine Madonna with Child to the cathedral downtown during the Ascension week. Construction started in 1674 with the building of the Bonaccorsi archway by G. G. Monti over Saragozza Gateway.
The same architect was also assigned the designing of the final project for the layout of the arcade at the foot of the hill, with extremely sober and simple style, later followed by his successor C.F. Dotti, starting from the second decade of the 18th century. The end part of the arcade on top of the hill, designed by the latter, is instead characterised by a dynamic variation of perspectives and vanishing points up to the final view of the shrine.
The start of the climb is marked by the Meloncello Archway along via Saragozza, designed by Dotti with the likely contribution of the stage designer Francesco Bibiena. The aedicule with its curved plan and the recourse to the free column represents, together with the open area outside the basilica, the only outdoor example of Baroque in town.
Today's church was built by Dotti between 1723 and 1757 in place of an earlier 15th-century church, while the two outside tribunes were brought to completion by his son Giovanni Giacomo in 1774. The outside structure fully in tune with the Bolognese tradition, is devoid of emphatic and solemn decorations, displaying the characteristically simple curve profile supporting the dome. The indoor structure with an elliptic plan opens up in a Greek cross ending with the main altar standing before the chapel of the Virgin.

Austrian film and stage actor Gustav Diessl (1899-1948) was the hero of the first Mountain film, Die weiße Hölle vom Piz Palü/The White Hell of Piz Palu (1929). This film and others by prolific director G.W. Pabst made him at the time an unusual sex symbol: the mature, quiet, somewhat difficult man who attracts women almost against his will. Under the Nazi regime, he was often cast as an exotic villain or a mysterious foreigner.
Gustav Diessl was born Gustav Karl Balthasar in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria). He was the son of a classical scholar and studied art, painting and sculpture at the Kunstgewerbeschule (art school) in Vienna. In 1916, he worked as an extra on different stages in Vienna but he was soon recruited into the army for World War I. During his military service, he was held prisoner for a year. After the war, Diessl started training as a stage designer but he left to pursue a professional acting career. He played for a touring company and in 1921 had his first fixed engagement at the Neue Wiener Bühne (New Viennese Stage). That same year he appeared in his film debut In Banne der Kralle/In the Spell of the Claw (Carl Froelich, 1921). In the next years, he made several films, including the silent films Vineta (Werner Funck, 1923) with Evi Eva, the Austrian-Polish co-production Ssanin/Sanin (Friedrich Feher, Boris Nevolin, 1924) starring Magda Sonja, and Die Rache der Pharaonen/The revenge of the Pharaohs (Hans Theyer, 1924) with Suzy Vernon. He moved to Berlin where he worked with the prolific director Georg Wilhelm Pabst on Abgründe/Crisis (G. W. Pabst, 1928) opposite Brigitte Helm, and a year later he played Jack the Ripper in Die Büchse der Pandora/Pandora's Box (G. W. Pabst, 1929) with Louise Brooks. That same year he had his breakthrough with Die weiße Hölle vom Piz Palü/The White Hell of Pitz Palu (Arnold Fanck, G.W. Pabst, 1929) opposite Leni Riefenstahl. It was the first Mountain film, a genre that became very popular in Germany. Diessl was now a huge star with an unusual kind of sex appeal. He was the prototype of the mature, quiet, somewhat difficult man who attracts women almost against his will. Very popular was Die Drei um Edith/Three around Edith (Erich Waschneck, 1929) in which he starred opposite Camilla Horn and Jack Trevor. His first German sound film was the anti-war drama Westfront 1918 (G.W. Pabst, 1930) with Fritz Kampers. In the meantime, Die weiße Hölle vom Piz Palü had made Diessl also famous in the US and he had received an invitation by MGM to come to work in Hollywood.
After making only one American film, Menschen hinter Gittern/Men Behind Bars (Pál Fejös, 1931) – the German language version of The Big House (George W. Hill, 1930), with Heinrich George in Wallace Beery's role, Gustav Diessl returned to Germany. He immediately started working again. Diessl appeared in such early sound films as Hans in allen Gassen/Hans in All Alleys (Carl Froelich, 1930) with Hans Albers, the French Paramount production Les nuits de Port Said/The Nights of Port Said (Leo Mittler, 1932), and the fantasy film Die Herrin von Atlantis/Mistress of Atlantis (G.W. Pabst, 1932), in which he was the only colonial soldier who could resist the temptations of the seductive mistress of the title, played by Brigitte Helm. The adventure film S.O.S. Eisberg/SOS Iceberg (Arnold Fanck, 1933), starring Diessl and Riefenstahl again, and the mountain film Weiße Majestät/White Majesty (August Kern, Anton Kutter, 1933) with Hertha Thiele, tried to continue the success of Die weiße Hölle vom Piz Palü/The White Hell of Piz Palu. During the 1930s, Diessl remained in demand as a sinister villain or difficult-to-cast foreigner. Already in 1931, he had portrayed a demonic Chinese villain in the exotic drama Das gelbe Haus des King-Fu/The Yellow House of King-Fu (Karl Grune, 1931), and he had played a gangster in the highly successful Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse/The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (Fritz Lang, 1933) featuring Rudolf Klein-Rogge. In the Nazi era, he was shown more frequently as a foreigner. First, he appeared in the German-Italian co-production Die Liebe des Maharadscha/The Love of the Maharajah (Arthur Maria Rabenalt, 1936) as an exiled Maharajah, who falls for a piano player (Italian diva Isa Miranda) because she resembles his deceased wife. That same year, Diessl joined the melodrama Der Weg nach Shanghai/Moscow Shanghai (Paul Wegener, 1936) as a Russian captain, who in the revolutionary turmoil fell in love with a beautiful singer (Pola Negri). He again played a Russian in the revolution melodrama Starke Herzen/Strong Hearts (Herbert Maisch, 1937). Then he appeared as an adventurer who falls in love with the wife of a Maharajah (La Jana) in the exotic two-parter, Der Tiger von Eschnapur/The Tiger of Eschnapur (Richard Eichberg, 1938) and Das indische Grabmal/The Indian Tomb (Richard Eichberg, 1938). In 1940, he played a rich Brazilian, again opposite La Jana, in the crime film Stern von Rio/Star of Rio (Karl Anton, 1940).
After his first short-lived marriage with Irmgard Amalie Wettach had ended, Gustav Diessl lived with actress Camilla Horn for a couple of years. In 1937, during the filming of Starke Herzen/Strong Hearts, he met the famous opera singer and actress Maria Cebotari. They fell in love and because of him, Cebatori got divorced. They married in 1938 and stayed together for the rest of his life. During the 1940s, Diessl knew to remain popular, and he played in such films as Komödianten/The Comedians (Georg Wilhelm Pabst, 1941), and the anti-Slovenian Propaganda film Menschen im Sturm/People in the Storm (Fritz Peter Buch, 1941) with Olga Tschechova. Between 1940 and 1944, he worked almost exclusively in Italy. He appeared in such films as Senza cielo/Without Sky (Alfredo Guarini, 1940) with Isa Miranda, La donna del peccato/The Woman of the Sin (Harry Hasso, 1942) with Viveca Lindfors, and Maria Malibran (Guido Brignone, 1943) featuring Cebotari. In 1944 he made again German films such as the Henrik Ibsen adaptation Nora (Harald Braun, 1944) with Luise Ullrich. Diessl’s last film role before the end of the Second World War was that of the Prussian Lieutenant Ferdinand von Schill in Veit Harlan's Kolberg (Veit Harlan, 1944). Diessl appeared in one more film, as a prosecutor in G.W. Pabst's in Austria produced film Der Prozess/The Trial (G.W. Pabst, 1948) about anti-Semitism. Shortly after making this film, Gustav Diessl suddenly had two strokes. Diessl, who was only 49, passed away in his hometown Vienna. Maria Cebotari died only one year later of liver cancer. They had two sons, who were adopted by the pianist Clifford Curzon and his wife Lucille Wallace-Curzon. One of Diessl’s sons lives today in England and the other one in New Zealand. After the death of Diessl, two of his older films finally were shown in the cinemas. Starke Herzen/Strong Heart was already completed in 1937, but it had been banned because it was 'too moderate anti-Communism', and the crime film Ruf an das Gewissen/Call to the Conscience (Karl Anton, 1949) with Karl Ludwig Diehl, which was filmed just before the end of the war and was completed by the DEFA after the war.

Derek Jarman was an English film director, stage designer, artist, and writer.
Jarman's work broke new ground in creating and expanding the fledgling form of 'the pop video' in England, and as a forthright and prominent gay rights activist. Several volumes of his diaries have been published.
Jarman also directed the 1989 tour by the UK duo Pet Shop Boys. By pop concert standards this was a highly theatrical event with costume and specially shot films accompanying the individual songs. Jarman was the stage director of Sylvano Bussotti's opera L'Ispirazione, first staged in Florence in 1998.
He is also remembered for his famous shingle cottage-garden, created in the latter years of his life, in the shadow of the Dungeness power station. The house was built in tarred timber. Raised wooden text on the side of the cottage is the first stanza and the last five lines of the last stanza of John Donne's poem, The Sun Rising. The cottage's beach garden was made using local materials and has been the subject of several books. At this time, Jarman also began painting again (see the book: Evil Queen: The Last Paintings, 1994).
Jarman was the author of several books including his autobiography Dancing Ledge, a collection of poetry A Finger in the Fishes Mouth, two volumes of diaries Modern Nature and Smiling In Slow Motion and two treatises on his work in film and art The Last of England (also published as Kicking the Pricks) and Chroma. Other notable published works include film scripts (Up in the Air, Blue, War Requiem, Caravaggio, Queer Edward II and Wittgenstein: The Terry Eagleton Script/The Derek Jarman Film), a study of his garden at Dungeness Derek Jarman's Garden, and At Your Own Risk, a defiant celebration of gay sexuality.

Lights per second
The project consists on a real-time audiovisual performance in a full immersive designed space. Using special visuals, lighting and sound processing techniques, the installation combines computer codes taking the club architecture, the dance floor, its own environment and the moving crowd.
Lights per second works as a total art concept designed for the public to live an intensive experience, exploring different views, a whole circle through various kinds of perception. From uncomfortable sensations to ecstasy feelings, this journey requires full participation and willingness from the public in order to complete the setting.
Therefore the project is based on different approaches of electronic music and technology, more from an empathic view in a resounding layout experience. An open invitation to think about how electronic music shaped today's culture and so other aspects that define it as part of the so called entertainment industry.
LPS is conceived as an audiovisual set, a techno installation with a custom lighting design, telling about the nature of video as purely consisting of light and shadow. In this lightning speech, the performance takes us to a more abstract level trying to reach the very essence of video technology.
Each component (light, object and shadow) works as a single frame in a circular-shaped lightning-structure that points to an object in the center. The whole installation consists of one hundred RGB-LED light-circumference pointing to a center.
Lights per second concept was born of the deep thinking, research and random essays from Martin Borini (also known as AILAVIU). His early works as a Vj as well as light or stage designer helped him develop this project, which at the same time was enhanced by some of his experimental works with light control through video operation and the study of changes in human perception. On this occasion Martin is doing a live performance with Ducasse, the music project of producer Luis María Ducasse. His sound goes from techno to acid house, playing in a live set hardware format specifically routed for the light installation. Sound concept is around the interaction between light performance and electronic audio devices in order to fuse and conceive the dance floor and the installation as a whole.

Hungarian painter, printmaker, graphic designer and animated film director, is known for his mathematically inspired works, impossible objects, optical illusions, double-meaning images and anamorphoses. The geometric art of István Orosz, with forced perspectives and optical illusions, has been compared to works by M. C. Escher.
Studied at the Hungarian University of Arts and Design (now Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design) in Budapest as pupil of István Balogh and Ernő Rubik. After graduating in 1975 he began to deal with theatre as stage designer and animated film as animator and film director. He is known as painter, printmaker, poster designer, and illustrator as well. He likes to use visual paradox, double meaning images and illusionistic approaches while following traditional printing techniques such as woodcutting and etching. He also tries to renew the technique of anamorphosis. He is a regular participant in the major international biennials of posters and graphic art and his works has been shown in individual and group exhibitions in Hungary and abroad. Film director at the PannóniaFilm Studio in Budapest, Habil. professor at University of West Hungary in Sopron, co-founder of Hungarian Poster Association, member of Alliance Graphique International (AGI) and Hungarian Art Academie. He often uses OYTIΣ, or Utisz, (pronounced: outis) (No one) as artist's pseudonym.
During the last two decades - when most of the works shown here were made – the activities of the poster designer, the printmaker, the illustrator, and the film director have completed each other. Many motive, stylistic features, technical solutions appeared in all of the media and for Orosz it seemingly did not cause any problem to cross the borders of the different genres. When he was drawing a poster usually he did it with the preciseness of illustrators, when he was illustrating a book, he did it with the narrative mood of filmmakers, if he was animating films, sometimes he used the several layers approach of etchers and engravers and for prints he often chose the emblematic simplifying way of depiction of posters. If we call him only a poster designer based on his functional prints, we narrow down his field of activity, we go closer to the truth if we associate him with „postering" as a way of thinking, or if we call his many sided image depicting ourselves and our age as the poster-mirror of István Orosz. István Orosz was known as poster designer in the first part of his career. He made mainly cultural posters for theatres, movies, galleries, museums and publishing houses. At the time of the revolutions of 1989 in Eastern Europe he drew some political posters too. His "Tovarishi Adieu" (also used with text "Tovarishi Koniec" – that means Comrades it is over) appeared in many countries and it was known as symbolic image of changes in the area.
Artists who design anamorphosis (anamorphosis is Greek for "re-transformation") play with perspective to create a distorted image that appears normal only when viewed from the correct angle or with the aid of curved mirrors. The technique was often used by Renaissance-era artists. Orosz tries to renew the technique of anamorphosis and his aim is to develop it as well when he gives a meaning to the distorted image, too. It is not an amorph picture any more, but a meaningful depiction that is independent from the result that appears in the mirror or viewed from a special point of view. This approach of anamorphoses is suitable for expressing more sophisticated messages.

“Derek Jarman was drawn to Dungeness by its desolate character; he used it as the setting for his film The Last of England, an allegory on the social and sexual inequalities in England under Thatcherism. Later that year he was diagnosed as HIV positive, and while his public life became increasingly dedicated to gay rights issues, he devoted his private life to the creation of a garden at Prospect Cottage, a fisherman’s house on a huge bank of shingle on the Kent coast.
Jarman was a relatively inexperienced gardener, and given the inhospitable conditions at Dungeness he initially had little hope of establishing a garden. But he succeeded with the help of friends, especially the photographer Howard Sooley, using local plants and gathering flints and stones to form large circular beds and standing stones, or ‘dragon’s teeth’. He also collected old fishing tackle, shells, broken garden tools, driftwood and pieces of twisted metal from old sea defences, using them as plant supports and garden sculptures. The front garden was more formal, the back garden more experimental, although there are no fences of walls anywhere.
Jarman’s garden featured in his 1989 film War Requiem, and in the following year was the focal point of The Garden, ‘a parable about the cruel and unnecessary perversion of innocence’ where it figured both as the Garden of Eden and the garden at Gethsemane.”

Tower of London Remembers.
To mark the centenary anniversary of the First World War the Tower of London is creating an evolving art installation "Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red". Formed of 888,246 ceramic poppies by artist Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper, each poppy represents a British military fatality during the war. The installation was officially unveiled on 5 August 2014, one hundred years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War and will be in place until 11 November 2014.
On 24 August I helped to build a just a little more of the installation by constructing and planting a batch of poppies. I believe it is now (as in these photos) about a quarter completed. Each poppy is a life lost - when it is completed maybe it will help to demonstrate the scale of those numbers which we really cannot imagine.

Küçüksu Palace is a palace situated in Küçüksu neighbourhood of Beykoz district, at the Asian shore of Bosphorus between Anadoluhisarı and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge today. The tiny palace was used by Ottoman sultans for short stays during country excursions and hunting.
The palace was commissioned by Sultan Abd-ul-Mejid (1823-1861), and designed and constructed by the Armenian-Turkish architects Garabet Amira Balyan and his son Nigoğayos Balyan in baroque style. A two storey timber palace on the waterfront here, built during the reign of Mahmud I (1696- 1754), by his Grand Vizier Divittar Mehmed Pasha and continued to be used by Selim III (1761-1808) and Mahmud II (1785-1839), gave place to the new palace, which was completed in 1857.
The building consists of two main stories and a basement on a ground area of 15 x 27 m. Unlike other palace gardens with high walls; its garden is surrounded by cast iron railings with one gate at each of the four side. The basement was provided for kitchen, larder and quarters for servants. The above floors reflect the design of a traditional Turkish house so that four rooms in the corners surround a hall in the middle. The rooms at the waterfront have two fireplaces while other rooms having only one. The fireplaces were made out of colorful marble brought from Italy. The rooms have crystal chandeliers from Bohemia. The curtains, the coatings of the furniture and the fine carpets were woven in Hereke. The halls and the rooms exhibit valuable paintings and arts objects. Sechan, stage designer at Vienna State Opera, was charged for the decoration of the interior.
During the reign of Sultan Abd-ul-Aziz (1830-1876), more elaborate decoration was added to the façade. Some of the original additional buildings in the garden of the palace were demolished since then. In the beginning of the Republican era, the site was used as a state guesthouse for some years. After a thoroughly restoration in 1944, Küçüksu Palace is open to the public as a museum today.
