My beautiful flaming pink peony with bright yellow centre bloomed all last week giving us an amazing splash of color in the garden. Alas, the petals have fallen and it is time for the “three sisters” to take centre stage as they pose regally in the new light.
Capturing images of Least Bitterns in flight can be tricky because their impetus and direction of launch is often unpredictable. An exception is during the three-to-four-week period when their hatchlings are on or near the nest, before they have fledged, when they are completely dependent on the parents for food. Then, both parents will follow a cautious but predictable pattern and a flight path that can be anticipated when conditions are right. The adult birds will venture fairly far from the nest area to gather baitfish, which they hold in their gullet prior to feeding the young. On their return, they first perch within sight of the nest and scope the area for any sign of predators (stage one). Once satisfied that the way is clear, they make a bee-line to a spot a few yards from the nest where they blend into to reeds (stage two). Finally, they make their way to the waiting hatchlings and regurgitate the food into their yawning beaks (stage three).
If I am lucky enough to find a nest in a conducive location, I can sit quietly in my kayak close enough to be within feet of the stage two flight path but far enough from the nest to avoid stressing the birds. In this case, luck was with me on Horsepen Bayou.
As she looked among her audience she suddenly forgot everything she rehearsed for so many months. Frozen and contemplating the death of her career the sweat dripped visibly from her brow.

Autumn/Sunday Morning
Brilliant start to a wonderful Sunday yesterday! Right now the sun is in the perfect direction to rise just through these trees...love this time of the year!

A thoughtful local resident has grown sunflowers outside their fence. I left Ray finishing his coffee outside Margo's Café and walked over to take a few shots.
A strong breeze came up as I reached the sunflowers but amazingly, this new little camera got all shots, except one, in focus.
No idea what type of dragonfly this is, since I normally photograph birds, but couldn't resist snapping a shot of him nonetheless as he hung on during a stiff breeze...
When I looked at this shot it reminded me of a stage set for a musical, or for a modern production of an opera. The guys look more ready to burst into song than to get back to work!
On another day, on the same trip, on the inside of the big curve at Racey East, Quebec, we get a set of three Canadian Pacific "bigs" and a "medium"(M), providing the symphony of MLW song for the local farmers. What a sight it is as the run nearly 180 degrees around me! Just like a gigantic arched stage in the fields!
