St. Patrick's Cathedral is a decorated Catholic cathedral in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. It is the seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York as well as a parish church. The cathedral occupies a city block bounded by Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue, 50th Street, and 51st Street, directly across from Rockefeller Center. Designed by James Renwick Jr., it is the largest Gothic Revival Catholic cathedral in North America.

The cathedral was constructed starting in 1858 to accommodate the growing Archdiocese of New York and to replace St. Patrick's Old Cathedral. Work was halted in the early 1860s during the American Civil War; the cathedral was completed in 1878 and dedicated on May 25, 1879.

St. Petri in Lübeck, first mentioned in 1170, is the cultural and university church of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. After several reconstructions, St. Petri was given its current architectural form as a five-aisled Gothic hall church in the 15th century and has been a Protestant church since the Reformation in Lübeck in 1530.

In March 1942, the church was badly damaged by a British bombing raid and burned down completely. After restoration, St. Petri was only reopened as a church for the whole city in 1987 and is now a place for art and culture, for science and discussion. During Advent, an arts and crafts Christmas market is held in St. Petri. From the tower of the church you have an overview of the whole of Lübeck's old town.

Perfect morning to photograph something crossing what I think of as the Mickey Mouse lift bridge over the St. Croix River in Prescott, Wisconsin. BNSF 5863 leads mixed freight over the bridge at the confluence of the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers along the former CB&Q. Another spot I have not shot in many years, mostly because I swing through here later in the day when the sun swings to the west. I think of Prescott as a morning photo spot.

The current Romanesque and Gothic form of the cathedral, seen today in the Stephansplatz, was largely initiated by Duke Rudolf IV (1339–1365) and stands on the ruins of two earlier churches, the first a parish church consecrated in 1147. The most important religious building in Vienna, St. Stephen's Cathedral, has witnessed many important events in Habsburg and Austrian history and has become one of the city's most recognizable symbols with its multi-colored tile roof. It has 256 stairs from the top to the bottom

November 2024, statt.

St Davids South Wales april 2023

Before 1188, parts of a Romanesque brick basilica were built on the site of the current church, which were incorporated into the new building of St. Stephan.

The church was also damaged in a major fire in the town in 1617. The top of the north tower collapsed and only received its current baroque dome in 1714. At 87.5 m high, the north tower is the highest church tower in the entire Altmark.

Of particular importance is the organ built in 1623/1624, at the turn of the Renaissance to the early Baroque period, by the most important organ builder of the time, Hans Scherer the Younger (Hamburg). It represents a high point of Renaissance organ building, which Tangermünde, as a member of the Hanseatic League, could afford at the time.

The organ was extensively restored from 1991 to 1994. The presumed original sound could be reconstructed because 50% of the original pipes were still there.

Ovingham, Northumberland

Ovingham's parish church of St Mary dates to the Saxon period, with major rebuilding in the 13th century and again in the Victorian period.

St Mary's church was the site of historic drama in 1534, Henry VIII's church commissioners, sent to dissolve Hexham Abbey were challenged from the top of the church tower by the abbot, dressed in armour. The abbot was hanged for his impudence, ostensibly for wearing armour, which was forbidden to a cleric.

Now ruins just a thought to how majestic the cathedral would have looked like in it's best days, long ago.

I composed this photograph during an early morning walk in downtown St. George, Utah. It is of a temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

After the death of Joseph Smith, whom they considered to be a prophet, Mormon pioneers migrated west. They were later directed by his successor, Brigham Young, to settle in southwestern Utah, where this temple was completed in March 1877.

The temple was built over swampy land. Workers created a dry foundation by using a cannon (with a debated origin), which they lifted thirty feet to use as a pile driver for compacting the foundation. For more than six years, members willingly contributed to the temple, which included daily travel to the work site, and dedicating one day out of ten as a form of tithing labor.

Brigham Young, the church president, considered the completed cupola too short. Two years after he died, a lightning strike razed the tower, and the reconstructed height of the tower was doubled to his desired height. It is the oldest temple in active use by the church.
