Forest Sprite - Poem by Linda Ori

There was a little fairy

Sat beneath a tree -

Humming to her tiny self

A haunting melody;

Just a little tinkle

Was all that I could hear

Floating on the evening breeze

High and crystal clear;

Surrounded by a rainbow,

Sparkles lit the air -

Tiny wings did flutter

Sprinkling gold dust in her hair;

A tiny little forest sprite

Had slipped the bonds of space,

Perhaps a mere imagined thought

Had brought her to this place;

How sweet the sound she echoed

Within this forest spot -

Though I had never seen a sprite

Her image now I caught;

This tiny little fairy

Sat beneath a tree -

Humming to her tiny self

A haunting melody.

Red sprites from last night near the tri-border point of Hungary, Romania and Ukraine. Photographed from a distance of about 250 km in northwest direction.

The sprite occurred over an elongated line of thunderstorms and thus not over a traditional "pancake" MCS.

Due to light pollution, I was forced to work with low ISO and short shutter speeds: ISO 1600 and 1.6".

One more from the night of Jun. 25, 2022. Red sprites over the thunderstorms of central and northern Aegean Sea. These happened within less than half a second and in 3 separate groups. They appear as if they are "dancing" in the sky, thus called "dancing sprites" among sprite-chasers. TLEs (like red sprites) appear, under specific circumstances, above thunderstorms. Dark patches are clouds. I've used a Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 51.2k iso. During the night on the 27th of Oct. 2025, 102 TLEs* were observed over #thunderstorms at NE. Aegean Sea, close to Lesvos isl. and NW Turkey. This is a so called "Jellyfish" red sprite event (a term used by sprite-chasers). That is, a group of "carrot" sprites stacked together, creating a red "dome" on top and a "forest" of tendrils at the bottom. My spot was at E. Attica, looking towards Evia's isl. mountains and NE Aegean Sea.

*TLEs (like red sprites) are upper atmospheric electrical discharges (cold plasma to be precise) and they appear, under specific circumstances, above thunderstorms (e.g. red sprites appear at altitudes of 40-90 km).

For this one, I've used a #Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 40 k iso.

If I were to pick a favorite damsel it would have to be a Sprite. A challenge to try to photograph but wonderful to watch. I wish I could spend all day with the Sprites!

During the early morning on the 21st of Dec. 2024, several dozens of TLEs* were observed over thunderstorms at the Aegean Sea (northern as well as southeastern). This is a halo event (the faint red disk on top) with red sprites under it. One of the last events I managed to capture as the imminent sunrise was shedding light. The lights on the bottom left come from the islands of Andros, Tinos and Mykonos.

Found this one at an antique car show in town a few months ago. I guess the owner thought it would be nice to give it some character :)

Eastern reek, New South Wales, Australia.

This is the second largest Sprite I've captured during the session of Nov. 10-11, 2025 over #thunderstorms at E. Aegean Sea and Lesvos isl. specifically. One can observe the halo on top while the conical shape on the upper part of the sprites makes this capture "special". The light below the sprite comes from the parent lightning.

"A sprite is a spirit, a mythical, fairy-like creature who lives by the water. Sprites are supernatural and sometimes tricksy. Sprites are particularly common Western European folk tales, and one of the most famous literary sprites is Ariel from Shakespeare's The Tempest." -Google definition search

It's rare to have a sprite and a well-shaped halo (red disk next to the sprite) in such a distance (they were possibly triggered by separate electrical discharges), on Feb. 12-13, 2024, over thunderstorms at the Aegean Sea. Halos occur due to the same mechanism responsible for sprites, appear higher than them, at 70–85 km, last for some ms, and look like faint red disks with a typical diameter of less than 100 km. Also, observe the lower right tendrils of the sprite and their deviation towards the right, following the strong temporary electric field above the thundercloud.

An image that has eluded me for years was finally captured last night. Just West of Leoti, Kansas distant severe thunderstorms rage across the plains. I positioned myself about 80 miles West of the storms in clear skies where I captured this image of rare "sprites"! Sprites are large-scale electrical discharges that occur high above thunderstorm clouds, or cumulonimbus, giving rise to a quite varied range of visual shapes flickering in the night sky. They are usually triggered by the discharges of positive lightning between an underlying thundercloud and the ground.

During the 1930s, Riley enjoyed a great deal of competition success that often influenced development of its production cars. This beautiful 1931 Riley Sprite Special perfectly evokes those halcyon days for the marque.

WD 2976 has been fitted with a 2443 cc engine from a Riley 16hp. It was seen at the Classic Motor Hub with a price tag of £79,500.

'Sand Sprites'

Didnt get the image I was hoping for, so I slowly crept along the shoreline watching the sand and the sea meet, leaving these beautiful almost sprite looking figures. The more I look, it begins to appear like a old forgotten alphabet.

The paint scheme really does look like an Austin Healey 3000's. Certainly most, if not all of the Sprites I remember were one solid color, but I'm at the point where I can't trust my memory all that much. I once seriously considered buying one of these, but my 6'3" frame didn't seem to be all that compatible with how small they are. I ended up buying an MG A which wasn't much bigger.
