Time Scan Lineair panoramic image of a Sprinter at Amsterdam Central Station

2-car Sprinter unit 150 149 is seen under the roof of Liverpool Lime Street station. Carrying Northern Rail colours, most of the original members of the British Rail Sprinter series of DMUs (Classes 150/0 and 150/1) are now gathered under the Northern Rail flag. Having entered service in 1985/86, their replacement by newer rolling stock must be imminent.

The Cummins-powered Sprinters have undoubtedly provided successful in service, and unlike the Pacers of the same era, they did not require major re-engineering. But the Class 150s have not been the best in terms of passenger comfort - with British Rail being begrudged adequate investment funds by the cheese-paring Thatcher government, the Class 150s were strictly a no-frills design.

The survivor sprinted down the street, his trench coat flapping behind him. He was running away from something terrible...

The working is the 1M67 1341 Hereford to Birmingham New Street West Midlands Trains service

Class 153 single units are currently working some services to Hereford, normally in pairs or attached to Class 170 units to make up a 4-car set

Given that there is precious little else to photograph on this line the 153's at least make a bit of interest. Time will tell as to how long they will continue working.

The pop-ups are controlled by a little knob you turn on the dashboard. One knob for up-down and one knob for the electrics.

One of the original SORT vans. Wa slater replaced as it wasn't big enough for all the kit, but is now back in service again as there are now more vans in the teams to transport everything that is needed.

Centre console is kinda plain but it has a bunch of lights and that fake shifter to play with.

An Arriva Trains Wales Sprinter DMU, 150217, on the Manchester Piccadilly to Milford Haven service, passes through the wonderful rural setting of Pontrilas in south Herefordshire, half a mile from the border with Wales. There used to be a railway station here which closed in 1958 and is now a B + B.

The charming little signal box at Pontrilas has been in operation for 134 years dating back to 1880. It is a McKenzie and Holland design which had 42 lever frames in 1910 but now only has 14 operating levers. Nevertheless, it is an important signal box that controls frequent passenger traffic passing along the Welsh Marches Line and controls an important northbound loop, which acts as a relief line for freight traffic.

The 22-mile Sprinter service is operated by North County Transit District, linking Oceanside with Escondido, via 13 intermediate stations. The service is characterised as hybrid rail, combining the characteristics of light- and commuter rail. Opening in 2008, the Sprinter rolling stock comprises 12 Siemens VT642 Desiro DMUs. This unit carrying an unsightly advertising wrap is seen arriving at the Escondido Transit Center at the southern terminus of the line.

A relatively warm day incited some inpromptu sprints by this doe.

This is a shot I took earlier this year - May 2013. It's in Manchester City Centre. Christophe Lemaitre is leaping out of the blocks. Dwain Chambers is getting ready; preparing himself before getting down into the blocks.

I'm posting this up to kind of remind myself to go again next year, and so that I can think about what lens to use next year, and what kind of shots I want to try. This is quite a crop from a 24mm lens, on a DX camera. I might go for 50mm next year, and get a bit closer in.

I really enjoyed watching the sprinters warming up. They look so calm and serene when they run. I blogged about my experience earlier this year:

The raised track gets you really close and low. It's a great angle to work with.

The light is not so good though. The race is through the streets, with large buildings blocking the sun on either side.
