My buddy Chris and his parents brought me along to this Spring training exhibition at Cashman Field. Before Interleague play rendered such a matchup dull, Seeing the Chi-Sox take on the Cubbies was quite an event. Frank Thomas was my favorite player at the time. Big League Weekend remains a popular event each Spring, and allows transplanted Second City-ers to watch their Beloved Squads.
The GFA Softball and Baseball team joined a handful of other Dragons athletic programs, taking part in spring training over the second half of our two-week break.
Astros righthander Jerome Williams was pleased with his progress Wednesday after giving up six hits and four unearned runs over 3 2/3 innings against the Nationals.
“I felt good,” he said. “I worked on a lot of stuff today. I threw a lot of curveballs today. This is daily work for me.”
Williams was betrayed by a pair of errors at short by Jonathan Villar leading off innings, but afterward he was more focused on the progress and the work he put in. He threw 42 of his 66 pitches for strikes.
“It felt real good to get it in,” he said. “Just getting the repetitions and getting in a lot of pitches under my belt to get ready for the season. I used everything today and am trying to perfect every pitch.”
