Merkmale der Flügelunterseite
Tarnung: Im geschlossenen Zustand dient die braune, gemusterte Flügelunterseite mit den Augenflecken als effektive Tarnung, die den Falter vor Fressfeinden wie Vögeln und Insekten schützt, indem sie die Umrisse des Schmetterlings verschwimmen lässt.
Augenflecken: Die großen, runden Augenflecken ähneln den Augen eines größeren Tieres, wie beispielsweise einer Eule (Gattung Caligo ist für ihre "Eulenaugen" bekannt), und sollen Fressfeinde abschrecken oder verwirren.
Kontrast zur Oberseite: Die berühmte, schillernde, metallisch blaue Farbe der Oberseite entsteht nicht durch Pigmente, sondern durch die Beugung des Lichts an mikroskopisch kleinen Schuppen. Dieser starke Kontrast zwischen der leuchtenden Oberseite und der tarnenden Unterseite ist charakteristisch für die Gattung Morpho.
Lebensraum und Nahrung
Diese Schmetterlinge sind in Mittel- und Südamerika beheimatet und leben bevorzugt in offenen, lichten Stellen tropischer Wälder oder in der Nähe von Flüssen.
Erwachsene Falter saugen Nektar aus Blüten, ernähren sich aber auch von überreifem oder vergorenem Obst. Sie saugen auch Mineralsalze vom Boden oder von der Haut (wie auf dem Bild zu sehen) auf.
