These Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) flowers dotted up through the leaf litter at the Springfield Nature Center. They look so bright against all the fall leaves.
The large fleshy root emits a red sap that was used as a dye. The plant was used by Native Americans to treat hemorrhages, rheumatism, fevers, poor digestion, colds, and coughs. Today it is used as a plaque-inhibiting agent in toothpaste and moughwashes.
What a great weekend it was. Temperatures in the double digits, sunshine and I found this nice spot with thousands of blooming crocuses. Bringing all the gear (including the 100-400 mm) was a good choice. Small DOF and a soft bokeh... I'm happy and hope you'll...
Enjoy!

It's like Wow, all at once within one week Springtime exploded. It's been hard to keep up and be in five places at once to see all that has gone on. It sure is pretty though and i am definitely in my element...camera in hand. I sometimes think that i should make up a T-shirt with a decent photo of myself and a slogan that says.....Photography is my nature...which is exactly how i feel about photography !

Tough on the California wildflowers this year - no rain, lots of dry winds, then inches of rain followed by unseasonably warm temps with some nice dry wind again ... but with some help from my garden hose, some have made it big time. You gotta look at this large to see all the spilled pollen and this bee just rolling in it.
With the warm temperatures that we currently have, and some birds starting to sing again, I remembered this year‘s spring, when I found this Eurasian Tree Sparrow on a still leafless scrub in front of the first green of spring. This year, tree sparrows are struggling significantly in Germany, with a collapse of populations in many areas in the Northwest. The reason is not yet understood, but several adult birds have been found dead sitting on their eggs, so it definitely is more than the usual decline due to habitat loss. I hope you all enjoy this picture and find it as motivation to help tree sparrows and other small birds by letting meadows grow longer, allowing flowering plants to grow and produce seeds and by not using herbicides and pesticides in your garden and around your house.
A few spring flowers are starting to bloom again in "my" meadow. It's a strange feeling, because the whole thing is dying, drying up, heading towards the inevitable fall, but these few flowers are screaming that they prefer spring, despite the coming winter.

This Robin is prepping her nest for when the babies to arrive.
Much work goes into this springtime renovation as she gathers grassy vines, sticks and as you can see here in her new nest, mud on her beak which also helps to strengthen the base.
