Warrior Country holds its annual Spring Festival on Camp Red Cloud's Village Green parade field in Uijeongbu April 3. The event, which featured live music - instrumental and vocals - by the 2nd Infantry Division Band, drew hundreds of Soldiers, Airmen, civilians and family members, including youngsters who enjoyed Easter egg hunts, a bouncy house, face painting and other entertainment. Hamburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst and other food was served free. The Festival was hosted by the U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I Chaplain Office, in partnership with the USO, Red Cross, Area I family readiness groups, and the 2nd Infantry Division's Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion. Despite cloudy skies early in the day and heavy thunderstorms the night before, the weather had cleared in time for the Festival's scheduled 3 p.m. start, and it went forward under sunny skies. — U.S. Army photos by Staff Sgt. In this photo of construction of the displays for Chinese Spring Festival going on, you can notice trash on the ground. Yes, as Barack Obama and his team keep reminding us, there is work to do. But also, you can see in this photo, there is light on the path now.
This is from Barack Obama's beautiful book “The Audacity of Hope” - a passage a read just this morning. I think it explains not only his magnetism but also the tremendous connection and hope he is inspiring - across all borders:
“I think as a country we are suffering from an empathy deficit.... I believe a stronger sense of empathy would tilt the balance of our current policies in favor of those people who are struggling in this society. After all, if they are like us, then their struggles are our own. If we fail to help, we diminish ourselves.
But that does not mean that those who are struggling - or those of us who claim to speak for those who are struggling - are thereby freed from trying to understand the perspectives of those who are better off. Black leaders need to understand the legitimate fears that may cause some whites to resist affirmative action. Union representatives can’t afford not to understand the competitive pressures their employers may be under. I am obligated to see the world through George Bush’s eyes, no matter how much I may disagree with him. That's what empathy does - it calls us all to task, the conservative and the liberal, the powerful and the powerless, the oppressed and the oppressor. We are all shaken out of our complacency. We are all forced beyond our limited vision.”
