Sunshine and temps in the upper 30s / low 40s enticed my ladies out onto the porch this afternoon ... in shorts, barefoot, and dreaming of spring.
Finally a beautiful day and a day off! I took a little time away from the chores (of which I got little done) and went outside to take some springtime pictures. I had to avoid the grass since it was incredibly muddy. I sat on one of my flower beds and took some pics. My hot neighbor came out and caught me. I guess I can't shock him since I once went over with a dress half on and asked him to zip me up. LOL!!! That's what happens when you live alone! I was late for a gig and had no wire hangers to try it myself! Who cares. I ran into him on my way home. He offered to unzip it. ;) I was so tired I said no - I had it pre-unzipped as i left the gig. He even asked if he could help me carry anything in even though I had nothing in my hands and had already locked the car. Later I realized he may have been flirting. I have no game...

1. This week’s photos were shot in a photojournalistic mode. I chose to take this photo in a horizontal position to connote tranquility and peace despite the fact that it was cold outside. I shot this scene at many angles capturing the whole person working in her flower bed and at a vertical composition. This is the image I was most pleased with. I believe her elderly hand and the blue flowers are the dominant subject which is what I wanted to capture. Kay bent down to carefully clean around the blue flowers and gently encourages them to awaken. I like the contrast of her elderly hand against the new budding spring flowers. It reminds me of a tender, nurturing moment a grandma would have with her little granddaughter. I also think your eye then follows the line up her red sleeve and eventually ends on her crocks which is a staple item for her when working outside.
2. I really wanted to focus on the color of the blue flowers, so I think my small F stop played nicely with the depth of field for this photo to help capture the brilliant blue color. I think her red sweatshirt gives an unexpected added color to the photo that I didn’t notice until my picture was downloaded on my computer. I think the texture of the curved rock displays nicely against the leaves, greenery and dirt.
3. This photo was taken during the golden hours of sunset. Despite the cloudy day, I believe I was still able to capture a sharp photo overall and create a soft glow on her hand. The lighting reflects gently off the blue flowers showing off a nice contrast from the green leaves and her hand. I really do like taking photos on cloudy days!
4. I really did not have any major technical difficulties with this photo. I would have liked a tad sharper focus on the blue flowers, if I had to do it over. My white balance was set for cloudy. The ISO was at 400 and shutter speed was at 1/200 and my F stop was at 3.5. This allowed for a smaller depth of field because I wanted to zero in on her hand while she was working on the flower bed. I did have technical troubles with my daughter and dog photo because of the lighting. I made several adjustments with the shutter speed and F stop, but struggled with capturing a crisper and sharper photo. I could have added light, but it would have awoken them.
5. A picture says a thousand words. That is what photojournalists strive to emulate. My snowbird in-laws recently came home from being in Arizona over the winter months. I knew the odds were high that if I stopped by to visit, they would be outside working on their vehicles and the flower beds. It was a great opportunity to catch them in action. Kay’s passion is her flower garden, and Don’s passion is working on vehicles. It was fun to capture what they both truly love to do. This is a normal day for them to be outside working. I certainly could not have staged the sleeping dog/daughter combo. I was studying at the kitchen table, and my husband sent me a text to bring the camera into the family room very quietly. Photojournalism can be a very fun hobby, but I think it takes practice and many hours of familiarizing yourself with your camera. You really have to know your settings to work with your lighting to take a photojournalistic picture on the drop of a dime!
