The following picture was taken on March 26 at the DuPage River trail along Whalon Lake in Bolingbrook, Illinois. In the scenery, there is a concrete pipe opening located along a biking trail which emits a dangerous discharge, which the surrounding soil appears to be silty and the grass is yellowish and dried out. The sign is not specific to what the it is, but the discharge is a source of air pollution as it warns to be at least 10 feet away. The trail is popular for runners and bike riders, so the potential harm here is that the discharge can hurt humans that pass by. Waste discharges can affect the chemical makeup of the surrounding atmosphere damaging the ecosystem and lake, since it is an open system. The soil culture and wildlife are prone to damage since the discharge can interfere with the carbon and nitrogen cycles. The other danger is that the water quality can deteriorate if the discharge had reached the lake. According to the Forest Preserve District of Will County, the lake includes bass, catfish, sunfish, walleye, and if the water is contaminated it could disrupt the pH, and temperature of the lake which can kill the fish. A proposed solution to the pipe opening would be to filter the immediate environment. This can be done by first identifying what the discharge is and then setting up a peripheral filtration system to minimize the spread. Alternatively, we can make the pipe opening a closed system by physically covering the ventilation if safe enough, or even extract the source of the discharge and either attempt to chemically purify it or isolate a closed system of the substance from Whalon Lake. Whalon Lake is a preservation, so waste is kept to a minimum. A potential solution to the discharge would be to isolate the system or attempt some form of purification.
