I know it’s a very old fashioned flower, but I love lilac. Then again, I am somewhat of an old fashioned person, and certainly an old soul, so perhaps it suits me. I love lilacs for their delicate blooms, sweet scent and of course their delightful shades of purple. They are a true harbinger of spring.

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 26th of May is "shades of purple", and I was immediately put in mind of the lovely lilacs I saw in some of the old fashioned cottage gardens that I sometimes see on my walks. Whilst it is autumn where I live now, I just happen to have a photograph of a beautiful lilac bearing several shades of purple in my photo archive, taken on a lovely spring stroll I took in October last year. Captured against a wonderfully clear azure sky, I thought it most suitable. I hope you like my choice for the theme and that it makes you smile!

Syringa is a genus of twelve currently recognized species of flowering woody plants in the olive family or Oleaceae called lilacs. These lilacs are native to woodland and scrub from south eastern Europe to eastern Asia, and widely and commonly cultivated in temperate areas elsewhere.

So yesterday was the first day of spring and I post a wintery scene....nice job Kevin. Here is a photo a little more spring like. Hopefully spring is here to stay....might reach 50 degrees today.

Spring time in the Sierra Foothills. I took this image last year. Hopefully the wildflower bloom will be as good this year.

Each time the northern lights shine in our spring night sky, I think it might be the last of the season, because the night is no longer very dark. I had to darken and vignette this photo to showcase the cosmic display.

With only minutes of daylight left we spot the first Crocus flower of the year in bloom (in my garden). This flower let’s me know that spring is right around the corner.

Very pretty flowers in the spring sunshine at the Briggs Nursery in North Attleboro, Massachusetts.

In a spring fever I headed off to a local camera store to lift the spirits after all the recent snow and rain and generally dreary weather. A few dollars later I emerged triumphant clasping a Tamron AF 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD...no trip to the doctor required.

Tested this out around town today and it's so much sharper than the 18-135mm kit lens that I bought with my D80 several years ago.

Here's Mr & Mrs Cardinal on my deck sharing their dinner. It's true love. I know they've been together for 7 years at least. They are so sweet.

If you like the techie stuff I shot this at the maximum focal length of 270mm at an aperture of f/6.3. Not quite with the sun directly in front of me but pretty close, so the exposure was adjusted down -1.3. I'd expect the sharpness to fall off a little at the maximum focal length but I was pleased with what I got at 200 ISO and with the camera set on aperture priority / matrix metering. Next time I'll shoot on shutter priority as these birds move around quickly.

“When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest. The only thing that could spoil a day was people and if you could keep from making engagements, each day had no limits. People were always the limiters of happiness except for the very few that were as good as spring itself.”

Saturday Self Challenge

In this challenge, photograph signs of Spring for those living in the Northern hemisphere, and for members who live in the southern hemisphere, Autumn.

Spring, sunny skies and flowers appearing everywhere along the South West Coast Path. The gorse is in bloom and everything is turning green and lush again. Only a chill wind blowing off the sea reminds you that it is spring and not summer, not the sort of day to be heading off out without some warm clothing.

Thank you for your visit and your comments, they are greatly appreciated.

For me, Photographic Impressionism explores the playful, poetic possibilities of light stirred up with my emotional response to color, line, and pattern, yet can easily become just another belt-notched technique if I fail to explore the metaphors outside the forest.
