spotless crake (Zapornia tabuensis), juvenile

The little hopping crake, whose leg has been maimed,

Pushes with the good leg, hops on the mud it would make.

Other crakes chase it away, but hopping it would come again.

Its spirit’s not easily broken – hats off to our hopping crake!

Sunspots are temporary spots on the Sun's surface that are darker than the surrounding area. Their number varies according to the approximately 11-year solar cycle. In 2020, near minimum activity, a perfectly spotless sun could be observed (left pic). This year (2025), near maximum activity, sunspots are a frequent occurrence (right pic).

The limb darkening of the sun disk is well visible in these images.

This service is a relatively recent addition to the Scottish rail freight scene. When it started in November 2020 it was initially thought to be a short-term flow, however we're now 6 months in and it has yet to miss a week so I think it would be fair to assume it's a longer term thing.

The service runs once a week using the loco and wagons from the Inverness Tesco service, though it was slightly different this week as 66432 replaced 37716 which worked Yesterdays Inverness service at short notice following the failure of 68017.

While it was nice to get a clean loco in sunny conditions, the thing that makes this shot for me is cloud formations - much better than a solid blue or grey sky.

Another image from my garden last summer but I am noticing ladybugs appearing indoors in some places already. They are waking up! This one had no spots which is unusual to see. You can just barely see the small mass of aphids on the plant stem. This ladybug had a feast and my plant survived the infestation of aphids.

As rain starts to fall, KCS 2906 and sister 2900 departs Denton for Wylie yard after switching several customers in town.

This unit had no dirt on it and was likely repainted in the last several weeks at the shops in Shreveport. With the CP/KCS merger looming later this year, I wonder if this will be the last KCS unit repainted?

Not a brilliant photograph, but happy to find this Spotless Crake (Porzana tabuensis) in the Providence Dam at Woodlands Historic Park. It is a lifer for me, and the 102nd bird species I have photographed in Woodlands.

An clean Albany & Eastern B40-8 hauls empty center beams to the huge Weyerhaeuser plant a few miles outside of Lebanon, Oregon. It's pretty amazing the excellent condition of every unit on the roster.
