The stadium has a gross volume of three million cubic metres and is considered to be the world's largest enclosed space. It is also the world's largest steel structure with 26km of unwrapped steel used. The innovative structure was designed by Herzog & De Meuron Architekten, Arup Sport and the China Architecture Design and Research Group, and has been nicknamed the "bird's nest" due to the web of twisting steel sections that form the roof.

Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 3rd June 2023.

About the photograph.

When I was preparing the photos for uploading to Flickr, sometimes I would pick one, or two, or in rare cases three, photos for uploading. Then I would start writing an article about the subject. (Note: Flickr calls this “description” but I like to think of my written words as articles instead of descriptions.)

I picked those two, the white car (0358) and the red car (0377), and thought of giving them the titles of “The White One” and “The Red One”

But when I was doing research on who the drivers were, what are the cars they drive, by looking up in the programme guide I bought on that day, I noticed by chance, the drivers happen to have the same first name.

So I figure to call this set as The Two Simons. And give each a subtitle based on the colour of their cars.

The Two Simons: Red.

In the above photo, file 0377.

This is Simon Dudfield from Hartpury, a civil parish in Gloucestershire. Here, he is racing in his Lotus Elise, bearing the number 209.

Note the vehicle registration plate (AKA the number plate) on the front, that says NK51 LWT. The first two letters NK imply it was registered in Newcastle, England. The number 51 refer to the year it was registered, which was between September 2001 to February 2002.

About Shelsley Walsh.

Shelsley Walsh is a motorsports speed hill climb track in Worcestershire, and organised by the Midland Automobile Club (MAC).

It is one of the oldest motorsports event, having started in 1905, and held events every year, except for the two World Wars.

It is also a notably steep course by today’s hill climb standards, rising 328ft / 100m over its 1000 yards / 914 metres length.

The track and course do not belong to MAC, it is leased from the local landowner. The original lease ran for 99 years, and in 2005, a new lease was signed for the next 99 years.

Around Brynllwyd Glamping, near Pontarfynach, approximately 15 miles east of Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, Wales (Cymru), United Kingdom, on Saturday 2nd September 2023.

About the photograph.

Rali Ceredigion was the first actual rallying motorsport event I attended.

I’m really more of a Formula 1 fan, and keep up with the F1 news, even attended my first real live F1 race in 2019. I do like rally motorsports too, but hardly really keep up with the news and details.

Having lived my life with self-doubt because of the negativity I get from family, teachers, social workers, over my choice of career (I wanted to be a working photographer) due to myself being a deaf person with speech impaired, I now want to believe in myself, and break out of the negativity.

That’s why I am aiming to get to do non-paid freelance work, for myself, as a way of building up experience, and building up a portfolio, as my aim is to plan ahead and hope to set up my own business.

So, I’ve been doing some photojournalism of Pride parades, doing basketball photography, and even booked models for fashion photos.

Then I thought to see how I feel about motorsports photography, and thought about looking for a rallying event. In part, to see it and enjoy it for myself, and in part, to have a go doing rally photography.

I found out about Rali Ceredigion that was to take place not very far from Aberystwyth, which is where my closer friend was born. I figured to invite my best friend to come with me, because it would give my friend a chance to see their family too.

So we went there for the weekend, and I bought tickets for both of us to attend the event.

The photo shows my attempts to get to do rally photography. I think I have a long way to go, still got to get the right shutter speed, correct aperture, correct ISO setting, and all that stuff. I’m familiar with what techniques to use, but haven’t actually done photos of the rally event, so I lack the experience needed.

Who knows? Maybe next time I may decide to go to another rallying event, and try to improvise.

I didn’t get a programme guide, and I struggle to find the details of that event, so I don’t really know who the driver was.

The car in the photo, appears to be a second generation Ford Escort, usually referred as the Ford Escort Mark II. They were in production between December 1974 to August 1980. By the look of it, this model is a 2 door saloon.

They are typically rear wheel drive, and have petrol engines of various sizes mostly between 1.1 L to 1.8 L, and even have a 2.0 L. I have no idea which engine this one have, like I said, I did not have a programme guide or any other information about who’s driving what.

Here in the photo, the car had come from the B4343, drove down this short lane, and turning into another lane which will take them back to the B4343.

About Rali Ceredigion.

Rali Ceredigion first started in 2019, and took place on closed public roads in Wales, not far from Aberystwyth.

It is sponsored by JDS Machinery, and in the sponsorship form, the full name of the event is often called JDS Machinery Rali Ceredigion.

Over the next few years, it expanded into the British Rally Championship (BRC) events for local and nation divers, and into the European Rally Championship (ERC) for nation and international drivers.

It is possible for up to around 150 cars to take part, in approximately 14 stages, over 113 miles, during the 3 days event (according to 2025 information).

Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom, Saturday 3rd June 2023.

About the photograph.

This is one of the mechanics using a portable battery pack, I assume to start the car which may have stalled the engine. Being not a car enthusiast, I’m guessing that is the purpose. The car he is working on is a DJ Firestorm with 2650cc engine, driven by Alex Summers.

The event they are attending is called the Best of British event during the weekend, at the Shelsley Walsh Speed Hill Climb track.

I shot in colour, but it was a very strong sunny day, and I mistakenly had my white balance set wrong, however I used Adobe Lightroom to convert it into black and white, and then use Adobe Photoshop to crop the shots, for a story-telling feel to the photos.

Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom, Saturday 3rd June 2023.

About the photograph.

Those two mechanics were pushing the Gould GR55, a single seater, open wheeled, race car with 2500cc engine, to the pre-start line. They stopped to wait for their turn to move forward, while other cars moved ahead as it is their turns. Notice the left mechanic’s feet in a relaxed position.

The right mechanic is seen bringing along a portable battery pack, and I am not a car enthusiast, I only know just basics, so I’m guessing the purpose of this battery pack is to start the car in case it stalled at the starting line.

The car is driven by Edmund Burgess.

The event they are attending is called the Best of British event during the weekend, at the Shelsley Walsh Speed Hill Climb track.

Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 3rd June 2023.

About the photograph.

Why did I use the title Black Waiting for this photo? Well, when preparing my photos for uploading, I make a list of what’s next to upload, and most of them tend to have a very short description, often in the form of codenames, of what the photo is about.

In this case, I see a black racing car, and the driver is waiting for his turn, hence the title Black Waiting.

This is Edmund Burgess from Lavenham, in his glossy or jet black Gould GR55 open-wheel, single-seat, formula car, bearing the number 115.

His car’s engine is a 2500cc size, and notice the Avon brand name on the tyres.

Here in the photograph, he is seen alongside another car (seen on the left of the photo), and they are waiting for the officials to beckon them forwards, each of them, one-by-one to the starting line.

The Gould GR55 is designed, developed and built by Gould Racing, a British company since 2003, for most hillclimbing motorsport drivers.

"It is clear that Eakins studied and photographed wrestlers in the gymnasium at the Quaker City Athletic Club as an exact visual reference for the painting.

"Accomplished draftsman, anatomist, and artist Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) was criticized during his career for his insistence on studying and painting from the nude. Eakins believed in a naturalistic approach to art and made no compromises with the mores of his time. He became the first artist to depict masculine (now called macho) sphere of sports and is now acclaimed as one of America’s greatest realist painters. "
