Split Rail Fence. Purvis Wetlands Sanctuary. Dryden, NY

This tree is amazing as not only is it growing out of a rock and has been split down the middle, but both halves are still alive! It's growing in a very steep-sided and densely wooded valley, so I was unable to get a better shot - HTMT!

Hi Everyone and TGIF!! Well the week is over and onto the weekend.

Took this last week at this beautiful little spot near City Island down in the Bronx in the Pelham Bay Park section of the Bronx. Hard to imagine when you hear the Bronx which is a major city in itself to find this little gem. Split Rock is a Golf club which looks like a fun course to play so may have to give this course a try and only wish I had my clubs handy and could have broken away from the event I was at. Very picturesque and well maintained and can only imagine when everything starts to bloom it must be gorgeous! Well at least i had the camera handy for a few images!! FOUR,,,,,Is what they will be hearing when i hit the Lynx, lol!!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome to my son Ty and his images he recently posted after becoming a member. Both Ty and I appreciate it so much!!

Stay well and Happy Weekend to all,

Tony

A Green Heron with a minnow it recently grabbed from below. I cannot believe how close this bird let me get. This species is known to bait its prey to get it closer.

There are only a couple places along the Split Rock Side Trail where you get a clear view. This is the more accessible of the two. (For the other view, please go back one in my photostream.)

It seems to me that the leaves were more colourful this fall than in recent years, although by the time I took this, they were already a little past their peak. There seem to be indications that the phenomenon was widespread across eastern North America. I'd love to get your observations in the comments below!

Split Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse located in Aireys Inlet, a small town on the Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia.

Originally called Eagles Nest Point, the lighthouse was constructed in 1891. For 27 years, three lighthouse keepers worked at this remote location, ensuring the light was operating well and communicating with ships via a number of code systems. The lighthouse still has its original construction with a wonderful staircase and timber fittings. The lantern still operates having had more than three different light sources over its history. The tower was converted to automatic operation in 1919, using acetylene gas to provide the illumination. It was upgraded to electric operation in 1972. The keepers' cottages and stables form an intrinsic part of the lighthouse precinct.

The original British-made Chance Brothers first order Fresnel lens is still in use. However, the factory near Birmingham, England, where the lens was built, was bombed during war-time and the essential formula for making the unique lens crystal was lost, should a replacement ever be needed. The fixed-light lantern still lights the way for thousands of vessels using a combination of lighting colors. Under standard Australian lighthouse convention, red filters would usually be placed to the extreme left and right of the beam (indicating "danger zones" for a passing ship, in-line with the jagged coastline). For reasons unknown, the Split Point Lighthouse operated for a number of years under the opposite system; although this has now been corrected. The Split Point lighthouse is 34 metres tall and stands 66 metres above sea level.

Many scenes from the children's television series Round the Twist were filmed at or around the area of the Split Point Lighthouse.

After a storm on Nov. 28, 1905 had damaged 29 ships, Congress authorized $70,000 to build a lighthouse and fog signal at Split Rock. The light station was completed in 1910.

The light was taken out of service in 1969 when modern navigation methods made it obsolete, but the beacon is lit once a year on November 10th to commemorate the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

I have made the beacon lighting ceremony the last two years, and I plan on going every year for as long as I can still make it. Yes, it's cold on the North Shore in November, but if you have a love of history, beauty, and a need for an unexplainable sense of something unexplainable, the trip is well worth it!
