Happy Sliders Sunday, ya'll

Small but pretty falls in the Grampians. It only took a fairly short but beautiful walk to get there.

The Split Rock Lighthouse peeks out of the fall foliage along the shore of Lake Superior.

The lighthouse was built after a 1905 storm that damaged 29 boats. It was first lit in 1910.

The brass framed light is made up of 252 prisms and has a range of 22 miles.

Lake Superior is the worlds largest freshwater lake holding 3,000,000,000,000,000 gallons of water! That's 3 quadrillion!!! That's enough to flood North and South America with one foot of water!!!

Split, Croatia, view of the harbor after a departing rainstorm on a spring afternoon, the low light image was taken from the balcony of my apartment, the others from sea level earlier in the afternoon. Happy weekend to everyone.

It is a long time since I drove the Great Ocean Road along Victoria's south coast. Most times in the past, it has been either dull or raining or just crazy crowded.

On this particular day, once we got through Angelsea to head east, the sun shone brightly, and we almost had the road to ourselves! It was one of those rare joyous drives on one of my very favourite roads. A day of motoring bliss for this old bus driver!

The big grand dame of Dalmatian cities, Split, in the blue hour. A panoramic version will be coming soon.

This is an old big beech tree. It is unusual to split from the base of the trunk. The soil layer is shallow, and just below is a lava layer.

Split Rock lighthouse stands on a 133 ft (41m) sheer cliff along the Minnesota North Shore of Lake Superior. It was built in 1910 after the infamous 1905 storm in which 29 ships had been lost or damaged. At the time, the area had no roads and all construction materials had to be delivered by boat and lifted up the cliff by a crane (which somehow had to get up the cliff first, I presume). Did a giant come by here and split this rock in two with his knife?

Brimham Rocks are formed from a medium to coarse sandstone known both as the Lower Brimham Grit and also as the Lower Plompton Grit, one of a series of such sandstones laid down in the later part of the Carboniferous period in what is now the Pennine region. In formal terms this particular grit which is between 10 and 30m thick, forms a part of the Hebden Formation, itself a sub-unit of the Millstone Grit Group. It was deposited 318-317 million years ago during the Kinderscoutian substage of the Bashkirian stage. The rock which has traditionally been referred to as Millstone Grit, originated as river-deposited sands in a delta environment and contains both feldspar and quartz pebbles. Deposition from moving water has resulted in the cross-bedding which is very evident in most of the outcrops. Brimham Rocks has been described as "a classic geomorphological site, significant for studies of past and present weathering processes and their contribution to landscape evolution." (Wikipedia)

An enormous boulder split in half in Joshua Tree National Park. There are several boulders in the vicinity of the Split Rock Trail that are split and many are eroded into interesting shapes. Wilbur made an effort to get close to the split, but decided the scramble over and under large boulders wasn't worth it as we planned on hiking to the Eagles Nest Cabin.

Happy Blue Monday!

Once in a while, this guy likes to mess with the split-tone-sliders.

A lovely street in Split

2012

It's fun to walk the rocky shores of Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. It's such a scenic place and never gets old. The clear water is so inviting until you step in and find it's about 40 degrees in August. Lake Superior is not really a swimming lake except for a few die hards.

Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes of North America. The lake is shared by Canada's Ontario and the United States' Minnesota to the north and west, and Wisconsin and Michigan to the south. It is generally considered the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, although some consider Lakes Huron and Michigan to be one lake, larger than Lake Superior. It is the world's third-largest freshwater lake by volume and the largest by volume in North America.

I was on top of a hill trying in vain to capture a sunset, but the lens flare was intense, so in a last minute decision, I started to wander around looking for a creative solution. I think I found one in this shot!

Traveling on up the Arrowhead of Minnesota we visit one of the most spectacular lighthouses on the Great Lakes.
