Spindle provides a hard wood and grows poisonous berries. The leave grow on stems opposite to each other and at right angles to the twig.

Tapered ends and lathe-turned body. Used for spinning to hold wound yard and often included a bone or wooden weight and hook on the end.

This spindle surprisingly spins well. Though not long like my golding, cascade, bosworth, etc. But I won't feel bad if someone steals this.
Hubby gave me roses for last Valentine with a vase. Knowing me, he knew I would use something for the vase for my hobby. He didn't think I'd use it for this. I thought this works wonderfully!
European Spindle (euonymus europaeus) - Sandy Hook National Seashore, New Jersey
Somewhat similar to American Bittersweet but with outrageous pink husks. Yet again another invasive species introduced into America for the colorful beauty of the fall ripening fruit. Children are attracted by the colorful fruit which results in numerous poisonings throughout Europe each Autumn. The shrub/tree gets its name from its extremely hard wood which was used to make spindles for spinning wool.
