Transitional Object (PsychoBarn)

Originally commissioned in 2016 by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for its roof garden, this work was first seen against New York's iconic skyline. Presented here in the Royal Academy's Annenberg Courtyard the structure is every bit as compelling and unsettling.
For Parker, the found object is key. Here she dismantled a traditional America red barn and appropriated its components: the planks of the long sidings became the house's walls and its corrugated roof provided material for the roof tiles. The design is based on the house in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho, which in turn was modelled on a painting by Edward Hopper, House by the Railroad (1925). Hopper's painting was also a reference point for Parker who was drawn to its pared-back presentation and sense of eerie isolation.
Like Hitchcock's stage set, Parker's PsychoBarn is a façade, with the supporting framework left deliberately visible. The structures also share a slightly reduced scale, and both these characteristics add to the illusionary effect. The combination of the red barn's symbolism, with all its connotations of rural idyll and wholesomeness, with the sinister psychological complexity of Hitchcock's house presents a series of deliberate paradoxes. The work's title references a term from developmental psychology - the 'transitional object' - which refers to something which brings comfort, while being a substitute for reality.

Both spindles were made by my boyfriend and all of the Fibres are displayed in other pictures around here.
I decided to make some miniature spindles, just for the heck of it. I used an antique bone crochet hook and a bead for this one. You can see how small it is compared to my Turkish spindle.
The Berwyn "Spindle" features eight classic cars on a giant spike. It is located in the Cermak Plaza shopping center, at Harlem Avenue and Cermak Road in the western suburb.

The British hedgerow plant "Spindle" (Euonymus Europaeus) takes it's name from the fact that its dense, hard wood was once used to make spindles. In the autumn it is covered in bright pink berries that split open to reveal an orange seed.
I spun and plied this 66 yards of 2-ply coopworth yarn on a drop spindle.

I first saw these Spindle fruits a couple of years ago and haven't seen any since then.....
We went on a bike ride today to Forest farm and along the Taff River. There were lots and lots of these trees here....the fruit is very pretty.
We spent a couple of hours going along the Taff Trail around the old canal and then to the Farm......we stopped and had a nice picnic, visited the bird hides, and then started the journey home.
Jack wanted to visit the bike jumps by the weir, so we stopped on the way home.....below is a photo of Jack doing one of the jumps. He had done a few jumps, then I turned to see him go head first over his handlebars, he was tangled with his bike. I managed to calm him down and another young boy came over to give a hand, which was very kind him, he lifted the bike off Jack....
Jack has a lot of bruising on his arms and legs, but especially to his hip, where we think he landed on the handle bar, his bike is fine, but his helmet has a crack about 2inches long, good job he had it on, though he does have two large marks from the straps......and a bit of a sore head.
He was very shaken, and could not ride his bike home because he was hurting......I had to phone my brother and he came and put our bikes in his car and drove us home. Luckily he doesn't live very far away.
What an end to a wonderful day.
