Decorated stone spindle whorl, possibly dating to the Neolithic or bronze age periods. Spindle whorls were used with a wooden spindle to spin wool or linen into yarn. The top and bottom of this whorl are marked with lines in an almost cross formation from the centre hole and the edges are decorated with a rune like pattern. It was found at Oakbank, near East Calder, West Lothian.

SPINDLE (Euonymus europaeus)
Spindle spin and Spindle grow;
Mirth and magic overflow.
Ruddy seed and fine-toothed leaf,
Spindle, dispel gloom and grief.
Her father died when she was seventeen,
And wicked was the man who wed her mother,
And all her hopes and dreams he sought to smother,
Forbidding her to walk amid the green.
The old man cursed and locked her in his keep -
He hoped to drive her slowly to despair -
The floor was earthen, clammy was the air;
She sat alone, and watched the spiders creep.
And nought she had, to pass her empty time,
But a spindle, fashioned by her father.
No wool, but only cobwebs could she gather,
The windows dim, and caked with moss and grime.
She thrust her spindle fast into the ground,
And whispered, “All is not as it appears.”
She watered it forlornly with her tears;
But for her sobbing, made no other sound.
And buds grew on the spindle in the morning;
A pair of smooth, green leaves were sprouting soon.
Her delighted eyes beheld, by afternoon,
A little Spindle tree, with leaves adorning.
And overnight grew flowers greenish-white,
And after, clustered fruit as red as roses.
And behold, what morningtide discloses:
Beneath the tree, she’s dancing with delight.
The old man came to gloat and make demand,
And thought he’d find her grieving on the ground;
Bemused by her sweet laughter, nought he found,
But spiders’ webs, and a spindle in her hand.
Spindle spin and Spindle grow;

I spun up 1 oz of the lovely Polwarth last night; the finished yarn will be 2-ply and around a fingering weight.
This is my first experience spinning Polwarth, and oh my - I'm a fan. It's really lovely to spin, and Kristine's colors are fabulous as always.
Every time I get my spindle out, Charlie has to come over and lie down near me. It never fails! Pretty funny. He likes to watch me spin - sometimes until he just nods off. Oh, this dog.

Russian style spindles were first used in the Russian region of Orenburg to create incredibly fine gossamer shawls famous for their fine quality and delicate patterns (see last photo).
Being of Russian background myself, I love the Russian traditional painting style called 'Khokhloma'. The floral design on this spindle was inspired by Khokhloma folk painting. This remarkable Russian decorative craft dates back to the 17th century and gets its name from the Volga trade settlement village of Khokhloma.
Khokhloma is an original Russian folk art, a unique expression of national culture, and this contributes to its growing popularity. Khokhloma gets its bright, happy character from a distinctive matching of scarlet, black and gold.
I painted theis spindle and bowl using top quality acrylic paints over a maple base that was hand-turned here on Etsy by Joshua Lynch of TexasJeans. This spindle has been tested and balanced for the best spinning performance. I have coated it with several coats of gloss varnish for that extra shine and durability.
