Sphinx in suburbia.

The caterpillar of the Sphinx ligustri, known as the Privet Hawk Moth, is a species of moth found in most of the Palearctic ecozone.

It has a 12 centimetres (4.7 in) wingspan, and is found in urban areas, forests and woodlands.

The male Privet Hawk-moth can make a hissing sound, if disturbed, by rubbing together a set of scales and spines at the end of its abdomen.

That last stretch was like climbing a wall, my legs just refused to follow my command and every step was gruelling. On the way down my legs would just start shaking and twitching! On a good note, I didn’t hear a peep from my knee! Was it worth it? Yup!

This turret is atop the Four Seasons restaurant in Renshaw Street, Liverpool, and is encircled by several figurines who look very much like classical-period winged sphinxes.

I call this one "The Sphinx". He was ready to pounce but I snuck up and got a profile shot before he saw me.

The summer rains have spurred plant growth. Here two sphinx (or

hummingbird) moths draw nourishment from the flowers of Texas Ranger

sage bushes. My camera is not fast enough to stop those wings.

The great sphinx at Giza which depicts the head of Pharoah Khafra on the body of a lion. Believed to have been built circa 2500 BC.

Here the Sphinx is shown next to the pyramid by the same builder, Khafra.

The High Court of the City of Hamburg is remarkable for its huge dome and its equally huge hall, the other rooms being insignificant. It was built in 1907/12 and shows no figurative ornament except one Justitia and two sphinxes. What do these sphinxes mean in the context of law? Do they refer to Investigation and Punishment? I'd rather think they stand here for the archaic origin of law.

A sphinx statue (1625 - 1630) at the Hôtel de Sully mansion.

L'hôtel de Sully is an hôtel particulier of the Louis XIII style(French Renaissance). It was built between 1625 and 1630. The opulent sculptural decoration is unusual for Parisian buildings of the early Classical period.

The 17th century marked a golden age for French art in all fields. In the early part of the 17th century, late mannerist and early Baroque tendencies continued to flourish in the court of Marie de Medici and Louis XIII.

Hyles lineata, White-lined Sphinx Moth also known as a Hummingbird Moth. This was on my hanging basket of petunias outside of my business.

In the U.S., the largest insect is the giant waterbug. In Puerto rico, it does not even come close. Among other things, we have several species of moth that are very large. This particular moth likes to lay its eggs on my Plumeria trees. These eggs hatch into caterpillars that become very large and decimate all of their leaves.
