The Sphinx was carved out of bedrock sometime around 2500 BCE (but restoration uses blocks). It was built as the guard to Khafre's pyramid but later took on the role of a god and was worshipped (as noted by Pliny the Elder in his manuscript Natural History 77-79 CE). It is believed the face is that of Khafre.
Contrary to popular belief, the face was not targeted by Napoleon's artillery. It is believed the nose was removed by an extremist who believed removing the nose was how you defeated the pagan god.

About a month ago I saw a white-lined sphinx moth in my yard. Today I found this sphinx moth caterpillar eating the leaves of evening primrose in the same spot. I put a quarter next to it to show the size.
The Great Sphinx of Giza (or, commonly, the Sphinx) is a statue of a reclining or couchant sphinx (a mythical creature with a lion's body and a human head) that stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. It is the largest monolith statue in the world, standing 73.5 metres (241 ft) long, 6 metres (20 ft) wide, and 20.22 m (66.34 ft) high. It is the oldest known monumental sculpture, and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom in the reign of the pharaoh Khafra (c. 2558–2532 BC).

Kogaionon was the semi-mythical holy mountain of the Dacians, the place where Zalmoxis stayed in an underground cave for three years. Strabo claims that a river with the same name flowed in the vicinity.
One modern translation of Kogaionon is "sacred mountain", which would be connected to a probable Dacian word kaga meaning "sacred", attested in two early 2nd century inscriptions from Tomis.
Kogaionon's (test) localization is still under debate, but thought to be either in the area around the Dacian capital Sarmizegetusa (there is a 2291m summit there called Gugu and there are speculations that it could be the holy mountain; it may also have been Dealul Grădiştei where the ruins of the sanctuaries of Sarmizegetusa are located) or even the Ceahlău mountain.

This fellow just walked in one day and refused to leave. Not that anyone wanted him to leave.

It looks like the Sphinx is carrying the pyramid on its back. ...Uhh, it's not, OK? No Sphinxes were harmed in the taking of these photographs.
